The notions of selflessness ( an tmaka ) and karman are two key concepts in Buddhist philosophy. The question how karman functions with respect to the rebirth of a worldling who is, actually, devoid of a self, was a major philosophical issue in early Buddhist doctrine. Within the Sarv stiv da school, the Vaibh ⋅ ikas became the representative of an interpretation of this problem that hinges on the notion of 'possession' ( pr pti ). Their theory was contradicted by (...) the Sautr ntikas, whose interpretation is based on the notion of 'seed' ( bīja ). The Sarv stiv da H daya treatises, compiled in a time period spanning from the beginning of the common era to the fourth century AD, i.e. the period of the rise of the Sautr ntika school, are a particularly interesting set of works, as they reflect the gradual development of these two major theories. The Sa gītipary ya is the earliest Sarv stiv da philosophical text that enumerates a series of contaminants (anuśaya) , i.e. innate proclivities, inherited from former births, to do something of usually evil nature. This early list comprises seven such contaminants. As it is the contaminants that lead a worldling (p thagjana) to doing volitional actions and thus to forming a karmic result (karmavip ka) , these contaminants naturally also bear on the path to salvation. The gradual development of the (...) peculiar Sarv stiv din path to salvation necessitated a gradual refinement and reinterpretation of the original list of seven contaminants. Apart from a mere technical aspect, this reinterpretation also reflects the viewpoint of the Sautr ntika school of Buddhist philosophy on the nature of contaminants, i.e. their acceptance of a latent and an active state of the defilements, vis- -vis the Vaibh ika viewpoint according to whom no such difference exists. Within Sarv stiv da literature, the H daya treatises illustrate this philosophical development. (shrink)

Jitendra Nath Mohanty, who passed away on the 7th of March 2023, was emeritus professor of philosophy at (...) Temple University, Philadelphia. In the last decade of his life, he used to spend long periods in his home in Kolkata, the city where he studied as an undergraduate. Born in in 1928 in Cuttack, Orissa, India, Mohanty ranked first in all public examinations and in his B.A. at Presidency College, Kolkata and his M.A. examination at the University of Calcutta. After receiving a Ph.D. from the University of Göttingen in 1954, he came back to India and continued his traditional-style tutelage under two great Sanskrit Pandits: Ananta Tarkatirtha (for Navya Nyāya) and Mahamahopadhyaya Yogendranath Bagchi (for Advaita Vedānta). In his long academic career, he taught at the University of Burdwan, the University of Calcutta, the New School for Social Research, the University of Oklahoma, Emory University, and Temple University and held visiting professorships at All Souls College Oxford and Jadavpur University, Kolkata.JNM was trained equally thoroughly in three distinct traditions and styles of philosophy. Comparative or cross-cultural philosophy can be seen as a relative newcomer to the field of philosophy. Abstrak: Mayoritas pembaca Platon menafsirkan filsafat Platon dalam perspektif dualisme, yaitu terdapat dunia idea (kosmos noetos) yang berlawanan dengan dunia indrawi (kosmos aisthetos). Cara tafsir ini menimbulkan banyak kontradiksi. Dalam estetika, E.H. Gombrich, sejarawan seni yang menelurkan teori Revolusi Seni Rupa Yunani, juga membaca Platon dalam tafsir dualisme. Gombrich menyimpulkan bahwa bagi Platon kontemplasi keindahan dapat membawa kita ke dunia idea yang transenden, sedangkan seni hanya menyenang-nyenangkan, mengelabui indra dan menggoda pikiran untuk terikat pada bayang-bayang. Padahal dalam teorinya sendiri, Gombrich (...) menjelaskan bahwa karya seni rupa Yunani terkemuka persis karena keindahannya yang dihidupkan dengan daya ilusif-persuasif. Tulisan ini hendak melempangkan kontradiksi tersebut dengan mengoreksi dunia idea - dunia indrawi menjadi alam visibel – alam inteligibel (horatos topos – noetos topos), istilah yang dipakai Platon dalam corpus-nya. Tulisan ini menyimpulkan bahwa Platon tidak menolak daya ilusif-persuasif yang terdapat dalam seni rupa melainkan menempatkannya sebagai instrumen untuk merealisasikan Agathon. Abstract: The majority of Plato’s reader interprets his philosophy in dualistic perspective, that there is the intelligible world (kosmos noetos) which opposed to the sensible world (kosmos aisthetos). This perspective caused many contradictions. In Aesthetics, E.H. Gombrich, an art historian who creates the Greek Revolution Theory, also read Plato under the perspective of dualism. For him, Plato thought that the contemplation of beauty can lead to the realm of transcendent ideas, while art can only flatter, deceive the senses and seduce the mind to feed on phantoms. Meanwhile, Gombrich also thought that Greek Art is beautiful precisely because of the power of illusion-persuasion. This article aims to reconcile the contradiction by replacing the intelligible world - sensible world to the intelligible realm - visible realm (topos noetos - horatos topos), the original term which Plato used in his corpus. And it concludes that Plato did not oppose the power of illusion-persuasion in art but placing them as an instrument to realize Agathon. Keywords: Illusion-persuasion, beauty, mind, intellect, art. MARK PRESSMAN Scholars have recognized that in the Treatise "Hume seeks to find a foundation for geometry in sense-experience."1 In this essay, I examine to what extent Hume succeeds in his attempt to ground geometry visually. I argue that the geometry Hume describes in the Treatise faces a serious (...) set of problems. Geometric Lines Hume maintains that ideas "are images" (T 6) which may be called up "when I shut my eyes" (T 3). "That we may fix the meaning of a word, figure," according to Hume, "we may revolve in our mind the ideas of circles, squares, parallelograms, triangles of different sizes and proportions, and may not rest on one image or idea" (T 22). As Arthur Pap notes, "'Idea' is in Hume's usage synonymous with 'mental image'." D.C.G. MacNabb also notes that "Hume thought of ideas as images, and primarily as visual images."2 When Hume argues, then, that "we have the idea of indivisible points, lines and surfaces conformable to the [geometer's] definition" (T 44), he is arguing that we have mental images of geometry's points, lines and planes. Consider geometric lines first. Geometers define a line "to be length without breadth or depth" (T 42). It is not apparent to everyone that we have mental images of such lines. According to "L'Art de penser" (T 43), published in 1662, it is impossible "to conceive a length without any breadth" (T 43). H. Hume, however, offers "clear proof" (T 44), in the form of two arguments, that we actually possess ideas or mental images of geometry's lines. First, we have ideas or mental images of lengths with breadth, though these are supposed never to be without breadth and thus not geometric lines. (A mental image oflength is also a mental image with length, just as "to say the idea of extension agrees to any thing, is to say it is extended" [T 240].) Hume reduces to absurdity the view that our mental images of length are always with breadth and thus not images of geometric lines. If our length-images were always with breadth, then our mental images would be endlessly divisible in breadth, since they would always have some positive breadth (T 43). But no mental image is endlessly divisible, for the mind arrives "at an end in the division of its ideas, nor are there any possible means of evading the evidence of this conclusion" (T 27). We thus have an idea or image of length without (divisible) breadth conforming to the geometer's definition (T 44). Second, we can imagine or picture the termination of a geometric plane. But a geometric plane must terminate in a geometric line (T 44). (Proof: Assume L is a line with breadth which terminates plane P. Since L has breadth, L must contain at least two parts, w and y, exactly one of which actually terminates P. But whether it is w or y, L doesn't terminate P, which was the assumption.) Since we can picture the termination of a geometric plane, we can picture a geometric line, length without divisible breadth. It is one thing to have ideas or mental images of geometric lines which may be called up "when I shut my eyes" (T 3). It is another for such objects actually to exist "in nature." Caesars "Bellum Civile" ist als Dokument römischer Geschichtsschreibung und als Quellenwerk über den Bürgerkrieg für jeden am antiken Rom Interessierten von außerordentlicher Bedeutung. Dennoch führt er neben dem "Gallischen Krieg" fast ein Schattendasein: zu Unrecht, wie sich erweist. Denn an Klarheit der Diktion und Prägnanz des Gedankens steht der "Bürgerkrieg" diesem nicht nach. Dazu ist der Zweikampf um die Macht zwischen Caesar und Pompeius ein erregender historischer Stoff, selbst dort, wo er weniger objektive Historiographie als eine Rechtfertigung für Caesars Handeln (...) darstellt. Es liegt Caesar daran zu beweisen, dass ihm der Krieg, den er gern vermieden hätte, vom Gegner aufgezwungen wurde und dass er selbst schuldlos daran sei. In Auseinandersetzung mit den Positionen von Chrysipp, Epikur und Karneades gelangt Cicero zur Auffassung, dass es für den menschlichen Willen keine von außen wirkenden und vorausgehenden Ursachen gebe, die diesen Entscheidungsprozess bestimmen. Die Mitte 44 v.Chr. begonnene und unvollendet gebliebene Schrift schließt sich unmittelbar an "De divinatione" und "De natura deorum" an.
