The scholastic philosopher is interested in definition for a different reason than the lexicographer and linguist. The philosopher is trying to learn things. Fe defines, after investigating reality, in an attempt to describe reality clearly and to sum up some aspect of his understanding of reality. Hence, we find our scholastic philosophers adopting as a main feature of their method this insistence on defining, on precise and detailed explanation of their definitions, and on proving that their definitions da correctly express (...) what a nature or activity is. A dictionary of the language of scholastic philosophy fitted to the needs of beginners and of undergraduate students of the subject is not available in English. (shrink)

This article examines Nietzsche’s moral psychology by focusing on his most important contribution to that form of inquiry, On the Genealogy of Morality. The will to power, understood as a self-standing desire for effective agency, emerges as a central concept. The Genealogy is an exploration of what happens to this desire under circumstances in which its satisfaction is severely restricted. In particular, phenomena playing a role in the development of morality such as ressentiment and self-denial are best understood as expressions (...) of the “will to power of the weak.” And the moral outlook that grows out of them may be understood as a strategy to allow even the “weakest” a “feeling of power.” This moral outlook proves to be a kind of psychopathology insofar as it is an expression of the will to power that undermines the very conditions of its pursuit, satisfaction, and enjoyment—a “will to nothingness.”. In this article, I examine Nietzsche's famous claim that moralities are a “sign-language” or “symptomatology” of the affective states of moral agents. I sketch out the sentimentalist interpretation of this claim, which has become prevalent in the scholarly literature, and argue that it cannot be correct. The relation it posits between values and the affects that explain them displays certain distinctive characteristics—noncontingency, expressive transparency, and specificity—which the relation between affects and values Nietzsche envisages in the examples that illustrate his claim (...) ostensibly lacks. I argue that the relation between affects and values is better understood as functional, rather than expressive: he explains moral judgments by showing how they serve certain emotional needs of the agent. Thus, Nietzsche's claim is better understood as articulating a kind of sentimental pragmatism. I conclude with some brief thoughts on the relation between this pragmatism and sentimentalism. D’un point de vue patrimonial, le célèbre texte des Éléments de géométrie de Clairaut, publié la première fois en 1741, est traditionnellement considéré comme le début d’une riche histoire plutôt que son aboutissement, en raison notamment du succès considérable qu’il a eu dès sa parution et de la manière dont Clairaut en a défendu le projet, en rupture apparente avec le modèle euclidien. Nous proposons ici une image un peu différente qui s’appuie sur la nature très particulière de la production (...) géométrique foisonnante dans laquelle le traité de Clairaut s’insère et doit être compris. Nous présentons tout d’abord le côté paradoxal de l’ouvrage, qui revendique non seulement une grande originalité mais aussi une non moins grande conformité au genre des « éléments » de géométrie spéculative. Nous indiquons ensuite cinq raisons majeures qui montrent que le texte était en effet largement conforme aux attendus de l’époque, y compris dans sa revendication d’accessibilité et de rupture vis-à-vis du modèle euclidien. Nous dégageons deux originalités de l’ouvrage : le fait de confondre les caractéristiques des géométries spéculatives et pratiques dans un seul et même ouvrage ; et le fait d’écrire un ouvrage de géométrie suivant un « ordre analytique », mais sans algèbre. Cette étude envisage les notions de sujet, d’individu et de personne dans une perspective d’anthropologie historique. La période considérée va de la disparition de l’Empire romain d’Occident à la mutation féodale, et son analyse est centrée sur la convergence de la culture savante – c’est-à-dire chrétienne – avec ce que nous pouvons savoir de la culture populaire à propos des trois notions précitées. Inaugurée par saint Augustin dans ses Confessions, l’émergence de la notion de personne coïncide avec l’oblitération du sujet (...) dans le De Trinitate de l’évêque d’Hippone. Cette conception rejoint celle du corps grotesque qui traverse la culture populaire de cette époque. Quant à l’individu, il n’apparaît durant toute la période considérée que sous la forme de l’individu particulier dans le cadre d’une individualité de types, et non sous celle de l’individu singulier propre à notre modernité. Distributive justice, like every other value, is not suspended in mid-air: its implementation depends on certain conditions, the well-known ‹circumstances of justice›. In this paper, I attempt to spell them out, first for justice proper , then for international justice. Those circumstances relate to the conceptual parts of justice and are four in number: scarcity, needs and merit, social cooperation, and authority of distribution. As far as international justice is concerned, there is a problem with the last circumstance: as yet (...) no international authority of distribution exists. This does not, however, mean that international justice is impossible or undesirable; only that we have the task to create such an authority. (shrink)

Tekst ten jest zapisem wykładu wygłoszonego przez Williamsa w Królewskim Instytucie Filozofii 23 lutego 2000 r., na trzy lata przed śmiercią. Jest on swoistym testamentem filozoficznym autora Ethics and the Limits of Philosophy, w którym przedstawia swoją wizję filozofiijako dziedziny humanistycznej. Zdaniem Williamsa istnieją poważne racje uzasadniające odrzucenie radykalnych stanowisk metafilozoficznych, takich jak scjentyzm, relatywizm czy pragmatyzm. Zwolennicy tych stanowisk zapoznają istotne różnice między filozofią i nauką, a przez to nie potrafią sformułować takiego obrazu świata, który umożliwiłby nam sensowne rozumienie (...) nas samych i naszych różnorodnych aktywności intelektualnych i praktycznych. Podstawowym błędem jest tutaj zignorowanie faktu, że nauka dysponuje teorią błędu, pozwalającą zinterpretować jej rozwój jako dokonujący się za pośrednictwem racji poznawczych, podczas gdy koncepcje filozoficzne podlegają rozmaitym pozapoznawczym uwarunkowaniom, zwłaszcza determinacji poprzez historię i kulturę. Według Williamsa nie jest to jednak powód do odrzucenia filozofii. Jakkolwiek nauka góruje nad filozofią w aspekcie poznawczym, to nie jest ona w stanie dostarczyć nam bogatego samorozumienia, co może i powinno stać się celem filozofii, jeżeli tylko odrzucimy próby upodobnienia jej do nauki i skupimy się na najważniejszych faktach dotyczących istot ludzkich. Niejesteśmy bowiem czysto racjonalnymi inteligencjami, lecz raczej istotami z krwi i kości, ukształtowanymi przez naszą biologię, psychologię, historię i kulturę, istotami mającymi wiele złożonych potrzeb, których nie da się zredukować do potrzeb czysto poznawczych. In this essay, I advance an argument against the expansion and acceptance of postmodern metaphysical antirealist ideologies in the development of nursing theory in North America. I suggest mystical theoretical explanations of care, the rejection of empirical epistemology, and a return to divinity in nursing represent an intellectual dead end, as these ideas do little to help resolve real‐world health issues and also negate the need for the academic discrimination of bad ideas. I examine some of the philosophical foundations of (...) nursing theory and deconstruct some of the more preternatural theories that have become established as the dominant conventional wisdom in the academy. It is argued that this can be characterized as a form of self‐deception, and overall has had a negative impact on advancement of the nursing profession and public health care. Reasons behind the widespread acceptance of these irrational theoretical stances in nursing and the ongoing support for mystical therapeutic interventions are explored. (shrink)

Alors qu’un nombre important de situations relevant d’une souffrance psychique du lien est régulièrement rapporté par les professionnels de la protection de l’enfance, peu d’études se sont penchées sur le processus psychique inconscient nécessairement à l’œuvre pour permettre l’accueil et l’intégration, même provisoire, dans une famille d’un enfant qui initialement n’en fait pas partie. Les auteurs de cet article cherchent à étudier la dynamique de fonctionnement psychique sous-jacent à l’accueil de l’enfant, en appui sur les conceptualisations théoriques psychanalytiques groupales et (...) psychanalytiques familiales.
