Current moral philosophy has serious problems with the concept of human dignity. Although it seems to be an almost inevitable ingredient of every day moral judgments, philosophers have difficulties to find an analysis of the concept that could support this central role. One way out of these difficulties consists in a closer look at the various areas where the concept is used so widely and naturally, in the attempt to extract inductively an adequate understanding of human dignity from these contexts. In the article, this strategy is used to glean features of human dignity from the history of psychiatry, condense them into a plausible understanding of human dignity and finally sketch some practical implications for modern psychiatric ethics. Der Beitrag soll dreierlei leisten. Erstens gibt er einen Einstieg in das Thema Menschenwürde in der modernen Philosophie und beschreibt das Dilemma, in dem sich die Philosophie zurzeit bei der Beschäftigung mit der Menschenwürde befindet. Zweitens zeigt er auf der Basis eines kursorischen Durchgangs durch die Geschichte der Psychiatrie, wie die Psychiatrie zur Lösung dieses Dilemmas beitragen kann. Und drittens zieht er aus dem so gewonnenen Menschenwürdeverständnis Konsequenzen für die psychiatrische Ethik. (shrink)

Interaction analysis opens promising perspectives for nursing education. Sixteen students and three teachers conducted an interaction analysis, based on video-recorded therapeutic activities. The study aims to understand the practice of self-disclosure in psychiatric nursing. How does the use of interaction analysis tools in a training setting constitute a resource for the acquisition of professional skills? We show how this training design constitutes a resource for : a) the acquisition of clinical theoretical knowledge, b) the articulation of theoretical and practical knowledge, (...) c) the development of a non-judging descriptive posture useful for the clinical observation. La méthode d’observation des nourrissons a été mise au point par Esther Bick pour la formation de psychothérapeutes d’enfants. Cette méthode est susceptible d’apporter une aide aux parents et aux enfants en cas de difficultés relationnelles ou de perturbations psychopathologiques précoces de l’enfant. L’auteur décrit une application thérapeutique de la méthode d’Esther Bick qu’il illustre par du matériel clinique.

It’s easy to forget that physiognomony was a successful story since it seems nowadays to be Lavater’s fantasy deeply rooted in its time. Not for the philosopher and psychiatrist François Dagognet. He indeed tries to “upgrade” the physiognomony with the aim to find a new way to decipher the inner based on the outside and therefore founds a biopsychiatry. The status of the speech is of a particular interest to understand the theoretical position of Dagognet.

This fictional case study examines a person’s right to privacy, including the protection of their name, voice, and image, in the event that they decide to work at the same establishment where they and/or their relatives receive mental health-related therapeutic care.

L'oeuvre d'Henri Maldiney (1912-2013) occupe aujourd'hui une place de premier ordre dans le paysage philosophique. Lors même qu'il n'a que tardivement publié son premier ouvrage, Regard Parole Espace, en 1973, le profond renouvellement qu'il a su introduire au sein de la phénoménologie a obligé philosophes, mais aussi psychiatres ou théoriciens de l'oeuvre d'art, à repenser leurs concepts comme leurs pratiques. C'est là ce que ces études, initialement issues d'un colloque interdisciplinaire, entendent méditer. Elles abordent aussi bien la place qui est (...) celle de Maldiney au sein de la tradition philosophique, qu'elles réfléchissent à l'impact de sa pensée sur le traitement des questions psychiatriques et esthétiques. Psychiatrisches Handeln sieht sich in besonderem Maße dem Risiko dogmatischer Einengung ausgesetzt. Schon dies stellt eine Parallele zu Fichte dar, dessen Wissenschaftslehre es ja auch wesentlich um die Kritik an unbegründeten erkenntnistheoretischen Vorurteilen, also an dogmatischen Fassungen von Theorien, ging. Seine - und auch schon vor ihm Kants - Transzendentalphilosophie wandte sich gegen das idealistische Dogma, nur der Geist als absolut freies Wirken sei von Bedeutung, und gegen das realistische Dogma, die Welt bestehe aus »real« außer uns und unabhängig von (...) uns existierenden Dingen, die wir zwar erkennend abbilden können und sollen, die wir aber dadurch nicht beeinflussen und schon gar nicht wesentlich mit konstituieren. Psychiatry is increasingly dominated by the reductionist claim that mental illness is caused by neurobiological abnormalities such as chemical imbalances in the brain. Critical psychiatry does not believe that this is the whole story and proposes a more ethical foundation for practice. This book describes an original framework for renewing mental health services in alliance with people with mental health problems. It is an advance over the polarization created by the "anti-psychiatry" of the past.
