In the first part of this essay, we will develop an idea of the Islamic science, which makes it possible to understand its integration in the field of Metaphysics. In the second part, we will develop some key notions in ibn Sina's Natural Philosophy, which shows how the human reality is linked to the scientific conception of nature, and completely inserted in it, as opposed to what occurs in the Modern Scientific Paradigm.

Resumen Este escrito es fruto de una investigación documental y bibliográfica realizada en el Archivo General del Consejo Episcopal Latinoamericano. Busca presentar una síntesis del impulso que ha realizado el CELAM en orden al diálogo interreligioso. Este no ha sido un camino fácil y aún hay mucho por hacer. No obstante, en el ámbito de la Iglesia Católica, el CELAM ha sido un permanente animador de las orientaciones de los obispos en esta temática, plasmadas en el Concilio Vaticano II y (...) las Conferencias Generales del Episcopado Latinoamericano.This paper is the product of documentary and bibliographic research in the General Archives of the Latin American Bishops’ Council and it endeavors to provide a synthesis of the efforts that CELAM has made in regard to interreligious dialogue. This has not been an easy path to follow and there is still much more yet to be done. However, in the context of the Catholic Church, CELAM has been a persistent dynamic force, encouraging bishops on this topic, according to the guidelines found in the documents of Vatican II and the General Conferences of Latin American Bishops. Dorothy Day, Etty Hillesum, María Skobtsov, Edith Stein, Simone Weil y María Zambrano, con su escritura humanizadora y de resistente, nos proporcionan un mensaje con el que construir un pensamiento compasivo y poético para iluminar un mundo desencantado.

BackgroundIn specific situations it may be necessary to make an exception to the general rule of informed consent for scientific research with an intervention. Earlier reviews only described subsets of arguments for exceptions to waive consent.MethodsHere, we provide a more extensive literature review of possible exceptions to the rule of informed consent and the accompanying arguments based on literature from 1997 onwards, using both Pubmed and PsycINFO in our search strategy.ResultsWe identified three main categories of arguments for the acceptability of (...) a consent waiver: data validity and quality, major practical problems, and distress or confusion of participants. Approval by a medical ethical review board always needs to be obtained. Further, we provide examples of specific conditions under which consent waiving might be allowed, such as additional privacy protection measures.ConclusionsThe reasons legitimized by the authors of the papers in this overview can be used by researchers to form their own opinion about requesting an exception to the rule of informed consent for their own study. Importantly, rules and guidelines applicable in their country, institute and research field should be followed. Moreover, researchers should also take the conditions under which they feel an exception is legitimized under consideration. After discussions with relevant stakeholders, a formal request should be sent to an IRB. (shrink)

Analyses of errors from a sequential auditory recall experiment indicated that perceptual factors influence the shape of the serial position curve of recall errors. The signal to noise ratio and presentation rate of the stimuli, as well as presentation rate during a prior training session, affected item and order errors. For experiments in which Ss simply monitored the auditory sequences for a preassigned critical item, and in which items were recalled in addition to monitoring, analyses of montoring RTs provided evidence (...) that the requirement to recall induces perceptual difficulties. Time is analyzed as being those processes by which a system notes the processes which comprise its own existence. The directionality of time is given by the concepts, past, present, and future. To understand the meaning of these concepts, a set of experiments was carried out with four male subjects in which areas of time were expanded or ablated by means of post-hypnotic suggestions. These operations were carried out singly or in combination. The data suggest that the present is primarily (...) associated with stimulus input, the past with the criteria for defining that input as well as the development of response inhibitions and the future with the directionality of that input. Marked personality changes which range from the occurence of catatonic-like states to obsessive types of reaction and manic-like reactions are associated with different combinations of time alterations. Some of the changes are in accord with the serialist position on time of J. W. Dunne. The concept of death is very important both with regard to one’s view of time and how one lives. While it is important to live in the present, the present has no meaning without at least a past or a future. Implications of these findings for psychopathology in general and schizophrenia in particular are considered. (shrink)

La panorámica que nos presentan las obras recientes que intento relacionar, ofrecen categorías que abren un camino esperanzador para el diálogo ecuménico entre católicos y pentecostales. The panorama offered by recent works, which I attempt to relate, offers categories that open a hopeful path for ecumenical dialogue between Catholics and Pentecostals. With difficulties and challenges, certainly, but founded on interdisciplinary and interfaith experiences of great significance. In the analysis and systematization that I present, I highlight the categories of: Culture of encounter; Ecclesiology of communion; Trinitarian baptism; Recognition of the identity and diversity of Latin American Pentecostalism; the possibilities of the Methodology of seeing, judging and acting applied to ecumenical pastoral activity and the discernment of Pentecostalism and, finally, the future possibilities of an ecumenism that embraces the Pentecostal movement. Previous research (Palij & Aaronson, 1989) has shown that age of English acquisition (AEA) does not affect recall of English words even though SAT verbal scores systematically decrease with increasing AEA. We report an experiment using a forced-choice recognition task with an intervening verbal task based on the SAT. Correct recognition was unrelated to AEA while performance on the verbal task decreased as a function of AEA. We examine some mechanisms for this dissociation.

En la primera parte de este estudio desarrollamos una idea de la ciencia islámica que hace posible comprender su integración en la esfera de la metafísica. En la segunda parte, desarrollamos algunas nociones centrales de la fi losofía natural de ibn Sina que muestran de qué modo la realidad humana está unida a la concepción científi ca de la naturaleza e inserta plenamente en ella, a diferencia de lo que acontece en el paradigma científi co moderno.

The United States Government does not mandate that US based firms follow US social and environmental law in foreign markets. However, because many developing countries do not have strong human rights, labor, and environmental laws, many multinationals have adopted voluntary corporate responsibility initiatives to self-regulate their overseas social and environmental practices. This article argues that voluntary actions, while important, are insufficient to address the magnitude of problems companies confront as they operate in developing countries where governance is often inadequate. The (...) United States can do more to ensure that its multinationals act responsibly everywhere they operate. First, policymakers should define the social and environmental responsibilities of global companies. They must consistently make their expectations for global business clear – and underscore that this objective can often be accomplished without mandates. Second, the US should closely examine the policies that undermine global Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and address the many conflicting signals sent by policymakers. Third, the President should make the US government a CSR model by examining how to use its purchasing power to promote human rights. Finally, the US government should require pension funds to report on the social and environmental consequences of their investments. In these ways, Americans can mind our business – and thus make sure that US based firms do not undermine social and environmental progress when they operate in the developing world. (shrink)

This article aims to enlarge the conversation about religion and public education by inviting readers to think about the benefits to be gained in society by providing a comprehensive religious studies curriculum in our public schools. In such a program, students will develop knowledge and understanding about various religious traditions, forge greater respect for the religious (and nonreligious) other, and think through existential concerns that have interested human beings for thousands of years. While recognizing that such a program is deeply (...) contentious, we nevertheless reason that students, as participants in a democracy as well as members of a global community, must have the skills, tools, and knowledge to function in a religiously diverse world. We answer some questions about graphs that are reducts of countable models of Anti-Foundation, obtained by considering the binary relation of double-membership $x\in y\in x$. We show that there are continuum-many such graphs, and study their connected components. We describe their complete theories and prove that each has continuum-many countable models, some of which are not reducts of models of Anti-Foundation.

En este artículo se exploran las aporías entre política y conflicto presentes en el pensamiento de Étienne Balibar. El texto explica, primero, cómo el conflicto es consustancial a la política y cómo, al mismo tiempo, un antagonismo excesivo puede imposibilitar la política sumiéndola en una espiral de violencia. En segundo lugar, el artículo muestra distintas estrategias para atemperar el antagonismo tales como el agonismo y la civilidad. Por último, en relación con este último concepto, se plantea la posibilidad de pensar (...) el sorteo como un dispositivo de civilidad en cuanto que favorece una ruptura con el consenso posdemocrático y una atemperación de la violencia. Frente a la perspectiva antropológico-jurídica dominante, fundada en la desconfianza, la sospecha y el temor, abordamos un paradigma alternativo, basado en la necesidad de fiarse del otro y en el establecimiento de lazos cooperativos, cuyo núcleo reside en (...) un sentido profundo de la responsabilidad, el compromiso y la solidaridad. La fiabilidad y la fidelidad aparecerán, a lo largo de este breve diálogo con el autor, como elementos internos e incluso constitutivos del derecho y, por tanto, algo así como su “centro de gravedad permanente”. Resumen:La reflexión sobre la exigencia de evitar la guerra y asegurar la paz mundial es hoy, quizá más que nunca, una de las principales tareas de la filosofía política y de la filosofía del derecho. El trabajo aborda la aportación de Virginia Woolf a esta reflexión en varios de sus escritos y, en especial, en su ensayo Tres guineas, considerado uno de los referentes más lúcidos de la genealogía femenina del pensamiento pacifista. El discurso antifascista, antimilitarista y antipatriarcal de Woolf (...) da cuenta de los vínculos existentes entre estas tres raíces profundas del belicismo. Frente a las relaciones de fuerza, el hecho de vivir fuera del imaginario del poder se presenta aquí como oportunidad de acometer tareas civilizatorias imprevisibles. La experiencia y el saber de las mujeres, marginados a lo largo de la historia, pueden ser rescatados subversiva y creativamente para generas prácticas políticas no-violentas y aspirar a una redefinición global de la vida en común.Abstract: Today, one of the main tasks of political philosophy and the philosophy of law is, perhaps, to reflect on the need to avoid war and ensure world peace. This paper discusses the contribution made by Virginia Woolf to this reflection in several of her writings and especially in her essay Three Guineas, which is regarded as one of the most striking examples of pacifist thinking by a female writer. Woolf’s anti-fascist, anti-militarist and anti-patriarchal discourse recognises the links between these three deep roots of warmongering. In the face of struggles for power, the reality of living outside the imaginary of power is presented here as an opportunity to carry out unforeseeable civilizing tasks. Women’s experience and knowledge, which has been marginalised throughout history, can be set free subversively and creatively to generate non-violent political practices and aspire to a global redefinition of coexistence. Este texto estudia cómo las reflexiones de Étienne Balibar a propósito de la relación entre democracia y ciudadaníacontribuyen a reanudar una cuestión importante para revalorizar la democracia: la nueva práctica de la política. Asimismo, este es un problema que bajo la expresión “dictadura del proletariado” aparecía previamente en sus escritos entrañando una aguda reflexión acerca de la exclusión política que implica la división “intelectual” y “manual” del trabajo. Además, el artículo pretende mostrar que dicha práctica de la política podría verse (...) enriquecida examinando una particular articulación entre ciudadanía y democracia no atendida del todo por Balibar: la democracia ateniense. En este estudio, en el que hemos tomado como centro de referencia el catálogo (ai-Fihrist) del erudito musulmán del siglo X de nuestra era Muhammad Ibn Ishak an-Nadí'm, nos proponemos trazar, en primer lugar, las líneas del desarrollo del pensamiento matemático y del pensamiento astronómico en el mundo del Islam desde el siglo VIII hasta el siglo XVII; y, en segundo lugar, y al hilo de nuestra traducción al texto de Ibn an-Nadí'm, indicar en lo posible y de acuerdo a (...) las investigaciones más recientes, los aportes individuales de los matemáticos y astrónomos que vivieron entre Jos siglos VIII y IX de la era cristiana. Con ello pretendemos ofrecer un capítulo casi olvidado de algunos aspectos del cultivo de la ciencia en un determinado período de su historia dentro de un determinado ámbito cultural a partir de sus propias fuentes. Asimismo, pretendemos dar un balance del estado actual de las investigaciones en este campo con el fin de llamar la atención sobre el profundo cambio de perspectivas que se está realizando en la historia de la ciencia2 y que, en Jo tocante al legado musulmán, encuentra su punto de giro en la obra del gran erudito turco, profesor de la Universidad de Frankfurt, Fuad Sezgin•. The extended Church-Turing thesis posits that any computable function can be calculated efficiently by a probabilistic Turing machine. If this thesis held true, the global effort to build quantum computers might ultimately be unnecessary. The thesis would however be strongly contradicted by a physical device that efficiently performs a task believed to be intractable for classical computers.
