Exploring morally relevant issues facing families in their decisions to monitor the health-related behaviours of loved ones.D. Gammon, E. K. Christiansen & R. Wynn - 2009 - Journal of Medical Ethics 35 (7):424-428.
Patient self-management of disease is increasingly supported by technologies that can monitor a wide range of behavioural and biomedical parameters. Incorporated into everyday devices such as cell phones and clothes, these technologies become integral to the psychosocial aspects of everyday life. Many technologies are likely to be marketed directly to families with ill members, and families may enlist the support of clinicians in shaping use. Current ethical frameworks are mainly conceptualised from the perspective of caregivers, researchers, developers and regulators in (...)

Catholicism Opening to the World and Other Confessions: Vatican Ii and its Impact.John Borelli, Drew Christiansen, Gerard Mannion, Jason Welle O. F. M., Vladimir Latinovic, John O’Malley, Agnes de Dreuzy, Charles E. Curran, Matthew A. Shadle, Patricia Madigan, Mary McClintock Fulkerson, Anne E. Patrick, Jan Nielen, Agnes M. Brazal, Paul G. Monson, Dale T. Irvin, Dagmar Heller, Anastacia Wooden, Mark D. Chapman, Dorothea Sattler, Patrick J. Hayes, Susan K. Wood, H. E. Cardinal W. Kasper & Brian Flanagan - 2018 - Springer Verlag.
This volume explores how Catholicism began and continues to open its doors to the wider world and to other confessions in embracing ecumenism, thanks to the vision and legacy of the Second Vatican Council. It explores such themes as the twentieth century context preceding the council; parallels between Vatican II and previous councils; its distinctively pastoral character; the legacy of the council in relation to issues such as church-world dynamics, as well as to ethics, social justice, economic activity. Several chapters (...)

Language as shaped by the brain; the brain as shaped by development.Joseph C. Toscano, Lynn K. Perry, Kathryn L. Mueller, Allison F. Bean, Marcus E. Galle & Larissa K. Samuelson - 2008 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 31 (5):535-536.
Though we agree with their argument that language is shaped by domain-general learning processes, Christiansen & Chater (C&C) neglect to detail how the development of these processes shapes language change. We discuss a number of examples that show how developmental processes at multiple levels and timescales are critical to understanding the origin of domain-general mechanisms that shape language evolution.

Gow and Page are of the opinion that Planudes’ àένναος in the fifth line of this epigram may be not his conjecture but the true reading, and reject Jacobs' commonly received emendation àєί λáνος, with κηρο in the following line. But I have no doubt that for the two words μέν àλανóς we should read μєμαλαγαγμένος for ó μєμαλαγαγμένος κηρóς is the regular gloss1 on the waxy substance called μàλθα or μàλθα which was used in Athens—at the time of Sophocles (...)

    (1 other version)A Note on Some Unusual Greek Words for Eyes.E. K. Borthwick - 1980 - Classical Quarterly 30 (1):252-256.
In Proceedings of the Cambridge Philological Society N.S. 14, 68, D. C. C. Young drew attention to a curious variant in the text of Longus 2.2.1, where, in a description of how, at the vintage, women ‘eyed’ Daphnis, A has concluding that ‘brothers’ must be a colloquial expression for ‘eyes’, he was however unable to cite any other example of this usage, but compared ‘picked men’, in Paulus Silentiarius, a locution found in a small range of other authors, as well (...)

    Cleon and the Spartiates in Aristophanes' Knights.E. K. Borthwigk - 1967 - Classical Quarterly 19 (2):243-244.
In 394 most editors of the Knights read, cited uniquely from this passage in the lexica, in the sense ‘dry up, parch’, referring, for the condition and appearance of the prisoners after long captivity and privations, to Nub. 186, where the allusion is to the squalor and emaciation of the Socratics. Now Aristophanes' skill in maintaining allusively an image, once a keyword has been supplied, makes me wonder how line 394 was intended to complete the metaphor of the harvest and (...)

    Two Textual Problems in Euripides' Antiope, Fr. 188.E. K. Borthwick - 1967 - Classical Quarterly 17 (01):41-.
In a recent article I drew attention to the fact that the well-known fable of the improvident cicada and the industrious ant has a close resemblance to the story of the twin brothers Amphion and Zethus and their classic debate on the respective merits of the artistic and practical life in Euripides' Antiope, which is reflected not only in the argument of Callicles and Socrates in the Gorgias and Horace, Ep. i. 18.

    Syntax: a linguistic introduction to sentence structure.E. K. Brown - 1991 - London: Harper-Collins Academic. Edited by J. E. Miller.
The study of syntax is fundamental to linguistics and language study, but it is often taught solely within the framework of transformational grammar. This book is unique in several respects: it introduces the basic concepts used in the description of syntax, independently of any single model of grammar. Most grammatical models fail to deal adequately with one aspect of syntax or another, and the authors argue that an understanding of the concepts used in any full description of language is crucial (...)
