The great academic disputation of Ho-rak had been made for about 200 years since it began in 1709. An argument that the human nature and the nature of things are same or different was one of the main subjects for the great academic disputation. Gan Lee (李柬, 1677-1727) and Wonjin Han (韓元震, 1682-1751) were leading discussants of the argument. After Lee and Han, Neo-Confucian scholars in Joseon dynasty attempted comprehensively to synthesize their two views. But such Scholars as Seong-ju Lim (...) (任聖周, 1711-1788) and Jeongjin Ki (奇正鎭, 1798-1879) criticized a reformulation of One Principle and Many Differentiations. Lim argued that there was not only One Principle but also one vital breath as well as Many Differentiations of vital breath as well as One Principle. His idea of One Principle is relevant for a similarity between the natures of humans and things, and his idea of Many Differentiations is relevant for a difference between the natures of humans and things. Lim grasped that all the natures of things had two aspects of similarity and difference. But Gi criticized that their discussants were too narrowly specific in arguing this issue. He argued that One principle and Many Differences entailed each other. Like Lim's idea, his idea confirmed the sides of both, too. The nature of original substance is equivalent to the nature of existence. It seems to me that such a fruitful result of Korean philosophy, which an argument between the natures of humans and things had been distinctly made, for the future, will be an area of being made a deeper exploration from various aspects. This study investigated the possible mediation of career distress in the relationship between major incongruence and occupational engagement and whether this mediation depends on the degree of outcome expectation. Moderated mediation analysis was tested on a sample of 346 Korean undergraduate students. The results indicated that career distress mediated the relationship between major incongruence and occupational engagement. Moreover, the negative indirect effect of major incongruence on occupational engagement through career distress weakened as the level of outcome expectation increased. The significant (...) mediation effect of career distress is meaningful given the evidence on the role of emotion in career adaptation. In addition, the significant moderation effect of cognitive evaluation and belief in the mediating relationship on career problem, career emotion, and career behavior is meaningful in that it provides insights in cognitive intervention that could be effective in career counseling. The Korean Decimal Classification (KDC) is a national standard classification system of the Korean library community published and maintained by the Classification Committee of the Korean Library Association. This article examines its general history from its advent to the latest edition (KDC 6), its usage, external characteristics including format and layout, internal principles and characteristics including outline and classificatory principles applied, general aspects of the schedule and the major tables, development and maintenance, and general evaluation. Despite its long history of refugee crises, Asia lacks effective refugee protection mechanisms. Most Asian states resist ratification of the international refugee laws, and many international organizations are ineffective and lack concrete legal and political approaches to protecting refugees. Asian civil society, particularly Asia Pacific Refugee Rights Network, collaborates to protect refugees by employing alternative frameworks. This paper argues that Asian civil society aims to challenge the nature of refugee protection in Asia. Instead of encouraging states to ratify the 1951 (...) Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees, APRRN stimulates national-level implementation of refugee protection principles and practices from below. It engages its members in global decision-making by mobilizing and sharing resources with them. APRRN frames refugee protection as international human rights issue instead of as a national security concern. (shrink)

The purpose of the paper is to analyse the translation into English and Korean of the old Polish criminal law terminology used by Adam Mickiewicz in his renown poem entitled “Master Thaddeus, or the Last Foray in Lithuania: A Nobility’s Tale of the Years 1811–1812, in Twelve Books of Verse” Mickiewicz (Pan Tadeusz czyli ostatni zjazd na Litwie. Historia szlachecka z roku 1811 i 1812 we dwunastu księgach wierszem). The research methods used encompass the analysis of parallel texts of the (...) poem. The authors first selected the fragments of the poem containing criminal law terminology. Next analysed two translations into English (Biggs in Master Thaddeus, or the last Forey in Lithuania—by Adam Mickiewicz, an Historical epic poem in XII books, translated from the original by Biggs, with a Preface by W.R. Morfill, M.A. and Notes, by the translator and Edmond Naganowski, Trübner et Comp, London, 1885 and MacKenzie in Adam Mickiewicz. Pan Tadeusz or the Last Foray in Lithuania. A Tale of the Gentry in the Years 1811 and 1812 translated into English verse with Introduction by Kenneth R. Mackenzie, Polska Fundacja Kulturalna, Londyn, 1990) and one into Korean Cheong et al. (『판 타데우시』 [Pan Tadeusz] Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Seoul, 2005). The findings reveal that the terminology under scrutiny in the majority of cases must be considered obsolete and legal system-bound. Mickiewicz (1834) referred to the laws binding Poles under the Third Lithuanian Statute (Wilno, 1774). Therefore, the translators had to face the challenge of deciphering the appropriate meanings and finding equivalents sufficiently conveying them. (shrink)

We explored the need for an ecosystem approach based on relational systems when conducting research on South Korea’s cultural industry. We used Mollard’s (2009. L’ingeniere culturelle. Paris: PUF) idea of the participants in the French cultural system as a key reference and extended it to the notion of the platform, which is the core concept of South Korea’s cultural industry ecosystem (CIE). We also utilized the idea of the “semiotic square of consumption values” from Floch to explicate each platform and (...) participant, which play a significant role in South Korea’s CIE. By defining a role rooted in the relationship and values for each subject (i.e., the production, consumption, authority, and intermediary subjects), we aimed to better understand the ecosystem of the cultural industry and focused on K-pop as a specific aspect of South Korea’s cultural sector by identifying the current identity of each participant. 이 글은 19세기 이후 진행된 동아시아에서의 근대화, 산업화, 자본주의화, 식민지주의, 제국주의의 문제를 안중근이 제기하는 동아시아와 세계의 평화라는 문제의식을 중심으로 다룰 것이다. 먼저 안중근의 하얼빈 의거가 함축하고 있는 제국주의 제거의 세계사적 의미를 살펴보고, 그 다음 일본의 근대화 과정에서 드러나는 제국주의 형성 과정을 논의할 것이다. 이 글은 근대 물질문명이 지구적 차원에서 폭력화되어 군국주의와 제국주의로 드러나는 과정에 대한 니체와 고토쿠 슈스이의 비판을 비교하며, 안중근의 사상과 행위가 이러한 동시대적 문명비판의 궤도 위에서 움직이고 있었다는 것을 보일 것이다. 그리고 안중근의 사상이 물질문명과 제국주의 비판뿐만 아니라 평화로운 (...) 동아시아 공동체와 도덕적 정신문명의 형성에 주목하고 있다는 것을 살펴볼 것이다. 그의 동양평화론은 오늘날에도 세계평화에 기여할 수 있는 사상적 실마리와 정치철학적 함의를 지니고 있다. 본 논문은 청광자 이근주의 생애와 의리정신에 대해 고찰한 것이다. 그는 성품이 매우 강직했던 것으로 보인다. 그는 절의지사를 존경했고, 을미년 거의 때에는 동지들과 고난을 같이 하기 위해 스스로 체포되고자 했다. 경술년 국치 때에는 자결로써 의리를 지키고자 했고, 처사로서 자결하는 것을 세상 사람들이 오해할까 염려하여 처의론를 제시하기도 했다. 자결할 때 ‘존화양이척사부정(尊華攘夷斥邪扶正)’을 명분으로 삼았으며, 죽어서까지도 몸이 더렵혀지는 것을 걱정하여 화장해 줄 것을 당부했다. 이근주는 『맹자』의 ‘웅어장(熊魚章)’을 특히 좋아했는데, 이 부분이 그의 의리정신의 핵심 포인트이다. 그에 의하면 선비의 본업은 뜻을 키우는 것이다. 도에 뜻을 둔 (...) 자가 세(勢)를 쫒거나 생의 즐거움을 추구한다면 그는 이미 선비가 아닌 것이다. 그러나 세상의 선비라 칭하는 자들은 그렇지 못해서 ‘의’를 추구해야 하는 곳에서 ‘세’를 헤아리고 ‘생의 즐거움’을 추구한다. 이것이 을미년 거의가 실패하게 된 원인이요 작금에 펼쳐진 누란의 원인이다. 그가 경술년 국치 때 자결을 하게 된 것도 이 때문이다. 선비 된 자에게 망국은 도를 행할 터전을 잃어버렸다는 의미이다. 이런 상황에서는 도를 실천할 수도 없을 뿐만 아니라 그 자체 국권을 빼앗은 이적(夷狄)에게 봉사하는 길이 될 뿐이다. 그렇다고 선비 된 자가 ‘세’를 쫒으며 ‘생의 기쁨’을 위해 살 수도 없다. 성인의 덕화(德化)가 수천 년 이어져 온 내 나라를 버리고 다른 나라로 떠나는 것도 내키지 않는다. 의도(義徒)를 모집해 치욕을 설욕하고 싶어도 ‘세’를 쫒는 무리들 앞에서는 요연한 일일 뿐이다. 게다가 수십 년 간 병마에 시달려 몸도 가누기 힘든 상태이다. 결국 그가 선택할 수 있는 ‘사생취의(捨生取義)’의 길은 자결로서 선비의 삶, 즉 의리를 지키는 길밖에 없었다. 그는 지천명(知天命)의 나이에 이르러서야 비로소 ‘중화’의 위대함과 ‘이적’의 사악함을 깨달았다. 그래서 ‘대소중화(大小中華)’의 한결같은 가르침과 ‘인수화이(人獸華夷)’의 분변이 더 없이 소중하게 생각되었다. 이제부터라도 ‘화이’를 준별하는 선비의 삶을 살아야 한다. ‘절개를 세우는 자는 그 죽어야 하는 의리를 잡으면 나가서 죽을 뿐이다.’ 그가 ‘존화양이척사부정’이라는 8자(字)를 남기고 ‘화장’을 당부하며 생을 마감한 데에는 바로 이러한 뜻이 있었다. 그의 의리정신은 자결로서 민족적 자존의식을 대변하며 항일투쟁을 선도했다는 데에 의의가 있다. 사회진화론은 1880년대에 초기 개화사상가들에 의해 한국사회에 수용되었고 1900년대에는 일종의 시대정신으로 여겨지며 당시 국제사회를 해석하는 가장 유력한 사상적 프레임으로 기능하였다. 그러나 지금까지의 연구들은 1910년을 기점으로 사회진화론의 사상적 기능이 소멸되었다고 보거나 제한된 영역에서의 사상적 양상만을 고찰하였다. 본고에서는 1910년 이후로도 사회진화론의 영향력은 다양한 사상 속에 침투되어 변용적으로 존재해왔으며 동시에 그것을 극복하기 위한 시도도 있었음을 밝히고자 하였다. 먼저 안중근은 동양 3국[황인종]의 연대를 통해 서구 세력[백인종]의 침략을 막아야 한다는 동양평화론을 주장하였다. 이는 인종주의에 사회진화론을 결합한 것으로 서구의 침략을 일종의 동종(同種) 혹은 약자 연대를 통해 대항하고자 하는 (...) ‘저항적 인종주의’의 성격을 띠었다. 박은식은 사회진화론적 진보의 논리를 유학에 적용하여 당시 유학이 가지고 있었던 봉건성을 극복하고, 유학의 대동사상, 성선론 등을 통해 사회진화론의 인종주의적 우열론과 약육강식론의 비도덕성을 극복하고자 하였다. 1919년에는 제1차 세계대전 이후 파리강화회의가 개최되면서 ‘세계평화’가 화두로 제시되었고 ‘민족자결주의’, ‘세계주의’, ‘평화주의’ 등의 관념이 나타났다. 또한 러시아 혁명 및 사회주의 국가 건설 등을 계기로 사회주의, 아나키즘 등 새로운 사상이 등장하면서 사회진화론적 세계관에 균열을 가져온다. 이러한 사상적 흐름 속에서 안창호는 국제사회에서 여전히 약육강식의 논리가 통용되고 있음을 비판적으로 인식하고는 있었지만, 현실적으로 국제사회로부터 독립국으로서의 자격을 인정을 받기 위해서는 자강의 힘을 길러야 한다고 주장하였다. 그러나 그 힘의 토대에 근면, 성실, 신용 등 개신교적 자본주의 윤리와 민족주의적 공동체의식을 도입하여 사회진화론적 경쟁의 비도덕성을 극복하고자 하였다. 신채호는 약육강식에 의한 열강의 식민 지배를 ‘민중직접혁명’을 통해 타도해야한다고 주장했다. 이 과정에서 그는 세계 식민지 민중과의 연대를 주장하기도 했다. 그러나 역사를 ‘아(我)와 비아(非我)의 투쟁’ 즉, 자민족과 타민족의 생존투쟁의 기록이라고 봤던 그의 역사관은 사회진화론적 관점을 완전히 극복하지는 못한 것으로 보인다. 안중근과 박은식의 사상은 1910년을 기점으로 한 것이고 안창호와 신채호의 사상은 1919년 이후 주창된 것이다. 이들은 초기 사회진화론자들처럼 약육강식의 논리를 무비판적으로 수용하면서 소위 ‘문명국’의 ‘비문명국’에 대한 지배나 착취를 원리로서 인정하는 사고에서는 벗어났지만, 현실을 사회진화론적 프레임으로 바라보는 사고를 완전히 단절해내지는 못했다. 그러나 동양평화론, 유교, 자유민주주의, 아나키즘 등 각자가 취한 여러 가지 사상적 토대 위에서 사회진화론의 이론적, 현실적 문제를 극복하려는 시도가 나타났는데 그것이 1910년 이후 한국 사상계의 하나의 큰 특징이라고 결론지을 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 왜 박근혜 전 대통령은 탄핵을 당하지 않으면 안 되었는지, 儒家에서는 이를 어떻게 보며 정당화하고 있는지, 나아가 한 공동체의 우두머리에게 어떻게 경고를 주고 있는지를 논해보았다. 이를 위해서 먼저 사람세상을 꾸려서 살라는 유가의 전략 속에 담긴 논리를 짚어 보았는데, 유가가 폐쇄된 사람세상을 꾸리는 전략을 택하고 그 운용체제를 제시하였던 필연성과 불가피성을 동아시아가 농경사회였다는 점과 연관시켜 논하였다. 그리고 유가에서 말하는 군주다움의 정당성과 정통성이 어디에 있는가를 다루었다. 유가에서 비록 이를 하늘에 두었다지만, 그것이 궁극적인 것이 아니라 백성들에게 삶의 기반을 확보해줌이 보다 근원적이고 일차적인 것이라 (...) 함을 밝혔다. 그리고 이러한 점들을 논거로 하여, 박근혜 전 대통령 치하의 우리 민초들의 삶의 실상과 그의 국정농단으로 말미암아 진리와 정의가 사라져버린 현실을 거론하여, 결국은 그가 탄핵에 이르지 않을 수 없었다는 점을 논하였다. Yu Sung-jo’s Daehakjam was greatly influenced by Kwon-Geun’s Iphak doseol, and his Seongli yeonwon chwaryo actively utilized Cheng Fuxin’s Sishu zhangtu, etc. In Zhuzi, the heart-mind is synchronically explained to be composed of li and qi and diachronically encompasses xing and qing. Yu Sung-jo understood heart-mind in the perspective of mingde 明德 as a whole, meaning that the heart-mind in reality is only a state that has not fully maintained its mingde, and its essence is the same as mingde. (...) All living beings have heart-mind, but the characteristics of the human mind are specifically called mingde. The heaven is composed of li and qi, and all things created by the heaven is originally composed of the same li and qi, and among them, the heart-mind of human is more clever than any other, and xuling bumei 虛靈不昧 that only human possesses is called mingde, which is also called benxin. When it is said that the heart-mind is composed of xing and qizhi, there is an inherent commonality in the disposition that constitutes human’s mingde that distinguishes it from other living beings. However, qizhi of each person is different, and thus the state of mingde varies greatly. Yu Sung-jo emphasized the view of dividing xing into benranzhixing 本然之性 and qizhizhixing 氣質之性, and established the theory that the origin of the Four Sprouts is benranzhixing and the origin of the Seven Emotions is qizhizhixing. Yu Sung-jo also established a way of explaining both the Four Sprouts and the Seven Emotions in a way that combines li and qi. Yu Sung-jo’s academic system contributed greatly to shaping the common sense view of Zhuzi in later generations through the education at Sungkyunkwan, and may have had some influence on Toegye’s theory of Four Sprouts and Seven Emotions.
