Die erste systematische Schrift, die Ernst Cassirer veröffentlicht hat, ist das Buch »Substanzbegriff und Funktionsbegriff« von 1910, in dem er sich mit dem Problem der mathematischen und naturwissenschaftlichen Begriffsbildung auseinandersetzt. Als »Faktum« legte er den damaligen Stand der Wissenschaft zugrunde, der das klassische System der Physik noch als unbestritten galt. Mit den Fortschritten der Wissenschaften, in diesem Fall der Entwicklung der theoretischen Physik, muss die Erkenntniskritik Schritt halten. Und so drängten sich im Laufe der Zeit neue Fragen auf, die (...) der philosophischen Behandlung bedurften. Aus dieser Motivation heraus veröffentlichte Cassirer 1920 die Schrift »Zur Einsteinschen Relativitätstheorie« (ECW Bd. 10), in der er sich mit der Um- und Neubildung der modernen Physik durch die allgemeine und spezielle Relativitätstheorie beschäftigt. Um dem philosophischen Ideal der methodischen Analyse und erkenntniskritischen Grundlegung gerecht zu werden, ergab sich jedoch die Notwendigkeit, auch die Auswirkungen der Quantentheorie in die Reflexion mit einzubeziehen. Den historischen Ursachen und systematischen Gründen der Sprengkraft, die die Quantentheorie auf dem ganzen Gebiet der Physik entwickelte, geht Cassirer in der Schrift »Determinismus und Indeterminismus in der modernen Physik« nach, die er 1936 abschließt. In this contribution, the author engages in a conversation with Christopher Southgate on the relationship between social evil and what is called natural “evil.” Theologically, this centers around an understanding of creation and fall. It is argued that Southgate typically treats soteriology and eschatology as themes pertaining to an evolutionary theodicy, whereas an adequate ecotheology would discuss the problem of natural suffering under the rubric of the narrative of God's economy. The question is then how that story is best told.

SummaryIn order to use modern infinitary mathematics in the natural sciences, human beings have developed a corresponding picture of the world. The gnomes have made a similar step for their trade — books e.g. are sold and bought in infinite sets. In a gnomic‐human dialogue the problems arrising from such attitudes are discussed and a path from modern to postmodern mathematics is sketched.

Problem: Radical constructivism, although having a very successful base in research on mathematics and science education, has not become a generally accepted theory of knowledge. Purpose: This paper discusses possible sources of aversion. Results: The first section makes explicit the unavoidability of accepting the responsibility for one’s thinking and acting, a responsibility that under stressful circumstances one would rather avoid. Another section suggests the origin of the human quest for certain knowledge. The third section introduces the notion of “stickiness of (...) beliefs.” Implications: Constructivism has powerful implications for everyday attitudes and social relations with others. This paper, it is hoped, may induce some readers to investigate these implications. (shrink)

Repeatedly discrepancies arise between regulations of state legislation and the moral teachings of the Catholic Church. Against this backdrop, this paper seeks to define the role of theological ethics or moral theology. The discussion of the legal regulation of assisted suicide in Germany after the BVerfG ruling of 26. 2. 2020 will serve as an example. First, the current legal situation in Germany and the reaction of the churches with their respective justifications will be presented. Subsequently, the self-understanding of theological (...) ethics, as it developed after the Second Vatican Council is considered. One question concerns how the relation between revelation and moral norms is defined in this new self-understanding, in order then to present the associated normative justification theory in contrast to corresponding traditional models of argument. This clarifies the independent role of theological ethics vis-à-vis the educational institutions, which role enables unreserved opening up to social reality. Finally, the question of assisted suicide is addressed, using the principle of proportionality as a fundamental ethical principle. Accordingly, wherever possible, means milder than suicide should be chosen first to solve the underlying problems. Nevertheless, from a theological-ethical point of view, assisting another person’s suicide does not always seem to be unlawful and culpable. (shrink)
