Patricia Cook: A great many Hegel commentators have marveled at, and offered their interpretations of, the gallery of fascinating vignettes, metaphors, ironic illusions, and poetic or rhetorical images contained in Hegel’s Phenomenology. Donald Verene proposes to treat this “gallery of pictures” exclusively and in detail. His project is to understand the separation between imaginative thought and the evolution of the Concept - between das Bild and der Begriff - in the Phenomenology.

The fifteen distinctive essays in this volume aim first to develop what Christensen terms a critical or "process phenomenology," and subsequently to apply this critical perspective to the interpretation of several philosophers, and of several important philosophical topics.

Against critics who range from Husserl and Heidegger to Rorty and Foucault, Harris presents a renewed justification of the importance of systematic metaphysical inquiry along the lines advocated by R. G. Collingwood. Surveying the writings of Augustine, Kant, McTaggart, Husserl, Heidegger, and Adolf Grünbaum, Harris illustrates the importance of such "classical" metaphysical inquiry in coping with the familiar, but still unresolved, canon of conundrums associated with the problem of time.

A young Canadian mathematician and philosopher, Winthrop Bell, who was Edmund Husserl's first doctoral student from North America, taught as a postdoc at Harvard in the 1920s, where he took a complete set of notes in the first class at Harvard taught by Alfred North Whitehead during the 1924-1925 academic year. These notes, missing for over 80 years, have recently been found. The notes transform scholarship concerning the early development of Whitehead's mature metaphysical views, while the note-taker's own career illuminates (...) a remarkable collaboration between the pragmatists in the U. S. and Canada and the early phenomenology movement in Europe, an intellectual exchange that was shattered during the tumultuous events of World War I and its aftermath. (shrink)

O presente artigo pretende analisar os regimes de visibilidade em Michel Foucault, tendo como centro da investigação sua obra Vigiar e Punir: Nascimento da prisão, de 1975. Nesta obra, Foucault se debruça sobre os processos sócio-históricos que levaram a uma mudança no regime punitivo do Ocidente entre o século XVII e início do século XIX, em que um regime de soberania deu lugar a um regime disciplinar. Pretendemos mostrar que, para além de uma mudança no regime punitivo, tal movimento produziu (...) também uma mudança na economia de visibilidade, marcando uma ruptura entre uma visibilidade espetacular centrada na integralidade e ostensividade do visível e uma nova visibilidade panóptica, cujo centro é o princípio de “ver sem ser visto”. Por fim, faremos uma análise de algumas obras fotográficas do artista norteamericano Trevor Paglen de modo a evidenciar uma contraposição artística ao panóptico contemporâneo a partir de sua inversão funcional dentro do espaço de visibilidade, onde é o próprio dispositivo panóptico que passa a ser visto sem nada ver. This bibliography attempts to assess the unprecedented outpouring of literature devoted to the question of human rights which has occurred since 1975 largely, though not exclusively, as a result of international deliberations on the implementation of the Helsinki Final Act.The bibliography encompasses published contributions to this topic since 1975 in the humanities and social sciences; specifically the fields of philosophy, political science, history, comparative literature, religious studies and theology, economics, and sociology and law. The bibliography is limited, however, to essays (...) which focus primarily upon a broad analysis of the international human rights question. Essays discussing human rights or civil rights dilemmas in individual nation-states are included only insofar as such discussions are intended as case-studies of the broader international issues of human rights. In addition, essays which comprise primarily editorials or statements of personal opinion have been omitted in an attempt to keep this instrument within manageable bounds. (shrink)

Necessary and sufficient conditions are presented for the (first-order) theory of a universal class of algebraic structures (algebras) to have a model completion, extending a characterization provided by Wheeler. For varieties of algebras that have equationally definable principal congruences and the compact intersection property, these conditions yield a more elegant characterization obtained (in a slightly more restricted setting) by Ghilardi and Zawadowski. Moreover, it is shown that under certain further assumptions on congruence lattices, the existence of a model completion implies (...) that the variety has equationally definable principal congruences. This result is then used to provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a model completion for theories of Hamiltonian varieties of pointed residuated lattices, a broad family of varieties that includes lattice-ordered abelian groups and MV-algebras. Notably, if the theory of a Hamiltonian variety of pointed residuated lattices has a model completion, it must have equationally definable principal congruences. In particular, the theories of lattice-ordered abelian groups and MV-algebras do not have a model completion, as first proved by Glass and Pierce, and Lacava, respectively. Finally, it is shown that certain varieties of pointed residuated lattices generated by their linearly ordered members, including lattice-ordered abelian groups and MV-algebras, can be extended with a binary operation to obtain theories that do have a model completion. Abstract This article evaluates the ?drive toward greater autonomy? in lethally-armed unmanned systems. Following a summary of the main criticisms and challenges to lethal autonomy, both engineering and ethical, raised by opponents of this effort, the article turns toward solutions or responses that defense industries and military end users might seek to incorporate in design, testing and manufacturing to address these concerns. The way forward encompasses a two-fold testing procedure for reliability incorporating empirical, quantitative benchmarks of performance in compliance with (...) formalized and programmable rules of engagement, and a conception of ?due care? in product liability. This would be designed in analogy with procedures currently followed by well-intentioned governments and militaries with their own (human) military personnel, both to ensure against failure, and to accept responsibility and compensate victims of inadvertent and unintended accidents. The procedure is designed specifically to address objections first posed by Robert Sparrow (2007) and Noel Sharkey (2007), and echoed in P.W. Singer's critically acclaimed Wired for War (2009), that lethal autonomous systems cannot be meaningfully held accountable for commission of war crimes, and thus the development, manufacture, and deployment of such systems would constitute a violation of international law. From North Korea's recent attacks on Sony to perpetual news reports of successful hackings and criminal theft, cyber conflict has emerged as a major topic of public concern. Yet even as attacks on military, civilian, and commercial targets have escalated, there is not yet a clear set of ethical guidelines that apply to cyber warfare. Indeed, like terrorism, cyber warfare is commonly believed to be a war without rules. This book offers the first comprehensive exploration of the relevance of naturalism and theories of nature in Classical German Philosophy. It presents new readings from internationally renowned scholars on Kant, Jacobi, Goethe, the Romantic tradition, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, and Marx that highlight the significance of conceptions of nature and naturalism in Classical German Philosophy for contemporary concerns. The collection presents an inclusive view: it goes beyond the usual restricted focus on single thinkers to encompass the tradition as a whole, prompting (...) dialogue among scholars interested in different authors and areas.
