Au Pairs, Nannies and Babysitters: Paid Care as a Temporary Life Course Experience in Slovakia and in the UK.Zuzana Sekeráková Búriková - 2019 - Feminist Review 122 (1):80-94.
This article argues that intersectional analyses of care work also need to include a temporal aspect. Drawing on ethnographic research on Slovak au pairs working in the UK and on interviews with both providers and employers of paid childcare in Slovakia, I examine how the temporariness of care work is created within both migrant and non-migrant settings. In particular, I demonstrate that both employers and providers conceptualise paid childcare as a temporary period in their lives and show the consequences of (...)

Rituals, ghosts and glorified babysitters: A narrative analysis of stories nurses shared about working the night shift.Margaret McAllister, Colleen Ryan, Tracey Simes, Sue Bond, Abigail Ford & Donna Lee Brien - 2021 - Nursing Inquiry 28 (1):e12372.
Working the night shift can be fraught and experienced as demanding and, yet, is often dismissed as babysitting. Few researchers have explored the social and cultural meanings of night nursing, including storytelling rituals. In 2019, a narrative study was undertaken. The aim was to explore the stories recalled by nurses about working night shifts. Thirteen Australian nurses participated. Data were gathered using the Biographical Narrative Interview Method, and narrative analysis produced forty stories and three themes: strange and challenging experiences; colleagues (...)

Maturity of children to consent to medical research: the babysitter test.G. Koren, D. B. Carmeli, Y. S. Carmeli & R. Haslam - 1993 - Journal of Medical Ethics 19 (3):142-147.
The age of maturity of children to consent for medical research is under debate, as different authorities regard the capacity of young teenagers as either satisfactory or not to grant consent without parental participation in the process. The present paper contrasts the generally accepted guideline for ethics in paediatric research in Canada with what the same children are allowed and expected to be able to do as babysitters. This comparison reveals deep incongruences in the way the maturity of the same (...)

The literary mind.Mark Turner - 1996 - New York: Oxford University Press.
We usually consider literary thinking to be peripheral and dispensable, an activity for specialists: poets, prophets, lunatics, and babysitters. Certainly we do not think it is the basis of the mind. We think of stories and parables from Aesop's Fables or The Thousand and One Nights, for example, as exotic tales set in strange lands, with spectacular images, talking animals, and fantastic plots--wonderful entertainments, often insightful, but well removed from logic and science, and entirely foreign to the world of everyday (...)

Can communication with social robots influence how children develop empathy? Best-evidence synthesis.Ekaterina Pashevich - 2022 - AI and Society 37 (2):579-589.
Social robots are gradually entering children’s lives in a period when children learn about social relationships and exercise prosocial behaviors with parents, peers, and teachers. Designed for long-term emotional engagement and to take the roles of friends, teachers, and babysitters, such robots have the potential to influence how children develop empathy. This article presents a review of the literature in the fields of human–robot interaction, psychology, neuropsychology, and roboethics, discussing the potential impact of communication with social robots on children’s social (...)

The touch-screen generation: Trends in Dutch parents’ perceptions of young children’s media use from 2012–2018.Peter Nikken - 2022 - Communications 47 (2):286-306.
Based on a time-lag model, this study tested for changes in young children’s home access and use of digital media in the 2012–2018 period as well as in their parents’ views on such media. What it found was that in only a few years the digital devices available to children have become more mobile, more accessible, and more numerous in these children’s bedrooms, especially in single-parent households. Also, on average children have strongly increased their daily media use—up to 102 minutes. (...)

    Derrida's language-games.Newton Garver - 1991 - Topoi 10 (2):187-198.
In previous essays (1973, 1975, 1977) I have praised Derrida's contributions to philosophical dialogue and also insisted on their limitations. The considerations raised in this present essay do not lead me to a position that is less ambivalent. Philosophy is a particular language-game. Like any other, it has its constitutive rules; or, perhaps better: its practice has certain distinctive features by means of which we recognize philosophizing and distinguish it from other linguistic activities. None of this can be set down (...)
