Abstract

This chapter examines the social-economic situation of Muslims vis-a-vis other communities based on data collected from a large-scale sample survey undertaken by Commission of Inquiry on Socio-Economic and Educational Condition of Muslims in Telangana State. It is found that Muslims are more backward than their Hindu counterparts in education; the poor economic situation, additional need of labour to earn and marriage were the main reasons for Muslim households not sending their children to school; a lower percentage of Muslim households had pucca houses compared to their Hindu counterparts, and Muslim households are facing difficulties in accessing banking and credit services.
