Social impairment is a defining phenotypic feature of autism. The present study investigated whether individuals with autistic traits exhibit altered perceptions of social emotions. Two groups of participants were recruited based on their scores on the autism-spectrum quotient. Their behavioral responses and event-related potentials elicited by social and non-social stimuli with positive, negative, and neutral emotional valence were compared in two experiments. In Experiment 1, participants were instructed to view social-emotional and non-social emotional pictures. In Experiment 2, participants were instructed (...) to listen to social-emotional and non-social emotional audio recordings. More negative emotional reactions and smaller amplitudes of late ERP components were found in the High-AQ group than in the Low-AQ group in response to the social-negative stimuli. In addition, amplitudes of these late ERP components in both experiments elicited in response to social-negative stimuli were correlated with the AQ scores of the High-AQ group. These results suggest that individuals with autistic traits have altered emotional processing of social-negative emotions. (shrink)

[The statement] A ^ Ā is doubtlessly a logical contradiction in terms of formal logic. However, according to dialectics this is a state which the contradiction in the essence of a thing experiences in the process of development — a state of qualitative change of being "at once this and that." A contradiction under such circumstances is an important object of dialectical studies. And such a state of affairs actually exists in real life; a thing tends to experience such a (...) state when it changes into its opposite. The contradictory aspects experiencing such a state both conform to reality. Therefore A ^ Ā is a logical contradiction and a dialectical contradiction as well. The two types of contradictions are actually the two manifestations of the same contradiction in different contexts. Or, in other words, they are the different points of view and approaches of two kinds of logic toward the same contradiction. Obviously, in distinguishing problems we must first make clear the two different kinds of logic, or, the two different methods in approaching contradictions, rather than distinguishing between two types of contradictions. In accordance with the compositionality criterion and hierarchy principle of Rhetorical Structure Theory, this study reframes each tree in the RST Discourse Treebank into three new dependency trees with ultimate nodes being clauses, sentences, and paragraphs, respectively, which also draw on an analogy between syntactic and discourse trees. Detailed percentages of various RST relations at the three granularity levels are examined, illuminating the discourse processes of organizing units of one granularity level into those of the next upper level and suggesting (...) certain homogeneity and interaction across levels in the Treebank, particularly at the two upper levels. The study demonstrates the applicability of RST analysis between same-level terminal units. With unique analytical advantages, the newly constructed discourse dependency trees provide new research prospects. (shrink)

Women entrepreneurs innovate, initiate, engage, and run business enterprises to contribute the domestic development. Women entrepreneurs think and start taking risks of operating enterprises and combine various factors involved in production to deal with the uncertain business environment. Entrepreneurship and technological innovation play a crucial role in developing the economy by creating job opportunities, improving skills, and executing new ideas. It has a significant impact on the income of the household. The study focused on investigating the role of women’s entrepreneurship (...) and innovation technologies in contributing to household income in the challenging situation of the pandemic COVID-19. The paper emphasized identifying the determinants of female entrepreneurial contribution toward household income. This study collected data from selected rural and urban areas of district Faisalabad through a self-administered questionnaire. Investigators interviewed female entrepreneurs and chose them through the snowball sampling technique from a population of purposively selected female-run businesses. Interviews were conducted with women entrepreneurs to gather relevant information for the survey investigation at their workplaces and home. The effects of various factors, including age, education, family size, income from other sources, time allocated to entrepreneurial activity, firm size, and location (rural/urban) were estimated empirically using an ordered logit model. The study findings exhibited a positive and significant role of respondents’ education, family size, time allocated to entrepreneurial activities, and firm size. The survey outcomes also indicated that the contribution of entrepreneurial income to household income in the rural areas is significantly higher than that in urban areas. This study signifies that regulations against gender discrimination in public and private institutions are helpful. Besides, encouraging an environment for entrepreneurial culture among women in the country would increase family income. The study’s findings and policy implications directly link to Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) 5 of Gender Equality (GE) and SDG 8 related to decent work and economic growth. (shrink)

This study investigates how board size and occupational background of directors differentially influence social performance in for-profit and non-profit organizations. Using data from California hospitals, we develop a quantitative measure of social performance and provide the following empirical evidence. First, board size is negatively (positively) associated with social performance in for-profit (non-profit) hospitals. Second, the presence of government officials on the board is negatively (positively) related to social performance in for-profit (non-profit) hospitals. Third, representation of physicians on the board is (...) positively associated with social performance in for-profit hospitals, whereas their presence is not significantly related to social performance in non-profit hospitals. Our findings highlight the different effects of governance mechanisms on social performance in for-profit and non-profit organizations. (shrink)

Based on signaling theory, we explore the impact of corporate fraud on firms’ innovation performance. First, we propose that corporate fraud harms firms’ innovation performance. This is because, as a negative signal, fraud makes it difficult for firms to obtain the policy, funding, and human resources needed for outstanding innovation performance. We further argue that the institutional aspects of the signaling environment (e.g., industrial competition, regional institutional development, and social trust) will influence core stakeholders’ reception and interpretation of fraud signals. (...) These factors, in turn, moderate the signaling effect of corporate fraud on firms’ innovation performance. A travers de nombreux artifices, dont les machines sont les plus élaborés, nous construisons notre monde, enchevêtrant raison et imaginaire et mêlant utile et gratuit. La machine et ses rêves nous renvoient alors une image éclairée de nous-mêmes. Ce jeu de miroir Ne pose-t-il pas la (...) question de savoir si, au bout de toute philosophique interrogation, nous ne serions pas plutôt des machines rêvant de devenir des humains. Ainsi, cette question ouvre une enquête sur l’imaginaire attaché aux machines, des premiers automates à l’ombre du cyborg, La définition rigoureuse de la machine, tentée en début d’ouvrage, se trouve, au fil des pages, débordée sur les frontières ténues entre raison technicienne et imaginaire. Ces rêveries de la machine ont finalement été prises au sérieux par les artistes, depuis Duchamp et Léger, jusqu’aux formes contemporaine de l’art numérique, en passant par Tinguely et Schöffer. S’intéresser aux rêves des machines, c’est prendre conscience qu’avec elles s’insinuent des parts d’ombre et de lumière. Car le songe ne va jamais sans risque. Humains nous sommes des êtres du désir, mais nous sommes aussi des êtres de l’artifice. C’est sur ce terrain-là que cet ouvrage entraîne notre réflexion, au-delà de l’opposition trop simple entre technologie naïve et technologie paralysante. (shrink)

En associant philosophie et logique, cet ouvrage apporte un éclairage sur l'évolution de la logique de l'époque d'Aristote à nos jours. Il présente les différents formalismes des logiques non-standard en expliquant tout d'abord les besoins de ces logiques puis leurs descriptions syntaxiques et sémantiques. A l'aide d'exercices, il offre un panorama de ces logiques qui sont complexes à " utiliser " pour modéliser des connaissances permettant ainsi aux lecteurs d'appréhender ce domaine.

Cet ouvrage rend compte de l'émergence d'une esthétique "expérimentale" à partir du XIXe siècle, présente ses précurseurs et ses suites, notamment sa critique dans la première moitié du XXe siècle, puis sa mise à l'écart par le postmodernisme et l'art relationnel, et enfin ses résurgences dans les arts numériques. Des fragments de textes connus ou plus confidentiels y sont commentés en suivant l'idée d'un morcellement qui laisserait toutefois subsister l'espoir d'un progrès des connaissances sur l'art : ce qui lui redonnerait (...) une légitimité et fournirait des critères d'évaluation partageables, aspiration nourrie par le développement de l'intelligence artificielle au sein d'une industrialisation croissante des pratiques artistiques et culturelles. La Critique de la raison impure rapproche deux auteurs, deux oeuvres, a priori inconciliables : Le Banquet de Platon et Pour en finir avec le jugement de dieu d'Antonin Artaud. On ne peut bien sûr pas savoir si Platon a vraiment douté de ses propres thèses, mais il a probablement eu conscience de l'impasse de la métaphysique, du peu de consistance de la connaissance contemplative au regard de l'évidence des "faits construits" de la connaissance opératoire qui, au lieu de constituer (...) le réel comme sujet absolu, l'appréhende comme objet. Pour sa part, Antonin Artaud ne semble pas avoir douté des siennes, ne saisissant jamais le réel qu'en le reconstruisant, qu'en le recomposant, par la manipulation de quelques prélèvements soigneusement choisis. C'est sur cette base qu'il était possible de réunir Platon et Antonin Artaud, et aussi avec la thématique du scandale : s'il est camouflé, dans Le Banquet, par l'aspect anecdotique et quelque peu bouffon de l'intervention d'Alcibiade, avec ce subterfuge Platon n'affichait pas moins de défiance envers "dieu" qu'Antonin Artaud dans son émission radiophonique interdite d'antenne en 1948."--Page 4 of cover. Considéré en France comme un pédagogue "laxiste" voire "gauchiste", Dewey est présenté par certains philosophes nord-américains, Richard Rorty en particulier, comme un postmoderniste. C'est oublier que Dewey mit ses théories philosophiques à l'épreuve de l'école. Sa pédagogie reste aujourd'hui la théorie de l'éducation la plus actuelle.

En notre temps dit de postmodernité, le confinement de toute transcendance dans l'horizontalité d'une religiosité ambiante produit une confusion générale quant au sens même de la laïcité éducative, sommée de se définir, enfin, comme postchrétienne. En un temps où la formation des maîtres se trouve privée d'espace de formation, ce livre indique des parcours et des lieux d'analyse susceptibles de conforter, aussi bien les pédagogues et les éducateurs que le citoyen, dans l'idée que certains détours de lecture et de pensée (...) donnent de l'air, de l'espace, des appuis pour préserver et repenser, en retour, les tensions constitutives de l'exigence laïque. En un temps, aussi, où les replis communautaristes assaillent de plus en plus l'école, ce livre voudrait inciter quiconque se dit laïque à des détours réfléchis par la posture de l'autre. Ainsi il deviendra possible, dans l'enceinte scolaire élargie, de mieux faire la part entre ce qui, des convictions de tout un chacun peut être utilement soumis à une critique étayée, informée et ce qui, repéré, accueilli, doit être renvoyé à l'ultime espérance de chacun, hors champ de toute emprise. De la vie de cette grande figure juive que fut Moïse Maïmonide (1138-1204), on connaît peu de choses. Mais on sait que son siècle fut marqué par les persécutions et l'exil de son peuple, entraînant l'oubli de la tradition et plongeant ainsi les siens, particulièrement les savants, dans ce que le penseur diagnostiqua comme une douloureuse perplexité. Comment retrouver une sagesse perdue quand on en a un besoin vital? Comment concilier la Torah avec le savoir philosophique d'alors? Telles furent les (...) questions de Maïmonide, traitées dans le Mishné Torah et le célèbre Guide des perplexes (ou des égarés), autour desquels s'organise ce passionnant essai qui enracine la pensée du philosophe et médecin dans ce dont elle est née et à quoi il chercha une voie de guérison. Maïmonide entreprit de pacifier le rapport au savoir plutôt que d'apporter une réponse à des problèmes métaphysiques. C'est en cela qu'il résonne encore aujourd'hui. (shrink)

Aujourd'hui la notion de nature est omniprésente : le mot se trouve au coeur des réflexions écologiques mais sert aussi d'argument publicitaire pour les produits les plus divers de l'industrie agroalimentaire à la cosmétique. Cependant, les usages actuels et multiformes de cette notion se trouvaient déjà dans les débats du siècle des Lumières. Alors que les fondements religieux de la société s'effritaient sous l'effet de la division du christianisme et de la révolution scientifique, la Nature cessait d'être l'oeuvre divine offerte (...) à la contemplation pour devenir l'objet de la science. Elle devint aussi le pivot d'un basculement culturel, social et politique lorsqu'on opposa à la religion révélée la religion naturelle, au droit divin le droit naturel. Si la dialectique entre la raison et la nature ouverte au XVIIIe siècle se poursuit, un retour sur ce thème des Lumières à nos jours éclaire l'actualité de ce début du XXIe siècle. Les articles réunis dans cet ouvrage s'intéressent successivement à l'idée de nature dans les sciences, les techniques, les arts, le droit et la politique ainsi qu'à l'héritage actuel de ces débats. Using Hofstede's culture theory (1980, 2001 Culture's Consequences: Comparing Values, Behaviours, Institutions, and Organizations Across Nation. Sage, NewYork), the current study incorporates the moral development (e.g. Thorne, 2000; Thorne and Magnan, 2000; Thorne et al., 2003) and multidimensional ethics scale (e.g. Cohen et al., 1993; Cohen et al., 1996b; Cohen et al., 2001; Flory et al., 1992) approaches to compare the ethical reasoning and decisions of Canadian and Mainland Chinese final year undergraduate accounting students. The results indicate that Canadian accounting (...) students' formulation of an intention to act on a particular ethical dilemma (deliberative reasoning) as measured by the moral development approach (Thorne, 2000) was higher than Mainland Chinese accounting students. The current study proposes that the five factors identified by the multidimensional ethics scale (MES), as being relevant to ethical decision making can be placed into the three levels of ethical reasoning identified by Kohlberg's (1958, The Development of Modes of Moral Thinking and Choice in the Years Ten to Sixteen. University of Chicago, Doctoral dissertation) theory of cognitive moral development. Canadian accounting students used post-conventional MES factors (moral equity, contractualism, and utilitarianism) more frequently and made more ethical audit decisions than Chinese accounting students. To survive in a competitive environment, small and medium enterprises have had to adapt to the digital environment in order to adjust to customer needs globally, particularly in the post-COVID-19 world. The advantages of cloud computing provide opportunities for SMEs with a restricted budget and limited resources. To understand how SMEs adopt cloud computing in a complex digital environment, this study examines how antecedents combine with each other to explain the high adoption of cloud computing. From the perspectives of holism (...) and set theory, we draw on complexity and configuration theories, present a conceptual model including seven antecedents based on the technology-organization-environment framework, and conduct an asymmetric fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis. Through an empirical study with 123 Chinese companies, we identify nine combinations of determinant antecedents that lead to the high adoption of cloud computing. The results show that none of the factors are indispensable to explain a high adoption on their own; instead, they are insufficient but necessary parts of the causal combinations that explain a high adoption. This study contributes to the literature on cloud computing adoption by extending current knowledge on how antecedents combine to increase the adoption and identify specific patterns of SMEs for whom these factors are essential and greatly influence their adoption.
