Although the knowledge about biological systems has advanced exponentially in recent decades, it is surprising to realize that the very definition of Life keeps presenting theoretical challenges. Even if several lines of reasoning seek to identify the essence of life phenomenon, most of these thoughts contain fundamental problem in their basic conceptual structure. Most concepts fail to identify either necessary or sufficient features to define life. Here, we analyzed the main conceptual frameworks regarding theoretical aspects that have been supporting the (...) most accepted concepts of life, such as (i) the physical, (ii) the cellular and (iii) the molecular approaches. Based on an ontological analysis, we propose that Life should not be positioned under the ontological category of Matter. Yet, life should be better understood under the top-level ontology of “Process”. Exercising an epistemological approach, we propose that the essential characteristic that pervades each and every living being is the presence of organic codes. Therefore, we explore theories in biosemiotics and code biology in order to propose a clear concept of life as a macrocode composed by multiple inter-related coding layers. This way, as life is a sort of metaphysical process of encoding, the living beings became the molecular materialization of that process. From the proposed concept, we show that the evolutionary process is a fundamental characteristic for life’s maintenance but it is not necessary to define life, as many organisms are clearly alive but they do not participate in the evolutionary process (such as infertile hybrids). The current proposition opens a fertile field of debate in astrobiology, epistemology, biosemiotics, code biology and robotics. (shrink)

In this research work a novel two-step system for anomaly detection is presented and tested over several real datasets. In the first step the novel Exploratory Projection Pursuit, Beta Hebbian Learning algorithm, is applied over each dataset, either to reduce the dimensionality of the original dataset or to face nonlinear datasets by generating a new subspace of the original dataset with lower, or even higher, dimensionality selecting the right activation function. Finally, in the second step Principal Component Analysis anomaly detection (...) is applied to the new subspace to detect the anomalies and improve its classification capabilities. This new approach has been tested over several different real datasets, in terms of number of variables, number of samples and number of anomalies. In almost all cases, the novel approach obtained better results in terms of area under the curve with similar standard deviation values. In case of computational cost, this improvement is only remarkable when complexity of the dataset in terms of number of variables is high. (shrink)

Historically, taxonomy, which is the area responsible for describing new species, used a priori only morphological characteristics. Darwin already pointed out that there was a great divergence among taxonomists when they classified some organism as a species. When a new species is described, due to its historical weight, the morphological characters are considered as the first species demarcation criterion, however, with the advance of genetics and molecular biology, new methods are added. The use of multiple methods seems to be necessary (...) for us to develop a contemporary taxonomy, so, a little more than a decade ago, the “integrative taxonomy” emerged, which refers to a taxonomy that aims to integrate all available data sources to frame the data. species limits. Data integration is not possible, as we do not have the technological capacity to do so. In view of this, we can interact the data through interactive taxonomy, which suggests, a way of treating the data under the assumption of different lines of evidence, through which the explanations have logical consequences that can be tested, mitigating the subjectivity of the subject in the process. Data interactions can overlap taxonomic descriptions, as they could encompass different phenomena and problem solving, thereby mitigating subjectivism. Therefore, in different fields, at least two indications would be necessary, which could be contained in two different approaches, one hypothetical and one by estimation. Such interpellations would contain evidence with different assumptions and dissimilar data characteristics, thus increasing the number of evidence, as well as improving the reliability of the argument. And yet in the very notions of "literacy" and "progress," some (...) weaknesses in Robb's work can be found. For example, as W. V. Harris observed in his Ancient Literacy , 3ft., there is no single definition of literacy or orality, and although Robb cites Harris's book , he takes no special account of it in attempting to define or characterize what he means by "orality" and "literacy." And in his zeal to provide a survey of the influence of alphabetic literacy on Plato, Robb perhaps oversimplifies the tension that existed between the spoken and written work in the ancient world. In Sartrean philosophy, the body is a central element in explaining the nature of intentionality, that is, the nature of how our consciousness apprehends reality. His corporeal phenomenology aims to refute the followers of the Cartesian tradition of the mind. At the same time, in the contemporary philosophy of mind and cognition, supporters of the enactivist tradition seek to elucidate the body's central role in the constitution of cognition. Likewise, their opponents are the adherents of cognitivism, who see the locus (...) of cognition in the brain as an informational processing device for symbolic (representational) content. In this article, we intend to develop a close relationship between the Sartrean conception of intentionality and that offered by sensorimotor enactivism. Both defend the centrality of the body in so-called "cognitive" or "mental" processes; both defend a kind of externalism about mental content; and both criticize the internalist and representationalist paradigm focused on internal processes only located in the brain. These similarities allow us to trace a relationship of continuity between Sartrean phenomenology and the embodied traditions of the mind. (shrink)

Neste artigo, defendemos que as teorias euronorcêntricas da modernidade, cujo mote é a reconstrução filosófico-sociológica do processo de modernização ocidental sofrem de uma cegueira histórico-sociológica que é caracterizada por três pontos básicos: o desenvolvimento dessa mesma modernização ocidental como um processo autorreferencial, auto-subsistente, auto-suficiente, endógeno e autônomo, de modo que haveria a modernidade enquanto racionalização e todo o resto enquanto tradicionalismo, o que, por outro lado, não impede as teorias da modernidade de correlacionarem modernidade-modernização, racionalização, universalismo e gênero humano; a (...) separação entre modernidade cultural e modernização econômico-social, a primeira enquanto esfera puramente normativa e a segunda enquanto esfera basicamente instrumental, lógico-técnica, com o objetivo de salvar-se um conceito normativo de universalismo epistemológico-moral que se confunde com a própria modernidade cultural; e, como condição de tudo isso, o apagamento do e o silenciamento sobre o colonialismo enquanto uma consequência do desenvolvimento da modernização ocidental como um todo. Argumentamos que uma práxis decolonial latino-americana tem na denúncia, no desvelamento e na desconstrução dessa cegueira histórico-sociológica das teorias euronorcêntricas da modernidade em sua estilização do processo de modernização ocidental o ponto de partida epistemológico-político fundamental para constituir-se como alternativa ao paradigma normativo da modernidade, para fundar o seu discurso filosófico-sociológico da modernização ocidental em sua correlação com o colonialismo. Este artículo sugiere que las élites políticas venezolanas podrían contemplar el poder compartido como un medio para restaurar el Estado-nación. El artículo profundiza en los retos y las perspectivas de adoptar el poder compartido como estrategia de las élites no sólo para el mantenimiento de la paz, sino también, y de manera crucial, para los procesos de pacificación. Partiendo de una (...) evaluación general de la democracia venezolana, identifica los factores que pueden obstaculizar la democracia consociacional. A continuación, el artículo analiza los elementos sociopolíticos que favorecen la autocracia y la partitocracia, antes de discutir los retos y oportunidades actuales del poder compartido. Destaca el papel de las élites venezolanas y el persistente problema de la no-circulación de las élites como factores críticos en el actual estancamiento político. En la modernidad tradicional la realidad se presenta desde una mathesis universalis que la explica y le confiere unos contornos fijos y claros desde los cuales es posible construir todo el edificio de la ciencia natural que lo explica. Así, el mundo del hombre se observará desde las leyes universales que rigen todo comportamiento humano en sociedad. Para Nietzsche, por el contrario, el mundo sólo encuentra su fundamento en el devenir de configuraciones de fuerzas que no se rigen por ninguna (...) ley previa más allá de su propia relación. Igualmente, en Baltasar Gracián, es ampliamente apoyada la tesis de que el aragonés propone una «nihilización» del mundo que coloca su fundamento fuera, en fuga. Nos proponemos analizar las reflexiones de Baltasar Gracián y Friedrich Nietzsche de acuerdo a las cuales el mundo aparece desde su «inmundicia» y falta de fundamento en contra de esa visión moderna que busca someter al mundo a unas leyes fijas y universales. Sin embargo y, al mismo tiempo, queremos mostrar cómo esta visión no conduce a un nihilismo resignado, sino que, por el contrario, impone al hombre la responsabilidad de, aceptando este desfondamiento del mundo, hacer de él algo que merezca la pena ser vivido. Freud’s work is characterized by elaborating an ethic of the subject, but of the subject understood not in a traditional sense, as a given and complete subject, but on the contrary, as a divided, unfinished and contingent subject. O humor é hoje um dos principais atrativos turísticos do Ceará, sendo divulgado lado a lado com as belezas naturais do Estado. Trata-se de um humor muito peculiar e com características próprias e distintas: a molecagem, a irreverência e a linguagem popular. Sete dias por semana, ao longo de todo o ano, grande número de profissionais se apresentam em bares, restaurantes e barracas de praia bem como fazem participação nos meios de comunicação de massa locais. Esta forma relativamente nova de (...) entretenimento-turismo tem como protagonistas os chamados ‘humoristas do Ceará’, denominação que se refere à geração que surgiu a partir de um movimento artístico inovador de apresentações cômico-teatrais nos bares da cidade em meados dos anos 1980. A hipótese deste trabalho é que foi a partir de sua aparição bem como da apropriação de uma linguagem e estilo ditos bregas que a produção artístico-cultural de humor no estado passou a ser encarada com uma característica local, sendo então agregada ao próprio espírito da cidade e passando, posteriormente, a integrar o pacote turístico do estado do Ceará. Las redes epistolares pueden brindar una imagen de las redes entre intelectuales de una época determinada. Esto se vincula con el concepto de "colegios invisibles";, que son conjuntos de personas que trabajan en campos científicos semejantes y se comunican mutuamente por algún medio informal. Al final de su vida, Romero (1891-1962) se había conectado por cartas con un gran número de intelectuales del mundo. En este trabajo se analizan 1.025 cartas enviadas a Francisco Romero por 302 autores entre 1922 (...) y 1963. Epistolary networks can provide an understanding of the intellectual networks within a certain time. This is linked to the concept of "invisible colleges"; which are groups of people working in scientific fields similar to each other who communicate informally by any means. At the end of his life Romero (1891-1962) had been connected by letters with a large number of intellectuals in the world. In this study, we analyzed 1025 letters to Francisco Romero by 302 authors between 1922 and 1963. (shrink)

La noción ilustrada de opinión pública apelaba a un circuito de comunicación racional que enlazaba a los actores (de la esfera pública burguesa primero, de la sociedad civil después), con las normas vinculantes emanadas de las instancias formales de creación y aplicación de la ley. Este enlace entra en crisis en el siglo XIX, y parece abandonarse definitivamente con el advenimiento de la sociedad de masas, la expansión de los medios y la autonomización del sistema político. Este trabajo analiza, en primer lugar, la recuperación de la opinión pública como mecanismo articulador entre sociedad civil y sistema político. Luego se expone la caracterización de la opinión pública como filtro y selección de un campo de sentido para la decisión política. La intención es mostrar que, funcionalmente adaptadas a la realidad de las sociedades complejas, ambas caracterizaciones siguen afirmando una relación fuerte entre opinión pública y decisión política legítima. Este trabajo se enmarca dentro de un proyecto de investigación más amplio sobre las difíciles relaciones entre la elaboración de la decisión democrática y el de la conformación de la opinión pública, lo que se debe a que ambos fenómenos, la democracia y la opinión pública, parten de presupuestos filosófico-políticos diferentes. Como primer paso se ofrece una serie de precisiones sobre el concepto de opinión pública, que se articulan desde dos ejes (proceso-producto y holismo-atomismo). Así se analizan cuatro posibles usos (...) de la expresión: opinión pública como sujeto social unitario y definido, que es capaz de emitir juicios y expresar preferencias; como contenido concordante de esos juicios y preferencias; como proceso plural y colectivo de formación de convicciones y actitudes individuales y, por último, como descripción estadística de la presencia de tales convicciones y actitudes en los diferentes segmentos sociales. In this paper, linguistic-analytic philosophy has been identified as the dominant methodology in the philosophy of sport. The hermeneutics of sport is contrasted with linguistic-analytic philosophy by analyzing Heidegger’s view of Truth. In doing so, two views of philosophy are compared: ontology or description. Sport hermeneutics’ task has to do with description. Hermeneutical explanations of sport attempt to describe the facticity of sport. Such a facticity is formed by three moments: embodiment, capabilities, and tradition. They are not components of sport (...) that can be identified as essential components but rather, they are identifiable only for analytic purposes. These three above-mentioned elements cannot be identified as elements, because they are intrinsically intertwined forming a unitary network of meaning. The task of sport hermeneutics is to describe the different relationships that compose such a network of meaning. In doing so, sport is a humane activity linked to the constitutive human task of making sense of reality by projecting meaning into it. (shrink)

Knives, birds' wings, and mountain slopes are used for certain purposes: cutting, flying, and climbing. A bird's wings have in common with knives that they have been 'designed' for the purpose they serve, which purpose accounts for their existence, whereas mountain slopes have come about by geological processes independently of their uses for climbing. A bird's wings differ from a knife in that they have not been designed or produced by any conscious agent; rather, the wings, like the slopes, are (...) outcomes of natural processes without any intentional causation. Evolutionary biologists use teleological language and teleological explanations. I propose that this use is appropriate, because teleological explanations are hypotheses that can be subject to empirical testing. The distinctiveness of teleological hypotheses is that they account for the existence of a feature in terms of the function it serves; for example, wings have evolved and persist because flying is beneficial to birds by increasing their chances of surviving and reproducing. Features of organisms that are explained with teleological hypotheses include structures, such as wings; processes, such as development from egg to adult; and behaviours, such as nest building. A proximate explanation of these features is the function they serve; an ultimate explanation that they all share is their contribution to the reproductive fitness of the organisms. I distinguish several kinds of teleological explanations, such as natural and artificial, as well as bounded and unbounded, some of which but not others apply to biological explanations. (shrink)

In this paper, I engage in the debate on the definition of the cyborg. I identify the two defining components of the traditional definition of the cyborg: the symbiotic relationship between human nature and technology; and the embodiment of a superhuman or inhuman feature or ability. Then, I trace these two components in the scholarly debate on the cyborg. To conclude, I explore the role the scholarly view of the cyborg plays in the debate on cyborg-athletes in the philosophy of (...) sport. (shrink)

Confundiendo las fronteras, haciéndose pasar por nadie siendo alguien, prefiriendo el “Frío” del hielo al calor de las llamas, y yaciendo con el abad Donissan para quitarle su aliento, Satanás nos acecha siempre, menos para mostrarse que para atraparnos. Una “lectura filosófica” de estas páginas fulgurantes de Sous le soleil de Satan (encuentro del abad Donissan con el maquignon picard) elevará a Bernanos al rango de los más grandes pensadores católicos. Empirical research on Rational Choice Theory has brought up two focus of the economics laws problem. On one hand, we find the authors who state that the neoclassical economics laws are explanatory and predictive on specific cases: in transparent contexts in which the standard rationality operates successfully. On the other hand, we find the authors who state that the descriptive theories of the rational choice opens up a research path in which fundamental principles of the neoclassical building could be questioned. (...) Both view points have generated an important standard Rational Choice Theory revision what has produced the so called descriptive view point . It implies understanding that most of the choices take place under risky or uncertainty conditions and, that, these choices are far more complex than the normative Rational Choice Theory supposes. This article's main goal is to expand the descriptive point of view in rational choice, theorizing how some factors, coming from the social and cultural environment, operate within the rational choice. Into space of this research essay we find the debatable question of whether these sort of proposals expands the explanation of the deviation of the rational choice normative theory, and that, of the disturbing causes of the microeconomics laws, or they call into question fundamental principles of these laws and therefore they are opening the possibility to focus some economics issues in a new different manner. Jerry Fodor and Ernest Lepore have launched a powerful attack against Paul Churchland's connectionist theory of semantics—aka State Space Semantics. In one part of their overall attack, they exploit the potentially orthogonal histories of different individuals to introduce what they labeled ‘the collateral information problem’. Aarre Laakso and Gary Cottrell have recently put forward a mathematical technique for measuring conceptual similarity across neural networks. Churchland uses Laakso and Cottrell's tecnique to defend State Space Semantics. In this paper I shall highlight (...) a potential problem for Laakso and Cottrell's technique, and for Churchland's subsequent defence of connectionist semantics that has been ignored in the connectionist literature. I shall argue that a connectionist sympathiser of Churchland could not make use of Laakso and Cottrell's neurosimulations to address Fodor and Lepore's collateral information challenge. (shrink)

Traditionally, the field of science and technology studies (STS) considered the scientific laboratory as the central site of knowledge production and technological development. While providing rich analyses of the social construction of scientific knowledge and the role of non-human actors, STS scholars have often neglected the university – the very context in which laboratories themselves are embedded – as a relevant object of research. In this paper, we argue for re-introducing the university as a relevant category and object of analysis (...) by using the notion of epistemic virtues to link epistemic culture – traditionally the focus of STS – and epistemic structure – traditionally the focus of higher education studies. Advancing this line of argumentation, we make three analytical moves. First, we explore academic freedom as a specific version of negative liberty that extends beyond disciplinary boundaries. We suggest that academics continuously negotiate academic freedom considering culturally and socially situated epistemic virtues such as objectivity and neutrality. Second, we introduce the notion of humility to revisit scientific knowledge production more generally and academic freedom in particular. Finally, we argue that practicing humility leads to enacting the university as an infrastructure of becoming otherwise, thereby enriching our understanding of universities as distinct and highly complex social spaces with a logic of their own. Refletimos como em dois momentos – no “enxerto hermenêutico sobre a fenomenolo­gia” e no debate da alternativa entre hermenêutica das tradições e a crítica das ideologias (Gadamer/Habermas) –, Ricoeur parece acompanhar o mesmo movimento operatório da retomada: da inscrição de um discurso num outro ao mesmo tempo em que compreende toda a variedade interpretativa decorrente dessa alteridade, isto é, da articulação uno­-múltiplo. A hermenêutica ricoeuriana é, assim, uma tomada de posição análoga àquela da Logique de la Philosophie de Eric Weil (...) em relação ao conflito das filosofias. Porém, em Ricoeur, a retomada não é mais (predominantemente) a aplicação sobre as tipologias filosóficas ou dedução coerente através de uma lógica global, mas diálogo singular com os problemas suscitados pelos discursos dos filósofos em sua pretensão de universalidade e de sentido. We argue that phenomenology can be of central and positive importance to the cognitive sciences, and that it can also learn from the empirical research conducted in those sciences. We discuss the project of naturalizing phenomenology and how this can be best accomplished. We provide several examples of how phenomenology and the cognitive sciences can integrate their research. Specifically, we consider issues related to embodied cognition and intersubjectivity. We provide a detailed analysis of issues related to time-consciousness, with reference to (...) understanding schizophrenia and the loss of the sense of agency. We offer a positive proposal to address these issues based on a neurobiological dynamic-systems model. (shrink)

En el tercer milenio, en medio de una conciencia generalizada de crisis como resultado de los espectaculares cambios habidos en las dinámicas sociales, en las formas de relacionarse, en los perfiles de las ideologías y hasta en la disposición del hecho religioso, no es extraño que se asuma la vivencia de vacío abierto y lábil. Se han disociado las grandes "certezas" que han dirigido el desarrollo de la humanidad durante los últimos siglos -"la verdad os hará libres" se está transformando (...) en "la libertad os hará la verdad"-, se han disipado los límites y las referencias guía. Son las dinámicas emergentes, encriptadas y por lo general confusas las que vienen a ocupar ese vacío imponiendo sus propios códigos y reglas.
