  2. The history and evolution of psychology: a philosophical and biological perspective.Brian D. Cox - 2019 - Milton Park, Abingdon, Oxon: Routledge.
The History of Psychology course occupies an unusual but critical place in the psychology curriculum at most universities. As the field has become ever more specialized, with the various subdisciplines branching off, The History of Psychology is often the one course where the common roots of all of these areas are explored. Asking not only "What is psychology?" but also "What is science?" "Why is psychology a science?" and "How did it become one?" this book examines how the paradigm of (...)

Death Concerns, Benefit-Finding, and Well-Being During the COVID-19 Pandemic.Cathy R. Cox, Julie A. Swets, Brian Gully, Jieming Xiao & Malia Yraguen - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, reminders of death are particularly salient. Although much terror management theory research demonstrates that people engage in defensive tactics to manage mortality awareness, other work shows that existential concerns can motivate growth-oriented actions to improve health. The present study explored the associative link between coronavirus anxieties, fear of death, and participants' well-being. Results, using structural equation modeling, found that increased mortality concerns stemming from COVID-19 were associated with heightened benefit finding from the pandemic. Increased benefit (...)

A Buddhist crossroads: pioneer European Buddhists and globalizing Asian networks 1860–1960.Alicia Turner, Laurence Cox & Brian Bocking - 2013 - Contemporary Buddhism 14 (1):1-16.
Single-country approaches to the study of Buddhism miss the crucial significance of international networks in the making of modern Buddhism, in a period when the material basis for such networks had been transformed. Southeast Asia in particular acted as a dynamic crossroads in this period enabling the emergence of a ?global Buddhism? not controlled by any single sect, while India and Japan both played unexpectedly significant roles in this crossroads. A key element of this process was the encounter between Asian (...)

From Duverger to Cox, and beyond: The State-of-the-Art in Electoral Law Studies.Brian J. Gaines - 2000 - Japanese Journal of Political Science 1 (1):151-156.
Prior to its publication, Gary Cox's MakingVotesCount was widely and eagerly anticipated. (Indeed, some years ago, I received a referee report dismissing my submission as unnecessary because superior analysis would eventually appear in Cox's then forthcoming manuscript.) Upon its release in 1998, the book was instantly lauded: it collected multiple awards, including the prestigious Woodrow Wilson prize for best book published on government, politics, or international affairs. This acclaim was scarcely surprising – Cox has been one of the foremost scholars (...)

In the most recent and influential study of the matter, Maudemarie Clark maintains that, properly understood, perspectivism is "an obvious and nonproblematic doctrine. ''~ In a similar vein, Brian Leiter has recently argued that "perspectivism turns out to be much less radical than is usually (...)

Evaluation of Viewpoints of Health Care Professionals on the Role of Ethics Committees and Hospitals in the Resolution of Clinical Ethical Dilemmas Based on Practice Environment.Brian S. Marcus, Jestin N. Carlson, Gajanan G. Hegde, Jennifer Shang & Arvind Venkat - 2016 - HEC Forum 28 (1):35-52.
We sought to evaluate whether health care professionals’ viewpoints differed on the role of ethics committees and hospitals in the resolution of clinical ethical dilemmas based on practice location. We conducted a survey study from December 21, 2013 to March 15, 2014 of health care professionals at six hospitals. The survey consisted of eight clinical ethics cases followed by statements on whether there was a role for the ethics committee or hospital in their resolution, what that role might be and (...)

The origin and end of modernity.Brian Trainor - 1998 - Journal of Applied Philosophy 15 (2):133–144.
In this article, I suggest that post‐modernism is in essence a return, under radically different circumstances and with a cultural inheritance from the modernist era , to a kind of medievalism. The view that the ‘trend of our times’ is towards a ‘post‐modern medievalism’ is based mainly upon a consideration of the decline of the nation‐state, the replacement of ‘absolute’ with a kind of ‘moderated’ national sovereignty and the fact that the nations and regional assemblies of Europe are beginning to (...)

The article describes the nature of a faceted classification, and its application in document retrieval. The kinds of facet used are illustrated. Procedures are then discussed for identifying facets in a subject field, populating the facets with individual subject terms, arranging these in helpful sequences, using the scheme to classify documents, and searching the resultant classified index, with particular reference to Internet search.

Queer Indigenous Entropy: Sexual Circulation and the Conquest Narrative.Brian Joseph Gilley - 2014 - Anthropology of Consciousness 25 (2):165-180.
Two-Spirit men's sexual conquest stories—or what I am calling sexual coup stories—narrated more than just the sexual encounter. In fact, actual sexual acts are often secondary to the circumstances producing the sexual encounter. In this study, coup stories serve as a form of data revealing the ways in which sexual conquest is a sociosexual practice thoroughly embedded in broader Native community values and cultural patterns for the movement of bodily desire across landscapes predating humanist intellectual and moral intervention. Thus, the (...)

This chapter argues that the doctrines developed over time, in order to make best sense of the historical phenomena considered in the last two chapters, themselves contribute to the cumulative case for Christian belief, in so far as their logic, their scope and their power provide the most theoretically and existentially convincing account of existence, predicament and its resolution, and of what one may hope for. While what the different world religions have in common needs to be borne in mind, (...)

  40. Ethical Roles in Epictetus.Brian Earl Johnson - 2012 - Epoché: A Journal for the History of Philosophy 16 (2):287-316.
Epictetus holds that agents can determine what is appropriate relative to their roles in life. There has been only piecemeal work on this subject. Moreover, current scholarship on Epictetus’s role theory often employs Cicero’s narrow and highly schematic role theory as a template for reconstructing Epictetus’s theory. I argue against that approach and show that Epictetus’s theory is more open-ended and is best presented as a set of criteria that agents must reflect upon in order to discover their many roles: (...)

Revelations: a sociology of uncovering.Brian Rappert - 2025 - New York, NY: Routledge.
From tabloid headlines to scientific discoveries to investigative documentaries, the claim that truth is being revealed is commonplace today. Such attention-grabbing claims can conjure allure, sell products, launch careers, cement authority and much more besides. And yet, despite the familiarity of revelation-talk, this notion has been subject to limited academic theorizing to date outside of matters divine. Revelations sets out to examine both how the making available through revealing is accomplished as well as the implications of revealing. In other words, (...)

    Technical notes on a theory of simplicity.Brian M. Scott - 1996 - Synthese 109 (2):281 - 289.
Recently Samuel Richmond, generalizing Nelson Goodman, has proposed a measure of the simplicity of a theory that takes into account not only the polymorphicity of its models but also their internal homogeneity. By this measure a theory is simple if small subsets of its models exhibit only a few distinct (i.e., non-isomorphic) structures. Richmond shows that his measure, unlike that given by Goodman's theory of simplicity of predicates, orders the order relations in an intuitively satisfactory manner. In this note I (...)
