I should like to qualify my remarks at the outset by saying that I lay no claim to a philosophical, rigorously scientific solution of the problem of the interaction between science and art. And although this problem has concerned me as an artist, for me it is, I must admit, even a bit uncomforatable to address an audience of philosophers with my random observations and notions on this subject. However, the problems posed by the development of modern science and technology (...) today concern all human beings; artists are no exception. Moreover, it is specifically from artists that many people await an explanatory presentation of today's "magi and sorcerers," upon whose activity so much in life now depends. In accordance with our capacities we, artists of the film, also seek to find some view of our own on the processes and changes currently occurring in the world. It is precisely for this reason , that I have been so bold as to undertake to share a number of my impressions, with the hope that the editors and readers of the journal will forgive my lack of training in philosophy. The prospects for realistic interpretation of the nature of initial mathematical truths and objects are considered in the article. The arguments of realism, reasons impeding its recognition among philosophers of mathematics as well as the ways to eliminate these reasons are discussed. It is proven that the absence of acceptable ontological interpretation of mathematical realism is the main obstacle to its recognition. This paper explicates the introductory positions of this interpretation and presents a realistic interpretation of the arithmetical component of (...) mathematics. In summary, we should like to note that such constructions, as it is shown to us, ought to bring the direct use not only for the philosophical foundation of mathematics but for mathematics itself. In the justification of the author’s conclusions based on the works of famous mathematicians of the twentieth century, interpreting their findings in a broad historical and philosophical context. To illustrate his point, the author gives examples of arithmetic and geometry - both Euclidean and non-Euclidean. (shrink)

Scale invariance is considered in the context of gravitational theories where the action, in the first order formalism, is of the form S=∫ L 1 Φ d 4 x+∫ L 2 $\sqrt{-g}$ d 4 x where the volume element Φ d 4 x is independent of the metric. For global scale invariance, a “dilaton” φ has to be introduced, with non-trivial potentials V(φ)=f 1 eαφ in L 1 and U(φ)=f 2 e 2αφ in L 2 . This leads to non-trivial (...) mass generation and a potential for φ which is interesting for inflation. Interpolating models for natural transition from inflation to a slowly accelerated universe at late times appear naturally. This is also achieved for “Quintessential models,” which are scale invariant but formulated with the use of volume element Φ d 4 x alone. For closed strings and branes (including the supersymmetric cases), the modified measure formulation is possible and does not require the introduction of a particular scale (the string or brane tension) from the begining but rather these appear as integration constants.
