Abstract

Audens modernistische gedicht 'September 1, 1939' verschilt veel van Arnolds victoriaanse 'Dover Beach'. De twee werken hebben echter hun diepste bedoeling gemeen, meent Cynthia Ozick: allebei de gedichten vragen om hoop en vertroosting in een woelige, chaotische wereld.
