Stoic conception of mental disorders is still interesting and could be fruitful used in the current debate on psychiatric classification.

The use of tensed language and the metaphor of set ‘formation’ found in informal descriptions of the iterative conception of set are seldom taken at all seriously. Both are eliminated in the nonmodal stage theories that formalise this account. To avoid the paradoxes, such accounts deny the Maximality thesis, the compelling thesis that any sets can form a set. This paper seeks to save the Maximality thesis by taking the tense more seriously than has been customary (although not literally). (...) A modal stage theory, MST, is developed in a bimodal language, governed by a tenselike logic. Such a language permits a very natural axiomatisation of the iterative conception, which upholds the Maximality thesis. It is argued that the modal approach is consonant with mathematical practice and a plausible metaphysics of sets and shown that MST interprets a natural extension of Zermelo set theory less the axiom of Infinity and, when extended with a further axiom concerning the extent of the hierarchy, interprets Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory. Il peut sembler incongru de supposer qu'il y a une identité entre l'histoire de la science et l'histoire d'une idéologie C'est pourtant ce que donne à penser, comme on le verra, une comparaison entre la notion kuhnienne de paradigme et la notion d'idéologie. Une relation a déjà été établie entre les deux notions. Nous croyons qu'elle reste superficielle et ne conduit qu'à une compréhension négative. On pose cette relation pour dire que chez Kuhn le paradigme détermine le comportement de la (...) communauté scientifique à la manière de l'idéologie, au sens péjoratif du terme, c'est-à-dire d'une façon dogmatique, aveugle et passionnée, produisant des décisions irrationnelles et sectaires. Notre intention est d'abord d'expliciter la relation entre la notion kuhnienne de paradigme et la notion d'idéologie. Trois résultats sont visés. En premier lieu, il s'agit de donner plus de signification à cette relation et de la préciser. En second lieu, de contribuer à l'étude du problème de la justification en science, tel qu'il peut se poser à partir de Kuhn. En troisième lieu, de montrer que, dans la mesure où la description de Kuhn est convaincante, et où la relation que nous analysons est fondée, la séparation entre la science et l'idéologie est à repenser. Contemporary discussions about practical reason or practical rationality invoke four competing views which can be named as follows by reference to their historical models: Aristotelian, Hobbesian, Kantian and Nietzschean. The subject-matter of this article is a defence of the Kantian conception of practical rationality in the interpretation of discourse theory. At the heart, lies the justification and the application of the rules of discourse. An argument consisting of three parts is pre sented to justify the rules of discourse. The (...) three parts are as follows: a transcen dental-pragmatic argument; an argument which takes account of the maximisation of individual utility and an empirical premise about an interest in correctness. Within the framework of the problem of application, the article outlines a justification of human rights and of the basic institutions of the democratic constitutional state on the basis of discourse theory.
