While psychotherapists are trained to improve their clients’ quality of life, little work has examined the quality of life experienced by psychotherapist trainees themselves. Yet their life satisfactions and stresses would plausibly affect both their ability to learn new skills and conduct psychotherapy. Therefore, in the Society for Psychotherapy Research Interest Section on Psychotherapist Development and Training study, we investigated the patterns of self-reported life quality and their correlates in a multinational sample of 1,214 psychotherapist trainees. A comprehensive questionnaire was (...) used at the outset of trainings to assess trainees’ professional background, current life situation, personal characteristics, family background, and social and national origin. The findings indicated 54.3% of trainees’ lives could be characterized as fortunate or happy, whereas 14.3% could be characterized as clearly distressed or troubled. The strongest correlates of high life stress, a contributor to poor life quality, were economic insecurity, self-protectiveness, and attachment-related anxiety in relationships, and economic or psychological hardship in childhood. In turn, greater wellbeing was most strongly associated with a warm and open interpersonal style, being married, having sufficient economic means, and material and emotional security in childhood. While the results indicate the majority of therapists experience a relatively good quality of life, the findings also suggest potential targets for increasing trainees’ life quality when it may be deficient, such as those on a societal level, training program level, and individual level, in order to promote effective learning and therapy practice. In recent years, neuroscience has been a particularly prolific discipline stimulating many innovative treatment approaches in medicine. However, when it comes to the brain, new techniques of intervention do not always meet with a positive public response, in spite of promising therapeutic benefits. The reason for this caution clearly is the brain’s special importance as “organ of the mind”. As such it is widely held to be the origin of mankind’s unique position among living beings. Likewise, on the level of (...) the individual human being, the brain is considered the material substrate of those traits that in combination render each person unique. In view of this preeminent significance of the brain, it is understandable that, in general, interventions into the brain are considered a delicate issue and that new techniques of intervention are scrutinised with particular care. However, in doing so it is important not to go to the opposite extreme and shy away from promising new therapeutic approaches for debilitating disorders of the brain. With respect to the new techniques of brain intervention a broad interdisciplinary perspective is required to discern irrational fear from justified concern. Hence, the Europäische Akademie established a project group consisting, on the one hand, of experts from different fields of medicine who have got first-hand experience of applying the techniques at issue and, on the other hand, of philosophers and a legal expert. The task of this team was to review the state of the art with respect to each single technique of intervening in the brain, to indicate future developments, and to address the ethical and legal issues common to all of them. Scientific theories are used for a variety of purposes. For example, physical theories such as classical mechanics and electrodynamics have important applications in engineering and technology, and we trust that this results in useful machines, stable bridges, and the like. Similarly, theories such as quantum mechanics and relativity theory have many applications as well. Beyond that, these theories provide us with an understanding of the world and address fundamental questions about space, time, and matter. This article considers what happened to American anthropology, which was initiated by the scientist Franz Boas, who commanded all fields of anthropology,physical, biological, and cultural. Boas was a brave field worker who explored Eskimo land, and inspired two famous students, Ruth Benedict and Margaret Mead, to cross borders in new kinds of studies. After this florescence, there was a general return to linear descriptive positivism, superficial comparisons of quantitative cultural traits, and false evolutionary schemes, which did not introduce us to (...) the personalities and inner worlds of the tribal peoples studied. The 1953 study by the philosopher David Bidney was a revelation. Bidney enunciated and clarified all my doubts about the paths of anthropology and his work became to some extent a model for a narration of the story of American anthropology. In many ways he envisaged a semiotics of culture formulated by Lotman. I try to illustrate the fallacies listed by Bidney and how they have been partially overcome in some later anthropological studies which have focused on symbolism, artistry, and subjective qualities of the people studied. I then try to give an overview of the school started by Lotman that spans all human behavior, that demonstrates the complexity of meaning and communication, in vast areas of knowledge, from art, literature, science, and philosophy, that abjured strict relativism and closed systems and has become an inspiration for those who want anthropology to encompass the self and the other, and Bahtin’s double meaning. This paper was inspired by Bidney as a call to explore widely all possible worlds, not to abandon science and reality but to explore deeper inner interrelations and how the aesthetic may be indeed be paramount in the complexities of communication. In the field of socio-legal studies or law and society scholarship, it is rare to find empirically rich and conceptually sophisticated understandings of actual legal practice. This book, in contrast, connects the conceptual and the empirical, the abstract and the concrete, and in doing so shows the law to be an irreducibly social, material and temporal practice. Der methodische Kulturalismus bestimmt sich selbst durch eine Abkehr vom erkenntnistheoretischen Naturalismus, Realismus und Kulturrelativismus. Er sieht im Handlungserfolg ein diskursunabhängiges Kriterium für die Einlösung von Geltungsansprüchen in theoretischen Redekontexten. Der Aufsatz legt die kulturalistische Perspektive in Bezug auf die Praktische Philosophie dar. Hierbei wird aber verneint, dass es im Bereich der Praktischen Philosophie ein diskursunabhängiges Kriterium für das Einlösen von praktischen Geltungsansprüchen geben kann. Die Ergebnisse erheben damit keinen universellen Geltungsanspruch (und insoweit wird dem Kulturrelativismus Recht gegeben), aber sie (...) erheben in Bezug auf posttraditionale Gesellschaften einen partikularen. In diesen Gesellschaften hat sich (historisch kontingent) etabliert, dass Normen gegenüber den Mitgliedern der Gemeinschaft nicht durch den Verweis auf die Tradition oder eine Autorität begründet werden sollen. Wie sich eine normative Ethik unter dieser Prämisse begründen lässt, wird im ersten Teil des Artikels expliziert. Sie wird dort als eine Beratungsethik konzipiert, die das Ideal der gewaltfreien Konfliktbewältigung verwirklichen soll (welches aber als solches nicht universell gerechtfertigt werden kann). Obgleich die These vertreten wird, dass die eudaimonistische Ethik keine Grundlegung für die normative Ethik sein kann, wird zugestanden, dass sich für die praktische Philosophie noch weitere Fragen ergeben, wenn die normative Ethik abgeschlossen ist. Diese beziehen sich auf das Gute und geglückte Leben und lassen sich im Rahmen einer eudaimonistischen Ethik bearbeiten. Partindo da leitura mitológica do fenômeno «tempo» no mito de Kronos-Saturno, contrasta-se a experiência que ela expõe com a vivência de plenitude, alheia ao tempo, ligada ao momento da relação fusional do bebê com a mãe. A integração do Pai no marco (...) configurado pelo vínculo materno-filial deverá contribuir para a abertura ao mundo, culminando no que Heidegger chamou Geviert, e, nessa medida, sustentar o processo de amadurecimento do infante até ao pleno desenvolvimento da vida pessoal. O desequilíbrio que provoca o não cumprimento dessa função, traduz-se em vivências patológicas do tempo. (shrink)

A consistent finding in research on conditional reasoning is that individuals are more likely to endorse the valid modus ponens (MP) inference than the equally valid modus tollens (MT) inference. This pattern holds for both abstract task and probabilistic task. The existing explanation for this phenomenon within a Bayesian framework (e.g., Oaksford & Chater, 2008) accounts for this asymmetry by assuming separate probability distributions for both MP and MT. We propose a novel explanation within a computational-level Bayesian account of reasoning (...) according to which “argumentation is learning”. We show that the asymmetry must appear for certain prior probability distributions, under the assumption that the conditional inference provides the agent with new information that is integrated into the existing knowledge by minimizing the Kullback-Leibler divergence between the posterior and prior probability distribution. We also show under which conditions we would expect the opposite pattern, an MT-MP asymmetry. (shrink)

Algorithmic systems are increasingly used by state agencies to inform decisions about humans. They produce scores on risks of recidivism in criminal justice, indicate the probability for a job seeker to find a job in the labor market, or calculate whether an applicant should get access to a certain university program. In this contribution, we take an interdisciplinary perspective, provide a bird’s eye view of the different key decisions that are to be taken when state actors decide to use an (...) algorithmic system, and illustrate these decisions with empirical examples from case studies. Building on these insights, we discuss the main pitfalls and promises of the use of algorithmic system by the state and focus on four levels: The most basic question whether an algorithmic system should be used at all, the regulation and governance of the system, issues of algorithm design, and, finally, questions related to the implementation of the system on the ground and the human–machine-interaction that comes with it. Based on our assessment of the advantages and challenges that arise at each of these levels, we propose a set of crucial questions to be asked when such intricate matters are addressed. (shrink)

In dem Aufsatz wird eine kulturalistische Relevanzlogik im Rahmen des Methodischen Kulturalismus zu entwickeln versucht. Hierfür werden sowohl die Probleme, die in den Logikbegründungsversuchen des Methodischen Konstruktivismus auftraten, besprochen, als auch Probleme der Klassischen und der Intuitionistischen Logik sowie der Minimal- und Relevanzlogik als solcher. Neben der Kulturalistischen Relevanzlogik im engeren Sinne werden durch zusätzliche Anforderungen an die Prämissenmengen weitere Logiken begründet – beschränkt man sich auf konsistente Prämissenmengen, erhält man die kulturalistische Variante der Intuitionistischen Relevanzlogik, beschränkt man sich auf (...) entscheidbare Diskursbereiche, erhält man eine Klassische Relevanzlogik und bei Beschränkung auf konsistente und entscheidbare Diskursbereiche eine Starke Klassische Relevanzlogik. Die in dem Beitrag versuchte Logikbegründung ist vom Autor inzwischen widerrufen und durch den in "On Inferring" dargestellten Ansatz ersetzt worden. (shrink)
