The purpose of the present paper is to clarify the different ways in which the young Max Horkheimer received Schopenhauer’s philosophy in his early writings Aus der Pubertät. The text analysis reveals that the young Horkheimer adopted during the 1914-1916 period a romantic perspective and a more illuministic one in the 1917-1918 period. This paper specifically focuses on a novel from the first period, Eva, from which it appears that Horkheimer subscribed to Schopenhauer’s doctrine of the aesthetical genius in an (...) original way. In 15 years, the international community has been blamed for resorting too easily to the use of force on some occasions (Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo), and also it has been blamed for intervening too late or not at all in other crises (Rwanda, Bosnia and today Sudan and Congo). Even today, one of the most contested questions of international politics is the legitimacy for the use of force. David Chandler, Professor of International Relations at the University (...) of Westminster (UK) and Daniele Archibugi, a research director at National Research Council (Italy) and Professor at Birkbeck College (University of London), discuss about the use of force, how the theory and practice of warfare and humanitarian intervention have evolved in the contemporary world and the international responsibility of states. In his Empire in Denial: The Politics of State-building (Pluto Press), David Chandler has forcefully argued that Western interventions are destablizing exercises of power without responsibility. Daniele Archibugi has been equally critical of these armed interventions, although in his The Global Commonwealth of Citizens. Toward Cosmopolitan Democracy (Princeton University Press), he urges for a cosmopolitan responsibility based on non-violence and inclusion. Clôture et maison close : les mots des écrivains. La consultation informatisée d’un corpus de textes permet de repérer quand et à quel propos les écrivains emploient les mots clôture et maison close. En ce qui concerne les femmes, la religieuse retirée dans un monastère et la prostituée assignée à une maison de tolérance représentent deux figures opposées de l’enfermement. We argue that many optimization methods can be viewed as representatives of “forcing”, a methodological approach that attempts to bridge the gap between data and mathematics on the basis of an a priori trust in the power of a mathematical technique, even when detailed, credible models of a phenomenon are lacking or do not justify the use of this technique. In particular, we show that forcing is implied in particle swarms optimization methods, and in modeling image processing problems through optimization. (...) From these considerations, we extrapolate a principle for general data analysis methods, what we call ‘Brandt’s principle’, namely the assumption that an algorithm that approaches a steady state in its output has found a solution to a problem, or needs to be replaced. We finally propose that biological systems, and other phenomena that respect general rules of morphogenesis, are a natural setting for the application of this principle. (shrink)

Cosmopolitics, the concept of a world politics based on shared democratic values, is in an increasingly fragile state.

Cet article est une réponse directe à certains critiques du projet de démocratie cosmopolitique, qui insistent sur l’absence de détails sur les acteurs politiques, économiques et sociaux susceptibles d’avoir un intérêt à soutenir ce programme. Nous montrons qu’il existe différentes manières de développer la gouvernance démocratique au niveau mondial, qui sont associées à divers acteurs politiques, économiques et sociaux trouvant leur intérêt dans un projet de ce genre. La démocratie cosmopolitique est donc un projet ouvert dont le but est de (...) rendre la gouvernance mondiale plus responsable, plus transparente et plus légitime. La palette des acteurs et des mesures présentée ici met en avant l’orientation et les choix politiques nécessaires pour faire de ce projet une réalité. (shrink)

Not only the vertical direction of images – perceptually subject to the law of gravity and its consequences – plays an important role in their interpretation; the horizontal direction left-right too seems to foster different interpretations from its converse. For this reason there are subjects and genres of painting, such as the Annunciation or the portrait, revealing some constants from this point of view, in their representation conventions. And for this same reason there are languages​​, like comics, where the left-right (...) direction is critical not only for the succession of panels – clearly bound to the direction of verbal writing – but also for the panel’s internal organization. These reflections suggest a cultural explanation of the differences in horizontal organization in pictures, linking it to the habits of writing, while ruling out the explanations making reference to the physiology of brain. A partir da crítica a um modelo de mobilidade, próprio ao modo de vida nas sociedades capitalistas contemporâneas, baseado na ideia de avanço contínuo, autoengendrado e objetivamente orientado, propomos a reflexão a respeito de uma forma alternativa de expressão do movimento e, consequentemente, de construção de subjetividades. Através da análise da técnica de dança Contato Improvisação, buscamos identificar e analisar os elementos que contribuem para a experiência concreta de uma mobilidade sem metas, que também leva a outra maneira de nos (...) entendermos como sujeito e nos relacionarmos com o mundo e as coisas a nossa volta. O improviso nos coloca diante de uma mobilidade sem orientação, que abre espaço para a imprevisibilidade. Já o contato nos estimula a mobilizar uma relação com o mundo que enfatiza a aproximação e vulnerabilidade no lugar do distanciamento e da autonomia individual. (shrink)

ABSTRACT In this paper, I demonstrate that the concept of resistance is fundamental in order to understand Schelling’s account of freedom. First, I argue that Schelling, in his early works, contends that the resistance opposed by nature to our individual will is fundamental for human beings to actualise freedom. Moreover, I show that Schelling maintains the centrality of resistance even in his philosophy of nature, and I demonstrate that resistance is that fundamental ontological occurrence which grounds the opposition between the (...) basic forces of matter, and without which matter itself would not exist. Accordingly, resistance is also that material occurrence through which freedom can concretely take place in its being limited and constrained by necessity. Finally, I also show that Schelling reiterates such an understanding in his Freiheitsschrift, namely I argue that resistance is a fundamental occurrence even for the struggle between good and evil, which in turn implies that resistance inevitably influences our individual will and actions. On these grounds, I conclude by arguing that freedom can be understood as a matter of resistance, since it arises and is made possible only through resistance itself. (shrink)

This book offers a cutting-edge interpretation of the philosophy of F.W.J. Schelling by critically reconsidering the interpretations of some of his "successors". It argues that Schelling's philosophy should be read as an ontology of immanence, highlighting its relevance for ongoing debates on ethics and freedom. The book builds on a key notion from Schelling's Philosophy of Revelation where he outlines the process through which transcendence must return to immanence in order to be grasped and understood. The author identifies Jaspers, Heidegger, (...) and Deleuze as the main interpreters of Schelling's philosophical activity, highlighting their relevance for subsequent Schelling scholarship. Heidegger and Jaspers refer to Schelling's philosophy in negative terms, namely as an incomplete and unviable philosophical system, whereas Deleuze holds the immanent core of Schelling's ontological discourse in high regard. The author's analysis demonstrates that reading Schelling's philosophy as an ontology of immanence not only avoids Heidegger's and Jaspers's criticisms but is also more fitting to Schelling's original meaning. Accordingly, his reading allows us to fully grasp Schelling's thought in all its strength and consistency: as a philosophy that avoids metaphysical abstractions and maintains the concreteness of concepts like God, nature, freedom by binding them to a solid and material account of Being. Finally, the author uses Schelling to propose an innovative reading of freedom as a matter of resistance, and of philosophy as an activity whose main purpose is that of seeking the actual extent and place of (human) life and freedom within nature. The author originally emphasises the relevance of these conclusions on contemporary debates in Postcolonial Critical Theory and Environmental Ethics. The aim of this study is to discuss an original philosophical contribution made by Philoponus, who in In Cat. 18, 14–22 equates koinon in its most peculiar meaning with the concept of koinônia understood as a particu­lar case of Platonic methexis. First, the paper analyzes the passages where the Neoplatonic commentators of the Categories distinguish four distinct meanings of the Aristotelian concept of koinon. Subsequently, this article emphasizes the differences between Philoponus’ herme­neutical suggestions and those of the other commentators. Philopo­nus (...) clarifies that while every koinon is methekton, Aristotle’s koinon is characterized by the fact that the participation is ex isou and kata meros. Thus, koinônia, according to Philoponus, is a particular case of methexis, where everyone participating in something participates in it equally and singly. The example cited by Philoponus to explain Aristotle’s koinon is that of men participating equally and singly in human nature. The study concludes with a discussion of the relationship among the concepts of koinon, koinônia and methexis. (shrink)

This paper presents a new interpretation of Michel Foucault’s critical project. It is well known that Foucault’s genealogical critique does not focus on issues of justification, but instead tackles “aspectival captivity,” that is, apparently inevitable limits of thought that constrain the agent’s freedom but that, in fact, can be transformed. However, it has not been recognized that, according to Foucault, critique can proceed along two distinct paths. In a key passage of “What Is Critique?,” Foucault states that critique is tasked (...) with questioning truth about its effects of power and with questioning power about its discourses of truth. We show that this “double movement” organizes Foucault’s critical project as a whole, giving it a significantly wider scope and a more complex structure than has been previously acknowledged. At the heart of the above-mentioned bifurcation lies an apparent tension between two contrastive roles Foucault assigns to truth-telling in the context of critique: on the one hand, truth-telling (as avowal) is a target of critique; on the other, truth-telling (as parrhesia) is one of critique’s methods. We argue that combining these two dimensions in a unified account is crucial for understanding and re-evaluating Foucault’s critical project as a whole. By showing that truth-telling remains an essential element of Foucauldian critique, this paper also rectifies some influential misinterpretations according to which Foucault’s critical project seeks to eliminate truth from the picture. The Frege-Geach problem is a central issue in metaethics, challenging expressivist theories to justify logical inferences involving moral expressions. Expressivists argue that moral statements express attitudes rather than truth-apt propositions, yet this position struggles with preserving logical coherence in contexts where moral claims are unasserted. Solutions to this problem include Simon Blackburn’s approach involving higher-order attitudes, Mark Schroeder’s ”being for” framework, and Allan Gibbard’s theory of factual-normative worlds. Each framework contributes insights, yet a comprehensive resolution may necessitate combining linguistic and (...) pragmatic analyses with metaethical perspectives to clarify inference patterns in expressivist reasoning. According to Bokulich and Frappier, understanding thought experiments as Waltonian props for the imagination cannot explain their evolution, since their content is fixed by prescriptions to imagine. That is, fictional truths constrain researchers’ imagination not to imagine otherwise. I suggest that the normative dimension of imagination is more flexible than Walton claims, especially in the context of TEs. Feyerabend’s philosophy shows this by highlighting the fruitful role of violating prescriptions to imagine. I focus on the power of subjective imaginings to (...) develop TEs-based debates. Readers of TEs are receptive researchers who rely on an initial fictional narrative to challenge the epistemic stance for which a TE was designed. This dialectical process can be framed through Waltonian notions of “work world” and “game worlds”: the intersubjective set of fictional truths provided by a prop and the subjective imaginings of participants in the game of make-believe. According to Walton, proper players create their game worlds by building on the work world and trying to minimize mismatches. However, Feyerabend’s philosophy emphasizes the importance of divergent game worlds. By violating fiction-based constraints, researchers engaged in a TE give their creative game worlds such a prominent role that they eventually evolve the work world itself. (shrink)

Use of the drill in Archaic sculpture : the technique of the running drill. In most works treating the techniques of ancient Greek sculpture, the date of appearance of the running drill varies between the beginning of the second half of the 5th c. and the third quarter of the 4th c. B. C. No mention of a use in the Archaic period is made and the technical definitions are often unclear, going as far as confusing the tool with the (...) manner of its use. The study of tool marks, undertaken within the framework of research on the techniques of Archaic Greek sculpture, shows that the running drill appears to have been in use toward the middle of the 6th c. at Samos, then in a more sustained manner at the end of the 6th and the beginning of the 5th c. at the Athenian Akropolis and at Delphi.
