This paper presents the design and validation process of a set of instruments to evaluate the impact of an informal learning initiative to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics vocations in students, their families, and teachers. The proposed set of instruments, beyond assessing the satisfaction of the public involved, allow collecting data to evaluate the impact in terms of changes in the consideration of the role of women in STEM areas and STEM vocations. The procedure followed to develop the set (...) of instruments consisted of two phases. In the first phase, a preliminary version of the questionnaires was designed based on the objectives of the Girls4STEM initiative, an inclusive project promoting STEM vocations between 6 and 18 years old boys and girls. Five specific questionnaires were designed, one for the families, two for the students and two for the teachers. A refined version of each questionnaire was obtained with evidence of content validity after undergoing an expert judgment process. The second phase was the refinement of the instruments, to ascertain the evidence of reliability and validity so that a final version was derived. In the paper, a high-quality set of good practices focused on promoting diversity and gender equality in the STEM sector are presented from a Higher Education Institution perspective, the University of Valencia. The main contribution of this work is the achievement of a set of instruments, rigorously designed for the evaluation of the implementation and effectiveness of a STEM promoting program, with sufficient validity evidence. A relationship that can be positive since it allows dialogue, fraternity, affection and care or negative, because it can generate overprotection, destruction and even violence. In this sense, in this work we will delve into the understanding of precisely what is different. For this, we will focus on the case of rare diseases and the mechanisms to minimize the exclusion processes suffered by this group of people, the (...) relationship with medical professionals and aspects related to the world of work, among others. A series of aspects that, due to the low prevalence of these diseases, are little studied so that progress in the knowledge of these diseases is greatly reduced. All this entails serious consequences for the people affected, finding themselves unprotected in areas such as social and labor. (shrink)

De acuerdo con la ley israelí los hijos de trabajadores extranjerossin visa de trabajo no gozan de estatus civil, con todo lo queesto implica. A principio de los 2000, el Gobierno israelí amenazó condeportar a todos los trabajadores sin visa de trabajo y a sus familias.Esta decisión llevó a la sociedad civil israelí y a las ONG a demandarque el gobierno israelí otorgara estatus civil a los hijos de trabajadoresextranjeros. Después de una ardua lucha el Gobierno decidió en el 2006y (...) 2010 de forma excepcional otorgar estatus civil a los hijos de trabajadoresextranjeros y a sus familias, alrededor de 500 niños y jóvenes deorigen latinoamericano. Tras esta decisión, el presente estudio exploracómo se han construido y reconstruido las experiencias de vida de estosniños desde el inicio de su nuevo estatus civil. La metodología combinamétodos de investigación cualitativos y cuantitativos. Según loshallazgos, estos niños revelan un alto grado de pertenencia a la sociedadisraelí y se definen a sí mismos como israelíes. Así, todos sabemos qué es una comida "pantagruélica" o recordamos la ceremonia del té en casa del sombrerero loco de Alicia y podemos identificar al personaje glotón y distinguirlo del sibarita por ejemplo. Alrededor de una buena mesa se pueden fraguar conspiraciones y motines.

Se evaluó la autorregulación en estudiantes de nuevo ingreso en una licenciatura en psicología en línea. Se adaptó y aplicó el Inventario de Estilos de Aprendizaje y Orientación Motivacional de Castañeda y Ortega a una muestra de 204 estudiantes encontrando que la edad se relaciona con la eficacia percibida, la aprobación externa y el manejo de materiales de estudio. Escribir sobre Gloria Fuertes (1918-1998) es hacerlo de la infancia de un buen grupo de españoles quienes recordamos a esta poeta con alegría y agradecimiento porque ella fue la primera en abrirnos las puertas a la literatura y a la alegría de vivir. No obstante, con ella se cometió una injusticia: se la arrinconó de los círculos más intelectuales, más de elite por considerarla poca cosa, porque se le achacaba un descuido en el estilo, una facilidad en las rimas, una claridad que, para algunos, no debe tener la poesía. Escribir acerca de la muerte en la literatura trata de responder a una de las preguntas que, desde siempre, se ha hecho el hombre de cualquier cultura, época o creencia. Vida y muerte son las dos caras de la misma moneda y no podemos ignorar que todo lo que nace acaba pereciendo. El Oráculo en La llamada de los muertos, de Laura Gallego, nos recuerda que la vida por sí misma no es nada, si no va acompañada por la muerte, (...) su compañera: "No comprendes que cada cosa tiene su tiempo y su edad, y que si bien la vida es algo maravilloso, también la muerte es necesaria para toda criatura" (pág. 31). En El coleccionista de relojes extraordinarios es la propia muerte quien le da este consejo a Jonathan Hadley: "Limítate a vivir, eses es tu trabajo. Cuando llegue tu hora, yo vendré a buscarte. La salud física es fundamental, por supuesto, pero no podemos olvidar la salud afectiva y la salud emocional que permite crear un vínculo entre los bebés y sus cuidadores. The theme surrounding scientific discoveries is quite neglected in and about the sciences, especially in terms of historical and epistemological understanding. Discoveries are often treated as simple information about dates, places, and people. This work presents discussions centered on historical episodes related to chemical elements and the Periodic Law, based on reflections by Thomas Kuhn and Norwood Hanson, aiming to highlight and contextualize specific scientific discoveries' conceptual and epistemological structure. With that in mind, issues related to the inseparability of the (...) contexts of discovery and justification are recovered, along with the complex intrinsic structures of the genesis of scientific knowledge and distinct types and categories of scientific discoveries. El objetivo de este trabajo fue demostrar la utilidad de los problemas de reparto para el aprendizaje de las fracciones. El enfoque de la investigación fue cuasi-experimental; los instrumentos utilizados fueron un cuestionario y una entrevista. Los resultados de la investigación demostraron que los problemas de reparto son una estrategia útil para mejorar el aprendizaje de las fracciones. Introducción: El consentimiento informado es un procedimiento que brinda oportunidad a los pacientes de disponer de información y participar en la toma de decisiones médicas. Sin embargo, existe el criterio de que el nivel de entendimiento de la información aportada por los facultativos al paciente, sus familiares o ambos, es bajo y además, muchos médicos lo consideran como una herramienta de trabajo secundaria o que no es necesario realizarla con inmediatez. Objetivo: Evaluar la percepción y experiencia del personal sanitario de (...) la unidad de terapia polivalente del Hospital Docente Clínico Quirúrgico "Joaquín Albarrán" acerca del consentimiento informado. Método: Estudio descriptivo realizado en la unidad de terapia polivalente del Hospital "Joaquín Albarrán" de enero a marzo del 2013. Se aplicó una encuesta a 67 trabajadores que accedieron voluntariamente a responderla. Resultados: El 60 % de los encuestados tenía menos de dos años de trabajo en la unidad y solo el 45 %, conocimientos básicos de ética médica. Únicamente el 50 % de los interrogados consideró que este procedimiento puede mejorar la relación médico-paciente. Conclusiones: Es necesario incrementar el conocimiento sobre la utilidad del consentimiento informado entre los trabajadores de la unidad para aprovechar al máximo sus beneficios. Introduction: Informed consent is a procedure that offers full opportunity for patients to have access to information and participate in medical decision-makings. However, it is believed that the information given by the doctors are not fully understood by the patients, their families or both, and besides that many doctors consider it as a second tool or something that doesn't have to be done right away. Objective: Evaluate the perception and experience of the health staff of the polyvalent unit of the surgical clinical teaching hospital Joaquin Albarrán about informed consent. Method: Descriptive study carried out in the polyvalent unit of Joaquin Albarrán Hospital from January to march 2013. A survey was given to 67 workers who voluntarily agreed to answer it. Results: The 60% of the participants had been working in the unit for less than 2 years and only 45% of them had basic knowledge of medical ethics. Only 50% of the participants considered that this procedure could help to improve doctor-patient relationship. Conclusions: It is necessary to increase the knowledge of the usefulness of the informed consent among the workers of the unit to have full profit from it. (shrink)

What are networked organizations? The focus of discussions of the networked organization has been on the boundary-spanning nature of these new organizational structures. Yet, the role of the group in these networked organizations has remained unclear. Furthermore, little is known about how computer-mediated communication is used to bridge group and organizational boundaries. In particular, the role of new media in the context of existing communication patterns has received little attention. We examine how employees at a high-tech company, referred to as (...) KME, communicate with members of the work group, other colleagues in the organization, and colleagues outside the organization to better understand their boundary-spanning communications. (shrink)

Human telomerase progressively emerged as a multifaceted ribonucleoprotein complex with additional functions beyond telomeric repeat synthesis. Both the hTERT catalytic subunit and the hTR long non‐coding RNA (lncRNA) subunit are engaged in highly regulated cellular pathways that, together, contribute to cell fitness and protection against apoptosis. We recently described a new role for hTR in regulating the abundance of replication protein A at telomeres, adding to the growing repertoire of hTR’s functions. Here, we focus on the non‐canonical roles of hTR (...) and discuss them in the context of the structural elements of the lncRNA. We propose that some functions of hTR may compete amongst each other through distinct interactions with its partners, proteins or mRNAs. We postulate that hTR’s non‐canonical functions may be highly relevant in the context of normal somatic cells that naturally silence hTERT gene, while keeping hTR expression. (shrink)

El presente libro es un estudio de la teoría kantiana del conocimiento centrado muy especialmente en el papel de la reflexión en la producción de conocimiento. A lo largo de este trabajo se ha pretendido poner en el centro de la teoría kantiana de la experiencia al concepto de reflexión, que ha sido a menudo dejado al margen de los procesos estrictamente cognitivos. De este modo, se ofrece una lectura comprensiva de Kant de acuerdo con la cual se pueden ver (...) los procesos de mediación categorial dentro del marco reflexivo que los hace fértiles. Por ello mismo, y desde estos presupuestos, se estudia en este trabajo con especial énfasis el concepto kantiano de hipótesis y trata de mostrar como en dicho proceso las estructuras categoriales, junto con elementos de jurisprudencia empírica, hacen posible el genuino conocimiento. Auf diese Weise wird eine umfassende Lesart Kants angestrebt, bei der die Prozesse der kategorialen Vermittlung in dem reflexiven Rahmen gesehen werden können, der sie fruchtbar macht. This book argues that ethical business behavior can be enhanced by taking fuller account of human nature, particularly with respect to the need for creating relatively small communities within the corporation. Timothy Fort discusses this premise in relation to the three predominant theories of business ethics--stakeholder, virtue, and contract. Drawing heavily from philosophy, he analyzes traditional business ethics and legal theory. Objectives: This study attempts to analyse the ethical dilemmas arising from the microallocation of scarce health care resources, in terms of deontology and utilitarianism.Methods: A group of 395 people were interviewed in the region of Diadema, greater San Paulo, Brazil, while visiting patients in the only state hospital in town. Each interviewee was given a list of eight simulated emergencies . In each of the eight cases the interviewee had to choose which of the two patients described, both of whom (...) suffered from exactly the same problem, should receive the only hospital bed currently available. The differences between the hypothetical patients were as follows: age, gender, family dependency, and lifestyle. Each interviewee was asked to justify one of their responses. These responses were then analysed.Results: The results pointed to the co-existence of deontological and utilitarian orientations among the people interviewed. A tendency to give priority to the destitute was revealed throughout the research, contradicting the idea that society, valuing only productive people, wishes only such people to receive the most resources, thus maximising the benefits to be gained from resources. The results showed that people’s disapproval of the alcoholic was stronger than that of the nicotine abuser. (shrink)

This research investigates the degree to which there are differences in the moral reasoning ability of business top, middle, and first-line managers in selected industries. This study considered the influence of three independent variables: reported organizational ethical climate, locus of control, and selected demographic and institutional variables on managers reasoning ability. This researcher relies on Kohlberg's theory of moral development, Victor and Cullen's ethical work climate theory, and Rotter's theory of internal-external locus of control. A short form of Rest's DIT (...) instrument measured the moral reasoning abilities of the participants. Selected demographic and institutional variables were also measured. A survey questionnaire was sent to 400 managerial and executive level employees at a random sample of Fortune 500 firms throughout the United States: Dun & Bradstreet provided the researcher with a proportional stratified random sample of these 400 managerial and executive level employees at a variety of organizations. Interestingly, women exhibited insignificant higher mean I-E scores and higher mean "P" score than men. Statistically significant relationship between age and perceived organizational ethical climate types and between management levels and organizational ethical climate were also found. (shrink)

“For what tomorrow will be, no one knows,” writes Victor Hugo. This dialogue, proposed to Jacques Derrida by the historian Elisabeth Roudinesco, brings together two longtime friends who share a common history and an intellectual heritage. While their perspectives are often different, they have many common reference points: psychoanalysis, above all, but also the authors and works that have come to be known outside France as “post-structuralist.” Beginning with a revealing glance back at the French intellectual scene over the past (...) forty years, Derrida and Roudinesco go on to address a number of major social and political issues. Their extraordinarily wide-ranging discussion covers topics such as immigration, hospitality, gender equality, and “political correctness”; the disordering of the traditional family, same-sex unions, and reproductive technologies; the freedom of the “subject” over and against “scientism”; violence against animals; the haunting specter of communism and revolution; the present and future of anti-Semitism and the hazardous politics of criticizing the state of Israel; the principled abolition of the death penalty; and, to conclude, a chapter “in praise of psychoanalysis.” These exchanges not only help to situate Derrida's thought within the milieu out of which it grew, they also show more clearly than ever how this thought, impelled by a deep concern for justice, can be brought to bear on the social and political issues of our day. O artigo visa estabelecer uma interpretação das ideias apresentadas por Descartes em seu Compendium Musicae como expressivas da transição entre os períodos renascentista e barroco na música. Parte-se de uma análise comparativa da música desses dois períodos, assim como de algumas ideias filosóficas e científicas que circundaram a transição entre eles, e busca-se identificar ideias vinculadas a ambos no Compendium. De acordo com os resultados dessa análise, argumenta-se que, se do ponto de vista da teoria e da prática musical, a (...) obra se encontra ainda vinculada ao estilo renascentista, no que diz respeito ao fundo filosófico e científico, ela apresenta ideias comumente associadas ao Barroco.
