Abstract

‘Vier Russische componisten van wereldformaat waren tijdgenoten van Stalin. Twee van hen, Stravinski en Rachmaninov, kozen ervoor om hun land te verlaten en hun muzikale loopbaan in ballingschap voort te zetten. Prokofjev verbleef afwisselend in Rusland en daarbuiten. Sjostakovitsj hield vast aan zijn voornemen om zijn vaderland onder geen beding te verlaten. Is dat een teken van zwakheid?’
