Inductive characterizations of the sets of terms, the subset of strongly normalizing terms and normal forms are studied in order to reprove weak and strong normalization for the simply-typed λ-calculus and for an extension by sum types with permutative conversions. The analogous treatment of a new system with generalized applications inspired by generalized elimination rules in natural deduction, advocated by von Plato, shows the flexibility of the approach which does not use the strong computability/candidate style à la Tait and Girard. It is also shown that the extension of the system with permutative conversions by η-rules is still strongly normalizing, and likewise for an extension of the system of generalized applications by a rule of ``immediate simplification''. How do opinion diversity and belief polarisation affect epistemic group decision-making, particularly if decisions must be made without delay and on the basis of permissive evidence? In an agent-based model, we track the consistency of group opinions aggregated through sentence-wise majority voting. Simulations on the model reveal that high opinion diversity, but not polarisation, incurs a significant inconsistency risk. These results indicate that epistemic group decisions based on permissive evidence can be particularly difficult for diverse groups. Gene therapy has emerged from the idea of inserting a wild‐type copy of a gene in order to restore the proper expression and function of a damaged gene. Initial efforts have focused on finding the proper vector and delivery method to introduce a corrected gene to the affected tissue or cell type. Even though these first attempts are clearly promising, seveal problems remain unsolved. A major problem is the influence of chromatin structure on transgene expression. To overcome chromatin‐dependent repressive transgenic (...) states, researchers have begun to use chromatin regulatory elements to drive transgene expression. Insulators or chromatin boundaries are able to protect a transgene against chromatin position effects at their genomic integration sites, and they are able to maintain transgene expression for long periods of time. To this end, we intend to demonstrate the centrality of the Principle of Sufficient Reason applied to the contingency of the passage to the existence of a given world. Once demonstrated the existence of God by these ways, and still taking into account the Principle of Sufficient Reason - now applied to the existence of this world in (...) particular -, we will discuss the theory of possible worlds and Leibniz’s thesis according to which the Actual World is the most perfect possible. Zusammenfassung Zur therapeutischen Versorgung depressiver Athleten kooperieren die Vereine und Verbände im Spitzensport häufig mit Psychotherapeuten. Der vorliegende Beitrag analysiert die komplexen Sinnvorgaben therapeutischer Kommunikation zur Behandlung depressiver Spitzensportler mit Hilfe der neueren soziologischen Systemtheorie. Die freiwerdenden Erkenntnisse werden unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der spezifischen Kontextbedingungen in Sportorganisationen reflektiert. Aus Sicht der Sportvereine und -verbände erweist sich die psychotherapeutische Intervention bisweilen als ambivalenter Problemlösungsversuch: Indem Psychotherapeuten systemfremde Logiken einbringen und mit inkongruenten Perspektiven arbeiten, um den Leidensdruck des betroffenen Athleten zu beheben, (...) können sie aufseiten der Organisation durchaus Irritationen stiften und neue Probleme erzeugen. We argue that Reasons Fundamentalism, as defended by T.M. Scanlon, faces two important difficulties—one ontological, the other epistemological—namely theontological proliferation problemand thereliability challenge.We suggest that formal constructivism can avoid these difficulties, and that Scanlon would do well to adopt it. We also show that Scanlon’s three main objections to this view depend either on a misunderstanding of what formal constructivism is or on a question-begging argument in favour of realism.

While a narratological reading of the Gospels is relatively well accepted, their characterisation as parts of the genre of ancient biography was much antagonised in former times. Although things have changed thanks to seminal monographs on the problem from the second half of the 20th century and to continuing work, some questions remain open. Therefore, a narratological comparison of Gospels with concrete representatives of the ancient bios could possibly help to clarify the relations between both. In what follows, the oldest (...) Gospel is read simultaneously with Plutarch’s Biography of the Younger Cato. Three observations are made: a) The structures of the narratives of Cato and of Jesus match to a high degree. Both protagonists carry out certain duties while operating in public. In most instances, they achieve great successes. From a certain point on, however, they irrevocably approach failure and ruin. This structure of story seems to form the basis both of the Gospel and of the biography of Cato, written ca. three decades later. b) Obviously, both works narrate the life of a man, his exceptional character, his extraordinary operations in public and his non-natural violent dead. In Plutarch’s version, the Younger Cato fails in the end. At first sight, also Mark’s Jesus fails to accomplish his mission. By God’s action he is turned into the saviour of the faithful however. This claimed unsurpassed relevance of the story is contrasted with the laconism of the narration. c) Both narrations are composed out of both factual and fictional elements. Thus, readers cannot separate both elements precisely in every instance. Both stories are imagined worlds designed for the in narratology so called game of fiction. As can be learned in Plutarch, authors of stories like the Life of Cato or the Gospel of Mark guarantee a certain sense of responsibility in their work. Summed up, the narratological comparison has illustrated both the close affinity and the individual specifications of both narratives. It thus helps to clarify the position- fixing of the Early Christian literature within its Graeco-Roman context. (shrink)

ZusammenfassungDie Forschung über Depressionen im Spitzensport wird bislang von Sportpsychologinnen und Sportpsychiatern dominiert. Gesellschaftstheoretische Perspektiven, die über die soziale Konstruiertheit des Gegenstands aufklären, sind demgegenüber deutlich unterrepräsentiert. Unter Rückgriff auf die soziologische Systemtheorie entwickelt der vorliegende Beitrag verschiedene Sichtweisen auf das gesellschaftliche Reden über die Depression im Spitzensport. Auf diesem Weg wird nicht nur der Beobachtungsrelativität des Phänomens Rechnung getragen. Vor allem werden die Unschärfen, blinden Flecken und Reflexionsdefizite offengelegt, die mit dem weitgehenden Fehlen komplex gebauter Theorien im gesellschaftlichen Diskurs (...) über das Thema einhergehen. Este artigo visa analisar de que modo as questões pertinentes à situação do Paraguai do Pós-Guerra da Tríplice Aliança serviram de instrumento de luta político-partidária entre nacionalistas e autonomistas durante a campanha presidencial argentina de 1873 e 1874. Para isso, foram consultados alguns jornais de Buenos Aires, uma vez que eram os principais canalizadores dos debates públicos e difusores de representações. Da análise das fontes pode-se apontar que a facção autonomista fez daquele conflito, da ocupação do Paraguai e das questões (...) pendentes daquele evento uma das suas principais armas de combate em sua luta eleitoral contra o nacionalismo. En este artículo se estudia un peculiar recurso discursivo de un cronista barroco del virreinato del Perú: un elogio de las mujeres criollas de la ciudad de Arequipa, que se transforma en una vindicación general de los indígenas como una forma de exaltar a la ciudad criolla a través de una serie de analogías históricas con experiencias e ideales de la tradición hispánica asumibles para una audiencia metropolitana.

Hermeneutics originates in the mediation of meaningful utterances understood as arising from a suprahuman, divine domain. The religious origin of hermeneutics is centrally connected with the history of Christianity both in the Patristic period, ending with St. Augustine, and in the modern era of Reformation and Counter‐Reformation. Schleiermacher outlines a general theory of interpretation, while resisting any claims to special status of biblical hermeneutics. This chapter charts both facets of hermeneutics before ending with the relation of hermeneutics to the phenomenology (...) of the sacred. The masters of suspicion, Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud, understood religion as a cultural phenomenon, and one which masks a deeper reality. The hermeneutics of religion continues to be a fundamental philosophical and theological concern. Hermeneutics and religious phenomena inform each other in the development of a hermeneutics of religion and an exploration of the religious origins of hermeneutics. (shrink)

This essay was written on the basis of a lecture given by its author in 1999, entitled “The status of human subject in the vestiges of Modernity”. Modernity, with capital letters, was the first ideological object reviewed.

El presente trabajo intenta reflexionar sobre la importancia pedagógica del afecto y del cuidado, no sólo en tiempos de pandemia, sino como elemento clave, aunque olvidado, del proceso educativo. Para ello, se expondrán las consecuencias de la pandemia y el confinamiento para la salud de la ciudadanía, en un contexto dominado por el Global Educational Reform Movement. A continuación, señalamos que las preocupaciones de las administraciones y organizaciones internacionales durante el confinamiento han estado centradas en la ‘mantener’ la presión sobre (...) el aprendizaje, mantener la máquina del aprendizaje, intentando mejorar el acceso y la conectividad online, y olvidando otras cuestiones como la situación de las familias y el alumnado. En este sentido, mostramos cómo la preocupación por el otro (familias y alumnado) ha sido una preocupación constante en muchos docentes, por encima incluso del curriculum establecido y del aprendizaje. Por último, y como complemento de las mejores prácticas educativas, analizamos qué supone el cuidado y el afecto para el proceso pedagógico, indicando que no se puede volver a la antigua normalidad, sino recrear una _nueva normalidad _basada en la ética del cuidado y en la justicia afectiva.
