We present a list of open questions in reverse mathematics, including some relevant background information for each question. We also mention some of the areas of reverse mathematics that are starting to be developed and where interesting open question may be found.

The paper presents an inquiry into the question regarding the compatibility of Bohmian mechanics, intended as a non-local theory of moving point-like particles, with background independence. This issue is worth being investigated because, if the Bohmian framework has to be of some help in developing new physics, it has to be compatible with the most well-established traits of modern physics, background independence being one of such traits. The paper highlights the fact that the notion of background independence in the context (...) of spacetime physics is slippery and interpretation-laden. It is then suggested that the best-matching framework developed by Julian Barbour might provide a robust enough meaning of background independence. The structure of Bohmian dynamics is evaluated against this framework, reaching some intermediate results that speak in favor of the fact that Bohmian mechanics can be made background independent. This article serves as an introduction to the collection of papers in this monographic issue on "What the European tradition can teach about Corporate Social Responsibility" and presents the rationale and the main hypotheses of the project. We maintain that corporate social responsibility (CSR) is an ethical concept, that the demands for socially responsible actions have been around since before the Industrial Revolution and that companies have responded to them, especially in Europe, and that the content of CSR has evolved (...) over time, depending on historical, cultural, political, and socio-economic drivers and particular conditions in different countries and also at different points in time. Therefore, there is not — and probably cannot be — a unique, precise definition of CSR: one global standard for CSR is unlikely. (shrink)

Charity, as a social construct, is considered in various interpretative contexts, in a subjectively manner, social progress. The meta-narration about charity as Christian duty, by passing through the secular interpretive and atomizer context of postmodernity, becomes a narrative about social responsibility and equity in ethical dimension, and is translated into restorative community practices in social action plan. We will pursue the constructive interpretive contexts that generated the idea of social policies and social work practice as a contemporary deconstruction of charity. (...) The thesis of the article is that the process of deconstruction of charity, as a religious value which regulates in a Christian manner the reference to the other, is the foundation of restorative social policies and professionalized social work as a social action. We will analyze the deconstruction of Christian idea of charity from two perspectives, namely the secularization of charitable practices and constructive foundation of a particular meta-story of our times which we call secular society and/or knowledge society. Water values serve as an entry point into the intricacies of public policies and management approaches. Values are contingent assessments that emerge out of socio-ecological relations and reflect particular demands, legacies and opportunities. The concept of value positionality is introduced as the synthesis of multiple expressions of worthiness cherished by a social group. Positionality is a metaphor that connects the phenomenological understanding of water value with the politics of everyday life and the broader politico-institutional framework. It entails a cluster of (...) meanings expressed through territorialised interactions across time, locations and scales. Positionalities converge or depart according to value praxis, that is, the clash of competing valuation approaches seeking legitimisation. (shrink)

O que pode ser, segundo Nietzsche, uma receita para o sofredor livrar-se do fardo de seu sofrimento, mas também um ato heroico de afirmação da vida. Assim, tanto a decisão de tocar - ou não - nas águas do Lete quanto os motivos para fazê-lo envolve a ambiguidade que é característica do termo “esquecimento” nos escritos do filósofo. Uma característica (...) do conceito que diz respeito ao diálogo constante do filósofo com suas fontes, com as nascentes do conceito, e aos diferentes usos que faz dele, os meandros que produz. Dois campos de investigação, o da origem e o da forma, que têm em comum a possibilidade de interpretação, conforme veremos, a partir das ideias de assimilação e digestão.: According to Greek mythology, whoever drinks or touches the waters of Lethe, a river of Hades, forgets his previous existence. What can be, according to Nietzsche, a recipe for the sufferer to get rid of the burden of his suffering, but also a heroic act of affirmation of life. Thus, both the decision to touch - or not - the waters of Lethe and the reasons for doing so involve the ambiguity that is characteristic of the term “forgetfulness” in the philosopher’s writings. A characteristic of the concept that concerns the philosopher’s constant dialogue with his sources, with the nascent of the concept, and the different uses he makes of it, the meanders he produces. Two fields of investigation, that of origin and that of form, have in common the possibility of interpretation, as we will see, from the ideas of assimilation and digestion. (shrink)

A statement of hyperarithmetic analysis is a sentence of second order arithmetic S such that for every Y⊆ω, the minimum ω-model containing Y of RCA0 + S is HYP, the ω-model consisting of the sets hyperarithmetic in Y. We provide an example of a mathematical theorem which is a statement of hyperarithmetic analysis. This statement, that we call INDEC, is due to Jullien [13]. To the author's knowledge, no other already published, purely mathematical statement has been found with this property (...) until now. We also prove that, over RCA0, INDEC is implied by [Formula: see text] and implies ACA0, but of course, neither ACA0, nor ACA 0+ imply it. We introduce five other statements of hyperarithmetic analysis and study the relations among them. Four of them are related to finitely-terminating games. The fifth one, related to iterations of the Turing jump, is strictly weaker than all the other statements that we study in this paper, as we prove using Steel's method of forcing with tagged trees. This article analyzes a deliberative forum on nanotechnologies, organized in Portugal within the scope of the research project DEEPEN—Deepening Ethical Engagement and Participation in Emerging Nanotechnologies. This event included scientists, science communicators and members of the “lay public”, and resulted in a position document which summarizes collective aspirations and concerns related to nano. Drawing upon our previous experience with focus groups on nanotechnologies—characterized by methodological innovations that aimed at suspending epistemological inequalities between participants—this paper delves into the performativity of the (...) deliberative event, exploring some of the tensions and power/knowledge asymmetries generated by the forum. Recognizing that the design of participatory assemblages matters, we reflect on our role as facilitators and explore the difficulties in organizing exercises of upstream engagement with emerging technologies. La crisis sanitaria mundial ha propiciado un fecundo debate iusfilosófico en lo referente a la protección de los derechos humanos. El nuevo escenario exige respuestas nuevas por parte de la filosofía del derecho. En este trabajo se somete a crítica la teoría del garantismo constitucional de Luigi Ferrajoli, cuestionándose su idoneidad como marco de referencia para afrontar los mencionados desafíos. La crítica se centra en la concepción ferrajoliana de la democracia y en su proyección cosmopolita. This paper will show that attempts to control the body in late capitalism are replete with symbolic violence. Filipinos have not succeeded in confining the body, thereby validating Foucault's (1980) critique of the repressive hypothesis. Ordinary narratives about the body in the Philippines exist not in the context of a settled template of silenced debates and repressed desires, but in the explosion of discourse and contestations, and of an intricate articulation between popular knowledge and truth on one hand, and the (...) ordinary and everyday experience of pleasure and desire on the other. Both claim the possibility of the working class aware of his actual situation, to have critical knowledge of the mechanisms of the dominant mode of production, to carry out its historic mission. An ethics review and a revolutionary education are fundamental in the process of overcoming the capitalist moral education and that reduce an individual human being mutilated, mercantile, not allowing the full development of their creative abilities and the free development of all individuals. El rápido desarrollo de las biotecnologías y el enorme potencial que encierran han hecho albergar la esperanza de la pronta aplicación de algunos avances técnicos al mejoramiento genético de los seres humanos. Ello ha propiciado la elaboración de numerosos análisis filosóficos centrados en cuestiones éticas y en las previsibles consecuencias, tanto positivas como negativas, de dicha aplicación. Una lectura de esta cuestión a través de la filosofía de la técnica de Ortega y Gasset nos permite apreciar, sin embargo, la importancia (...) de dos aspectos que han sido menos atendidos. Por un lado, es necesario realizar un análisis en profundidad de los motivos que llevan a desear la radical transformación del ser humano mediante la tecnología y de los intereses que hay detrás de ellos. Por otro lado, es injusta la identificación de la crítica al mejoramiento radical que trate de establecer ciertos límites con una posición bioconservadora y tecnofóbica que rechaza cualquier tipo de mejoramiento genético.
