    Moral luck in team‐based health care.Daniel Story & Catelynn Kenner - 2021 - Nursing Philosophy 22 (1):e12328.
Clinicians regularly work as teams and perform joint actions that have a great deal of moral significance. As a result, clinicians regularly share moral responsibility for the actions of their teams and other clinicians. In this paper, we argue that clinicians are exceptionally susceptible to a special type of moral luck, called interpersonal moral luck, because their moral statuses are often affected by the actions of other clinicians in a way that is not fully within their control. We then argue (...)

    Publishing Matters.Hugh Kenner - 2019 - Common Knowledge 25 (1-3):278-284.
In this essay Kenner meditates on the past, present, and future of university publishers and scholarly publishing. He reflects in particular on the financial pressures resulting from changes in tax laws that have contributed to the decline of the scholarly monograph, and he considers as well the pressures generated by the development of online publication. He further tells cautionary tales, from his own experience, that underscore how important it is that the public stewards of scholarship and literature at academic (...)

Cybernetics in the Republic.Michele Kennerly - 2023 - History of the Human Sciences 36 (1):80-102.
Plato's Republic lurks in cybernetics, a word popularly attributed to US American mathematician Norbert Wiener (1894–1964). In his accounts of how he came up with it, however, Wiener never mentions Plato, though he does note it was formed from the ancient Greek word kubernētēs (navigator). Among the earliest popular books about the cybernetics craze are three published in France, and their authors show a special interest in the origin of cybernetics. In something like learned rebukes to Wiener, all three books (...)

    Causality, Determinism and Freedom of the Will.Lionel Kenner - 1964 - Philosophy 39 (149):233 - 248.
The classical determinist argument is that every event has a cause, that every event in the universe is an effect whose sufficient and necessary conditions are the state of the universe immediately preceding it. For this reason we could not have done otherwise than we did. We do not have free-wills and hence we are not morally responsible for our thoughts and actions. The classical deterministmay, however, modify his position and agree that not every event inthe world has a cause, (...)

Judaísmo enoquita: pureza, impureza e o mito dos vigilantes no Segundo Templo.Kenner Roger Cazotto Terra & Abdruschin Schaeffer Rocha - 2019 - Horizonte 17 (52):148-166.
The article proposes to discuss the categories of "purity" and "impurity" as tools for structuring reality and constructing identities in the context of Enochic Judaism in the Second Temple period. Investigate them, in a special way, from the Myth of the Watchers narrated in the Book of the Watchers, which composes the apocalyptic literature of 1 Enoch. Both the homogeneity verified in the lineage guaranteed the purity of the race and, consequently, the establishment of the identity, as well as the (...)

  12. Philosophy of medicine in austria.Thomas Kenner - 1985 - Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics 6 (1).
It seems impossible to completely cover the field indicated by the title of this report because of the many contributions of individual physicians and non-physicians to problems of the philosophy of medicine in Austria, and to their solution. The main trends are rooted in historic developments and in the current problems of medicine and health care, which are similar world-wide. In Austria famous names like empress Maria Theresia or the physician Ignaz Semmelweis have to be mentioned in connection with the (...)

Mass media & mass murder: American coverage of the holocaust.Evelyn Kennerly - 1986 - Journal of Mass Media Ethics 2 (1):61 – 70.
In recent years, historians David S. Wyman and Deborah E. Lipstadt have contended in carefully documented books that the U.S. media provided inadequate coverage of Holocaust developments. Thus, these historians contend, American media helped create public apathy, which led to inadequate responses of the Roosevelt administration to requests for aid to Holocaust victims. Wyman believes ?several hundred thousand?; Jews might have been saved from gas chambers if the United States had insisted on determined Allied rescue action earlier than belated efforts (...)

  20. The risk concept in medicine — statistical and epidemiological aspects: A case report for applied mathematics in cardiology.Thomas Kenner & Karl P. Pfeiffer - 1986 - Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics 7 (3).
In this study the theory of risk factors is discussed. The risk-concept is essential in cardiology and is, furthermore, important not only in medicine in general, but also and particularly in ecology. Since environmental risk factors endanger our health, ecological risks have to be taken as medical problems. If a factor or a set of factors is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for a disease we speak of a risk factor or of risk factors. Statistical analysis of risk (...)

The practice of corporate social performance in minority- versus nonminority-owned small businesses.Judith Kenner Thompson & Jacqueline N. Hood - 1993 - Journal of Business Ethics 12 (3):197 - 206.
This study compares corporate social performance in terms of charitable contributions of minority-owned and nonminority-owned small businesses. In this sample, minority-owned small businesses are younger, have less full-time employees, and lower annual sales. Minority-owned small businesses donate more funds to religious organizations than nonminority-owned small businesses. When annual sales are accounted for, minority-owned businesses contribute more total dollars to all charitable organizations than nonminority-owned firms. Suggestions for future research in this area are delineated.

Risk is the probability that within a certain time some expected negative event will take place. In medicine risk can be related to a decision or to some intrinsic factors which are associated with the probability of the occurrence of a disease. Decisions can be necessary in the individual life with respect to the question of visiting a physician or performing a certain diagnostic or therapeutic procedure. The introduction of new pharmaceutical or technical products into medical use are another set (...)

The possible relationship between widespread unauthorized copying of microcomputer software (also known as software piracy) and level of moral judgment is examined through analysis of over 350 survey questionnaires that included the Defining Issues Test as a measure of moral development. It is hypothesized that the higher one''s level of moral judgment, the less likely that one will approve of or engage in unauthorized copying. Analysis of the data indicate a high level of tolerance toward unauthorized copying and limited support (...)

Pentecostalismos, racismo e Direitos Humanos.David Mesquiati de Oliveira & Kenner Roger Cazotto Terra - forthcoming - Horizonte:98-98.
Pentecostalism meant a break with Protestant anthropology hostage to the epistemology of Modernity. As Havey Cox explains, these American movements in the early years of the 20th century filled the ecstatic deficit left by evangelicals, pointing towards the affective system of knowledge of reality, an affective epistemology. If, on the one hand, the Pentecostal experience encouraged the shift from the margin to the center of corporeality, on the other, the violated and subjugated bodies became visible and empowered, because marginalized groups, (...)

    Kenner’s Networks.Evan Kindley - 2021 - Critical Inquiry 47 (3):525-543.
This article explores the concept of the network as it appears in the early writing of the literary scholar Hugh Kenner. Anticipating the widespread use of network in the humanities today, Kenner adapts the term from Marshall McLuhan and uses it throughout the 1950s and ’60s to think about intellectual networks, little magazines, and academic communication. The network concept is also considered in light of Kenner’s political conservatism and his participation in the midcentury movement of conservatism.

Johann Gottfried Eichhorn, the most influential theologian in German-speaking academia around 1800, favourably reviewed the work of Jewish translators and exegetes of the Bible such as David Friedländer, Aaron Wolfssohn, and Joel Löwe in his Allgemeine Bibliothek der biblischen Litteratur and opened this periodical to their contributions. This article retraces this intellectual exchange and places it in the historical context of the emancipation debates.
