Women entrepreneurs innovate, initiate, engage, and run business enterprises to contribute the domestic development. Women entrepreneurs think and start taking risks of operating enterprises and combine various factors involved in production to deal with the uncertain business environment. Entrepreneurship and technological innovation play a crucial role in developing the economy by creating job opportunities, improving skills, and executing new ideas. It has a significant impact on the income of the household. The study focused on investigating the role of women’s entrepreneurship (...) and innovation technologies in contributing to household income in the challenging situation of the pandemic COVID-19. The paper emphasized identifying the determinants of female entrepreneurial contribution toward household income. This study collected data from selected rural and urban areas of district Faisalabad through a self-administered questionnaire. Investigators interviewed female entrepreneurs and chose them through the snowball sampling technique from a population of purposively selected female-run businesses. Interviews were conducted with women entrepreneurs to gather relevant information for the survey investigation at their workplaces and home. The effects of various factors, including age, education, family size, income from other sources, time allocated to entrepreneurial activity, firm size, and location (rural/urban) were estimated empirically using an ordered logit model. The study findings exhibited a positive and significant role of respondents’ education, family size, time allocated to entrepreneurial activities, and firm size. The survey outcomes also indicated that the contribution of entrepreneurial income to household income in the rural areas is significantly higher than that in urban areas. This study signifies that regulations against gender discrimination in public and private institutions are helpful. Besides, encouraging an environment for entrepreneurial culture among women in the country would increase family income. The study’s findings and policy implications directly link to Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) 5 of Gender Equality (GE) and SDG 8 related to decent work and economic growth. (shrink)

To survive in a competitive environment, small and medium enterprises have had to adapt to the digital environment in order to adjust to customer needs globally, particularly in the post-COVID-19 world. The advantages of cloud computing provide opportunities for SMEs with a restricted budget and limited resources. To understand how SMEs adopt cloud computing in a complex digital environment, this study examines how antecedents combine with each other to explain the high adoption of cloud computing. From the perspectives of holism (...) and set theory, we draw on complexity and configuration theories, present a conceptual model including seven antecedents based on the technology-organization-environment framework, and conduct an asymmetric fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis. Through an empirical study with 123 Chinese companies, we identify nine combinations of determinant antecedents that lead to the high adoption of cloud computing. The results show that none of the factors are indispensable to explain a high adoption on their own; instead, they are insufficient but necessary parts of the causal combinations that explain a high adoption. This study contributes to the literature on cloud computing adoption by extending current knowledge on how antecedents combine to increase the adoption and identify specific patterns of SMEs for whom these factors are essential and greatly influence their adoption. Focusing on Weibo and Twitter, this study adopts computer-mediated discourse analysis to examine how influencers use emoji sequences when engaging in self-presentation. It identified a variety of text-based speech acts, emoji functions, and functional relations by conducting speech act and pragmatic function analysis. ‘Claim’ is the most common text-based speech act accompanying with emoji sequences in both data groups; however, the former had a higher percentage than the later. Moreover, emoji functioning as a combination of ‘stance and action’ in sequences (...) comprise the most prominent category in the Twitter data, whereas the ‘concept’ function accounts for the largest percentage within the Weibo data. Finally, emoji sequences serving as ‘emphasis on text’ is most employed in connection with accompanying texts in both data. This study also observed how a lack of user-desired emoji may be compensated for through collocation of emoji sequences, a device which involves significant creativity and intricacy. (shrink)

This work is the intellectual biography of the greatest of American philosophers. Peirce was not only a pioneer in logic and the creator of a philosophical movement pragmatism he also proposed a phenomenological theory, quite different from that of Husserl, but equal in profundity; and long before Saussure, and in a totally different spirit, a semiotic theory whose present interest owes nothing to passing fashion and everything to its fecundity. Throughout his life Peirce wrote continually about sign and phenomenon (or (...) phaneron). Consequently his writings must be studied chronologically if they are not to appear incomprehensible or contradictory. One of the merits of this book is to clarify Peirce's thought by analysing its development chronologically. We follow the evolution of Peirce's thought from his critique of Kantian logic and Cartesianism (Chap. I, “Leaving the Cave”: 1851-1870) to his discovery of modern logic and pragmatism (Chap. II, “The Eclipse of the Sun”: 1870-1887) and finally to a semiotic founded on a phenomenology the base of which is the logic of relations and the crowning-point scientific metaphysics (Chap. This study investigates how board size and occupational background of directors differentially influence social performance in for-profit and non-profit organizations. Using data from California hospitals, we develop a quantitative measure of social performance and provide the following empirical evidence. First, board size is negatively (positively) associated with social performance in for-profit (non-profit) hospitals. Second, the presence of government officials on the board is negatively (positively) related to social performance in for-profit (non-profit) hospitals. Third, representation of physicians on the board is (...) positively associated with social performance in for-profit hospitals, whereas their presence is not significantly related to social performance in non-profit hospitals. Our findings highlight the different effects of governance mechanisms on social performance in for-profit and non-profit organizations. (shrink)

ABSTRACTFilm clips are widely used in emotion research due to their relatively high ecological validity. Although researchers have established various film clip sets for different cultures, the few that exist related to Chinese culture do not adequately address positive emotions. The main purposes of the present study were to establish a standardised database of Chinese emotional film clips that could elicit more categories of reported positive emotions compared to the existing databases and to expand the available film clips that can (...) be used as neutral materials. Two experiments were conducted to construct the database. In experiment 1, 111 film clips were selected from more than one thousand Chinese movies for preliminary screening. After 315 participants viewed and evaluated these film clips, 39 excerpts were selected for further validation. Balanced time perspective is associated with optimal social functioning and facilitates adaptation to pressure and changes in the environment. Previous studies have found that mindfulness is positively associated with and might promote balanced time perspective. However, the mechanism through which mindfulness affects balanced time perspective remains unexplored. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the mediating role of self-compassion and subjective well-being in the relationship between mindfulness and balanced time perspective. A total of 754 Chinese college students, aged (...) 17–27 years, completed the Chinese versions of the Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, Self-Compassion Scale, Subjective Well-Being Scale, and Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory. There were significant positive correlations between mindfulness, self-compassion, subjective well-being, and balanced time perspective. Structural equation modeling indicated that in addition to the direct influence of mindfulness on balanced time perspective, self-compassion and subjective well-being played a partial mediating role. On the basis of these findings, we conclude that mindfulness has an important positive influence on balanced time perspective, and highlight the crucial role of the self-compassion in cultivating an individual's balanced time perspective. Parcourir, comme le fait ce livre, le devenir de la parole de raison (logos) dans son rapport avec le conflit dans les choses, c'est à la fois comprendre le statut de ce genre particulier de pensée qu'est le logos philosophique et le caractère propre de la pensée des Européens. Grèce d'Asie, le logos philosophique s'est finalement rétabli en Europe occidentale, après une longue éclipse médiévale, à la faveur d'une vaste migration à laquelle, d'Orient en Occident, ont pris part juifs, chrétiens et musulmans. Il en est ainsi parce que le logos des origines — logos philosophique d'Héraclite à Marc Aurèle — a fait l'objet d'un détournement théologique : le logos-raison est devenu, au tournant des Ie et IIe siècles de notre ère, le Christ-Logos. Dès lors, les apologètes chrétiens ont pratiqué un vaste larcin en élaborant la figure paradoxale d'un logos de l'ineffable : ce n'est plus le raisonnement qui établit le vrai, c'est la révélation. Ils l'ont construit non comme religion mais comme "philosophie chrétienne", polémiquant ainsi contre le logos "païen". Une opération qui substitua, aux temps médiévaux, le théologico-politique à la philosophie. En pistant les effets politiques du larcin chrétien sur le devenir des Européens, ce livre manifeste à la fois l'essence polémique de la philosophie, et comment les Européens ont rejeté, notamment au sein des universités de Paris et d'Oxford à partir du XIIIe siècle, la captation chrétienne du logos héraclitéen. Ils concernent tout régime politique, qu'il s'agisse de la Principauté ou de la République. Cette dernière loin d'être le dénouement des apories du politique, constitue la forme de régime préférable parce qu'elle en incarne le déploiement à une échelle plus élargie, le "plus de vie" accordé au surcroît de la "virtu". (...) Ici la liberté et l'égalité républicaine ne relèvent pas de l'humanisme civique. Pensée du politique qui est celle d'un mode pariculier de spéculation, liée à la fois à la positivité de l'Histoire et à une écriture de la cohérence brisée, l'oeuvre machiavélienne perturbe toute philosophie politique en ouvrant à une réflexion tout autre sur l'essence de la vérité. "La vérité effective de la chose" se laisse ainsi saisir dans une pensée de l'essai pour laquelle les perspectives ne sont pas même multtiples mais incompatibles entre elles, sans espoir d'unification. Pouvons nous parvenir à connaître Dieu par l'exercice de notre intelligence ou bien devons nous nécessairement, passer par un acte de foi qui semble remplacer la raison? La question n'est pas d'aujourd'hui. Saint Thomas d'Aquin, théologien du XIIIème siècle, en a déjà longuement débattu. En faisant l'effort de nous replonger dans ses écrits très modernes, nous découvrons que la foi ne remplace pas l'intelligence mais au contraire en exige le recours indispensable. Ainsi, cette réflexion nous préserve-t-elle de tomber dans les (...) erreurs d'une idéologie qui défigure la dignité humaine comme le risque de l'intelligence artificielle ou de l'obscurantisme religieux. L'actualité nous met en présence de la confrontation de plus en plus violente entre l'indifférentisme de la laïcité et la religiosité sous une forme intégriste et radicale. En notre temps dit de postmodernité, le confinement de toute transcendance dans l'horizontalité d'une religiosité ambiante produit une confusion générale quant au sens même de la laïcité éducative, sommée de se définir, enfin, comme postchrétienne. En un temps où la formation des maîtres se trouve privée d'espace de formation, ce livre indique des parcours et des lieux d'analyse susceptibles de conforter, aussi bien les pédagogues et les éducateurs que le citoyen, dans l'idée que certains détours de lecture et de pensée (...) donnent de l'air, de l'espace, des appuis pour préserver et repenser, en retour, les tensions constitutives de l'exigence laïque. En un temps, aussi, où les replis communautaristes assaillent de plus en plus l'école, ce livre voudrait inciter quiconque se dit laïque à des détours réfléchis par la posture de l'autre. Ainsi il deviendra possible, dans l'enceinte scolaire élargie, de mieux faire la part entre ce qui, des convictions de tout un chacun peut être utilement soumis à une critique étayée, informée et ce qui, repéré, accueilli, doit être renvoyé à l'ultime espérance de chacun, hors champ de toute emprise.
