Que la tâche de fonder la morale soit particulièrement ardue, nul n'en doute, et la diversité des positions philosophiques en ce domaine nous incline à souscrire à la formule célèbre de Schopenhauer: « Prêcher la morale est chose aisée, la fonder chose difficile.» Tout penseur qui forme le dessein de fonder la morale est done en droit de se demander si un tel problème ne passe pas l'entendement humain et s'il sera jamais possible à l'homme de le résoudre. « Quel (...) est le fondement de la morale? », voilà une question qui semble s'imposer tout naturellement à notre réflexion, dût-elle par ailleurs demeurer sans réponse. Et pourtant, n'y a-t-il pas lieu de mettre en question la question elle-même et de s'interroger sur sa légitimité? Si une telle interrogation paraît, à première vue, insolite, c'est sans doute parce que, lorsque nous parlons de «fonder la morale», notre pensée s'oriente d'emblée vers la recherche du fondement, sans que l'on songe à mettre en doute le « bien-fondé » de l'acte même de fonder. C'est précisément pour souligner notre intention de ne point éluder une question aussi radicale que nous avons formulé le thème de notre réflexion de la manière suivante: « Peut-on et doit-on fonder la morale? ». This book addresses the breach within contemporary philosophy with a newly conceived foundationalism. It shows that dramatic discord has arisen between its two dominant branches. The Anglo-American branch generally takes its departure from logic and from natural science, while the Continental branch generally takes its departure from art and from the great traditional questions. However, they share this common negative feature: each side denies the view that philosophy issues from a central foundation. The book gives brief distillations of six major (...) Anglo-American figures: Carnap, James, Quine, Davidson and Kripke; as well as six major Continental figures: Husserl (the only foundationalist), Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Derrida, Gadamer, and Sallis. Medical ethics should show how an adequate description of morality is helpful in dealing with the problems that arise in the context of medical care. However none of the standard moral theories provide such a description. Further, all of these theories assume that there must be a unique correct answer to every moral question, though this answer may be that it is indifferent which of the proposed solutions one picks. The failure to recognize that there are unresolvable moral disagreements leads (...) many philosophers to think that their moral theories will enable them to determine which policies ought to be adopted. However, the correct role for moral theories is more limited: to rule out morally unacceptable policies. Moral theories almost never can settle disputes about which of two well supported health care policies ought to be adopted. (shrink)

En interrogeant Rouault à partir de Pascal, nous tenterons d'élucider, en tissant un vaste parallélisme, l'oeuvre d'un artiste par celle d'un philosophe biblique. Et, en même temps, comme par réverbération, nous aurons peut-être l'occasion d'apporter, à partir de la traduction picturale, des angles de vue nouveaux sur l'univers pascalien. Les sources enseignent sur ceux qui y puisent mais aussi, d'une certaine manière, les héritiers sur ceux dont ils proviennent. Les siècles (...) passent mais l'esprit et le coeur ménagent des rencontres dans les profondeurs du mystère. (shrink)

Le fragment de la frise de l'Érechtheion MAcr 1073, payé cent drachmes à son auteur, représente, au premier plan, un jeune homme non pas en train d'écrire sur une tablette, mais de dessiner sur le sol, activité sans doute en rapport avec les figures adjacentes : deux femmes près d'une voiture tirée par deux mules.

Toute innovation, surtout si elle est qualifiée de démocratique, ne comporte pas sa justification par sa seule énonciation. L’ expérimentalisme démocratique ne se précipite pas vers une institutionnalisation de la participation citoyenne sans avoir analysé avec précaution ces deux moments que furent le Grand débat national et la Convention citoyenne pour le climat. Une innovation retient plus particulièrement l’attention ici : la présence d’un comité légistique pour transcrire les propositions des 150 membres de la Convention. N’a-t-on pas commis un contresens (...) comme beaucoup d’entrepreneurs de la participation qui en appellent à Habermas, alors qu’il défend l’État de droit plutôt que la politique délibérative? A-t-on pris un risque en soumettant le droit à une discussion faiblement instituée? Ces deux expériences sont des révélateurs du chemin qui reste à faire pour arriver à joindre le projet liant droit et démocratie avec des publics hétérogènes et pas comme « la fiction » qu’Habermas revendique. C’est donc un exercice de modestie dans lequel les citoyens apprennent qu’ils ne sont pas les explorateurs d’une terra incognita, ni en matière climatique et ni en matière institutionnelle. (shrink)

L'utopie des posthumains est a notre porte. A nous, qui ne croyons plus aux lendemains qui chantent, elle promet que demain nous entrerons dans une nouvelle ere. Nous aurons dit adieu a notre miserable condition humaine: nous vivrons dans un monde a la mesure de notre demesure, habite par des surhommes technologiques, a la fois humains et machines, oscillant entre une realite reelle et virtuelle, immortels dans l'ignorance du temps, vivants dans l'ignorance de la vie. Depasser la condition humaine - (...) vaincre la mort et conquerir la vie eternelle - semble une quete ancestrale de l'humanite. Que vivrait ce nouvel homme dans ce rien eternel, dans ce non-temps, lui qui n'aurait rien a gagner, rien a aimer ni hair, rien a regretter, rien a pleurer, rien a esperer? Reprenant les grandes analyses sur l'immortalite, depuis le paradis perdu jusqu'a l'humanite augmentee, Bernard Edelman s'interroge sur ce qui donne sens a la vie. (shrink)

Historical aspects of the issue are also broached. Intuitions relative to self-organization can be found in the works of such key Western philosophical figures as Aristotle, Leibniz and Kant. Interacting with more recent authors and cybernetics, self-organization represents a notion in keeping with the modern world’s discovery of radical complexity. The themes of teleology and emergence are analyzed by philosophers of sciences with regards to the issues of modelization and scientific explanation. (publisher, edited).

In the contemporary ethical discourse, we constantly take recourse to human rights and dignity, and frequently rights are said to be founded on dignity. However, when we examine this concept, we begin to doubt that this recourse is adequate, because dignity manifests two features that are difficult to reconcile with liberal values on which our societies are established. First, and the appearances notwithstanding, dignity is not a universalist concept; and second, it possesses a perfectionist side.
