It is commonly argued that Hans-Georg Gadamer’s hermeneutics rests upon a criticism of the method of natural sciences that, by establishing a monopoly of what might be deemed as true knowledge, would exclude different forms of non-scientific experiences of truth. Thus, the article aims first at examining this assumption based on an analysis of his hermeneutic dialectics and ontology of language, which he develops in the third part of Truth and Method. This analysis reveals that his criticism of scientific method (...) rests upon the idea that the being is related to the happening of meaning and of human beings as individuals whose understanding of the world is questioned and caused by such happening. These ontological approaches make possible to characterize what might be thetrue method of thinking and access to truth. Secondly, the article aims at identifying three methodologicalprinciples that would guide a genuine exercise of hermeneutic thinking: a) The principle of determining the topos of understanding, which demands to reveal the relations of meaning that connect us to what we desire to understand; b) Principle of correction, which makes possible that understanding continuously “improves” both our interpretations and self-descriptions that actors provide of their own actions; and c) Principle of sensitivity towards happening, which demands to carefully listen to every possible relation of meaning that shape phenomena, as well as to the variations and mutations of meaning they experience. The Reliquary of the Manger in the Church of São Roque in Lisbon was created in the early seventeenth century to house supposed fragments of the crib in Bethlehem, given to the Jesuits in Lisbon by Pope Clement VIII. The gilded and silvered bronze reliquary was paid for in part by a donation of c. 1615 from Donna Maria Rolim de Moura, wife of Luís da Gama, a great-grandson of Vasco da Gama. The size of the donation—specifically, the (...) coin involved--has been variously reported and this investigation argues for a correct value, as well as presenting its equivalence in modern currency. The argument is backed up by the discovery in Lisbon of an early seventeenth-century inventory which records the donation. (shrink)

La industria alimentaria y las administraciones públicas realizan grandes esfuerzos para mejorar el mantenimiento de las condiciones higiénicas y evitar la contaminación de alimentos. Pese a estos esfuerzos siguen produciéndose un gran numero de procesos patológicos relacionados con los alimentos. Las buenas prácticas higiénicas pueden reducir el nivel de contaminación, pero algunos microorganismos patógenos resulta imposible eliminarlos, especialmente de aquellos alimentos que se comercializan crudos y con procesado mínimo. La irradiación se presenta como un método de descontaminación posible para este (...) grupo de alimentos, especialmente válido como método de descontaminación final. Dosis de irradiación inferiores a 10 kGy (dependiendo del alimento y condiciones) son efectivas para eliminar posibles patógenos no esporulados, inactivar parásitos, tratar especias, condimentos y otros ingredientes secos, fruta fresca y productos de cuarta gama (vegetales frescos, limpios y envasados, listos para consumo). Respecto a la seguridad de los alimentos irradiados, está plenamente demostrado que no provoca la aparición de compuestos especiales y provoca una ligera reducción en el contenido de algunas vitaminas, que es equiparable a la producida por otros tratamientos tecnológicos. Se ha visto también que microorganismos que han sido sometidos a radiaciones y han sobrevivido a ellas se muestran más sensibles a las condiciones ambientales de estrés que aquellos que nunca han sido irradiados. Pese a que los organismos internacionales FAO y OMS presentan la irradiación como un método seguro, eficaz, limpio con el medio ambiente y energéticamente eficiente, los consumidores siguen estando desinformados y mostrándose reticentes a su utilización. En la actualidad se están llevando a cabo muchos sondeos, de los que se deriva que una correcta in formación al consumidor es el único método válido para conseguir la aceptación de esta tecnología. Las investigaciones actuales en este sector se centran en la optimización de su aplicación a alimentos concretos y en los posibles efectos sobre los materiales de envasado. Por lo que respecta a la aplicación industrial, se tiende a crear centros de tratamiento donde diferentes productores llevan sus materias a tratar. Se espera que esta tecnología presente una fuerte tendencia creciente en los próximos años. (shrink)

Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to provide a constructivist account of the "self as subject" that avoids the need for any metaphysical assumptions. Findings: The thesis developed in this paper is that the human "psychological individual," "self" or "subject" is an emergent within the nexus of human social interaction. With respect to psychological and social wholes (composites) there is no distinction between the form of the elements and the form of the composites they constitute i.e., all elements have (...) the form of composites. Further, recursively, composites may serve as elements within higher order composites. Implications for a rational theory of ethics are discussed. Original Value: The thesis contributes in a fundamental way to the research programme of radical constructivism by demonstrating that metaphysical assumptions about the nature of the "subject" are not an a priori necessity. Although the thesis in itself is not original, the paper offers a useful synthesis of ideas from a number of key thinkers in the disciplines of cybernetics, biology, psychology and philosophy. The Transparent Intensional Logic explicates the meaning of a linguistic expression as a construction. The construction is a hyperintensional entity. It is characterised as instructions for a „calculation“ of a concrete value. In the terminology of Pavel Tichy a linguistic expression denotes its meaning , which construes the signification of the expression. If the signification is an intension, we can call it a reference of the expression. In several semantic conceptions the question of the denotation and of the reference are (...) not treated equally. The terminological chaos can be resolved in a specific way thanks to „fine-grained“ character of the logical analysis offered by TIL. (shrink)
