This book focuses on sovereignty referendums, which have been used throughout different historical periods of democratization, decolonization, devolution, secession and state creation. Referendums on questions of sovereignty and self-determination have been a significant element of the international political and legal landscape since the French Revolution, and have been a central element in the resolution of territorial issues from the referendum in Avignon in 1791 until today. More recent examples include Quebec, East Timor, New Caledonia, Puerto Rico and South Sudan. The (...) global aim of this book is to achieve a better empirical and legal understanding of sovereignty referendums and related problems in international and national law and politics. El objetivo de nuestro trabajo está en exponer el punto final de la argumentación de Foucault acerca del cuidado de si cristiano ( epimeleia ton allon ), demostrando que la epimeleia ton allon cristiana está muy relacionada a la modalidad de gobierno de las almas y de los cuerpos que Foucault denomina de pastorado cristiano. Intentaremos demonstrar como la recusa de Foucault en aceptar una auténtica epimeleia heautou cristiana resulta en un inevitable vínculo de ésta con el nacimiento de la (...) biopolítica moderna. Estamos dispuestos a evidenciar que era inevitable, para Foucault, hacer dichas consideraciones y llegar a esta conclusión, uniendo en una misma línea epimeleia ton allon cristiana, gobierno pastoral y biopolítica moderna. En el trascurso de nuestro texto, utilizaremos los argumentos de Agamben, expuestos principalmente en su obra El reino y la gloria , en la cual él trata del cruce de dos paradigmas: teología política y economía política. Sceptics have been accused of achieving their sceptical conclusions by an arbitrary (though usually implicit) redefinition of terms like “justified”, so that, while it may be true that no belief is justified in the sceptic’s new sense of the word, all the beliefs we have taken as justified remain so in the ordinary, standard meaning of the term. This paper defends scepticism against this charge. It is pointed out that there are several sorts of case where someone’s belief may be (...) properly termed justified in one “sense”, or from one “point of view”, but from another, equally properly termed unjustified. It is argued that the point of view of the sceptic, or the sense in which he uses the term, is one of the perfectly standard ones, and not some arbitrarily introduced new sense. In addition, an explanation that is not damaging to scepticism is provided of a sceptic’s own continued ascriptions of justifiedness in everyday contexts. (shrink)

A set of constraints forces trade-offs which prevent us from achieving the best possible definitions of the ‘level’ and ‘unit’ of natural selection. This set consists in decisions concerning conflicting pre-analytic intuitions in problematic cases, the relative roles of various conceptual resources in the definitions, which facts need to be accounted for using the definitions, how the relation between selection and evolution orients the definitions, and the relation between the level and unit concepts. Systematic reconstruction and evaluation of leading analyses (...) along these dimensions favors a new functional analysis over Williams’ consequentialist analysis, Sober’s causal analysis, and Dawkins’ teleological analysis. The author investigates some Plotinus’ metaphors such as: war as the father of all things, universal life as a theatre performance, longings, works and horrors of bloody terrestrial life as a childish "external game", a battle as pyrrhic… All the mentioned metaphors are important for correct interpretation of ideas by the late Hellenistic philosopher. Plotinus’ doctrine of chaocosmic harmony is stated in its comparison with the data of modern science (of synergetics). The author of the paper confirms a conclusion that (...) the oriental ideas range exerted influence on the great Antique thinker’s creative work.
