Richard Wagner has come to be seen as the quintessential artist of the nineteenth century, whose work embraces all the arts of the period. Dieter Borchmeyer here provides the first systematic and comprehensive account of Wagner's aesthetic theory, examining his hitherto neglected prose writings and his ideas on music drama from the various standpoints of literature, the linking of ideas, and the sociology of art. The pre-eminent importance for Wagner of classical Greek art and mythology emerges (...) with particular clarity, while his links with the great figures and forms of world theatre - Shakespeare, the commedia dell'arte, the popular theatre, and the puppet theatre - are traced in detail. It has often been recommended that the differing probability distributions of a group of experts should be reconciled in such a way as to preserve each instance of independence common to all of their distributions. When probability pooling is subject to a universal domain condition, along with state-wise aggregation, there are severe limitations on implementing this recommendation. In particular, when the individuals are epistemic peers whose probability assessments are to be accorded equal weight, universal preservation of independence is, with a (...) few exceptions, impossible. Under more reasonable restrictions on pooling, however, there is a natural method of preserving the independence of any fixed finite family of countable partitions, and hence of any fixed finite family of discrete random variables. In our research project, we will elaborate Charles Sanders Peirce’s three philosophical categories, and show how these categories operate at the levels of Protection, Regulation and Identity in the process of sign-meaning and sign-making within Cultural Heritage, Law and Discourse. The process of semiosis comprises a triadic dimension between signs, their functions and interpretations, operating on four axes within our special issue: Theoretical Cultural Heritage Issue, Cultural Heritage and Postcolonialism, Intertwined Notions of Heritage and Culture, and Protection of Cultural Heritage.

Cooperation and the allocation of common resources are core features of social behavior. Games idealizing both interactions have been studied separately. But here, rather than examining the dynamics of the individual games, the interactions are combined so that players first choose whether to cooperate, and then, if they jointly cooperate, they bargain over the fruits of their cooperation. It is shown that the dynamics of the combined game cannot simply be reduced to the dynamics of the individual games and that (...) both cooperation and fair division are more likely in the combined game than in the constituent games taken separately. Angesichts der Komplexität des Menschenrechtsdiskurses ist es hilfreich, Distinktionen vorzunehmen. Unter der Rücksicht der den Rechten korrelierenden Verantwortlichleiten ist neuerdings eine Trias menschenrechtlicher Verpflichtungen in Entwicklung begrif-fen, die Beachtung verdient. Mit ihrer Hilfe kann bewusst gemacht werden, dass eine umfassende Sicherung der Menschenrechte von Seiten ihrer Adressaten sowohl ein Achten als auch ein Schützen als auch ein Gewährleisten verlangt. Mit ihr kann der den Menschenrechtsdiskurs durchziehende Dualismus von negativen Abwehr- und positiven Leistungsrechten überwunden und kann die Interdependenz der Verpflichtungen be-rücksichtigt (...) werden. In exemplarischer Absicht lässt sich die Angemessenheit der Pflichtentrias anhand des Rechts auf Religionsfreiheit aufzeigen. Dieses Recht hat der Staat zu achten, indem er Übergriffe in die religiöse Freiheit der Individuen unterlässt. Er hat es zu schützen, wenn durch Dritte oder Gruppierungen seine Verletzung droht. Und er hat es zu gewährleisten, indem er durch aktives Handeln die Infrastruktur zur Verfügung stellt, die religiösen Individuen wie Gemeinschaften seine Wahrnehmung ermöglicht.In view of the complexity of the human rights discourse, it is helpful to draw distinc-tions. From the perspective of the responsibilities correlating with the rights, a triad of human rights obligations is recently developing, which deserves attention. With its help it can be made clear that comprehensive safeguarding of human rights demands, from the side of their addressees, respecting as well protecting as well as fulfilling the human rights. In this way the dualism of negative "Abwehrrechte" and positive "Leistungs-rechte", pervading the human rights discourse, can be overcome and the interdepend-ence of the obligations can be taken into consideration. By way of an example the ade-quacy of the triad of duties can be demonstrated by means of the right of religious free-dom. The state has to respect this right be refraining from infringing upon the religious freedom of individual. It has to protect it, if its violation threatened by other individuals or groups. And it has to fulfill it by providing, through active acts, the infrastructure which enables religious individuals or groups to exercise it. (shrink)

Die Arbeit behandelt das Verhältnis von Beobachtungs- und theoretischer Sprache anhand der Typenlogik und der Erkenntnistheorie Bertrand Russells. Seine Typentheorie wird auf seine Erkenntnistheorie angewandt. Seine Typentheorie macht deutlich, warum schon aus formalen Gründen eine theoriefreie Beobachtungssprache unmöglich ist.

Kant is by no means the pure rationalist that Husserl and others represented him as being. To the contrary I claim that Kant is an ethical intuitionist when it comes to our recognition of the validity of the moral law. Interpreting Kant’s famous thesis about the “fact of reason”, I will first argue for three interpretative theses: 1. The factum theory explains our insight into the binding character of the moral law; it is a theory of justification. 2. In our (...) consciousness of the categorical imperative, the moral law is immediately given in its unconditional and binding validity. 3. The unconditional validity of the CI is given in the feeling of respect. Drawing on basic thoughts of Reformed Epistemology, I will then sketch a way to defend Kant’s theory. (shrink)

This chapter offers an essay on the evolution of evolvability. It investigates the most frequently cited arguments against the possibility that the evolution of evolvability might be the result of selection favoring more evolvable genotypes. The chapter argues that all these arguments have not been rigorously analyzed by their proponents, and are thus a self-inflicted blind spot in evolutionary biology, and indicates that there are no deep conceptual obstacles for population genetic theory to explain the evolution of evolvability.
