This series publishes outstanding monographs and edited volumes that investigate all aspects of Kant's philosophy, including its systematic relationship to other philosophical approaches, both past and present. Studies that appear in the series are distinguished by their innovative nature and ability to close lacunae in the research. In this way, the series is a venue for the latest findings in scholarship on Kant.

This paper investigates different readings of plural and reciprocal sentences and how they can be derived from syntactic surface structures in a systematic way. The main thesis is that these readings result from different ways of inserting logical operators at the level of Logical Form. The basic operator considered here is a cumulative mapping from predicates that apply to singularities onto the corresponding predicates that apply to pluralities. Given a theory which allows for free insertion of such operators, it can (...) then be shown that the lexical semantics of the reciprocal expressions each other/one another consists of exactly two components, namely an anaphoric variable and a non-identity statement. This receives further support from the observation that it is exactly these two components that can be focused by only; all that remains to be done is to correctly manipulate these components at the level of LF. In dieser Studie wird erstmals der Versuch unternommen, die bei der Klassifikation von Musik zur Anwendung gelangenden Kriterien und ihre Interdependenzen systematisch zu erfassen und zu beschreiben. Als Quellen dienen dabei Typologien der Musik aus der Zeit vom sechsten (Boethius) bis zum neunzehnten Jahrhundert (A.B. Marx und Ferdinand Hand) sowie die bisherigen musikwissenschaftliche Ansatze einer Gattungstheorie. Unter Einbeziehung von Erkenntnissen aus der Literaturwissenschaft werden insgesamt acht Grundkriterien der Klassifikation erlautert. Mit ihrer Hilfe lassen sich die vorliegenden Definitionen und Typologien vergleichend (...) analysieren und in Beziehung zueinander setzen. AbschlieBend geht die Studie der Frage nach, ob der Gattungsbegriff in der zeitgenossischen Kunstmusik tatsachlich - wie von einigen Autoren postuliert - obsolet geworden ist. Die Antwort darauf ist negativ: Als Verstandnishilfe fur die Rezipienten von zeitgenossischer Kunstmusik sind Gattungen heute womoglich wichtiger als jemals zuvor. Dr. phil. (Univ. This study tries, for the first time, exhaustively to collect and describe the criteria used to classify music and to consider the interrelationship between these criteria in a systematic way. Typologies of music from the sixth century (Boethius) to the nineteenth (A.B. Marx and Ferdinand Hand) serve as sources for this study, as well as musicological writings on genre theory. Partly by exploiting the findings of literary criticism, eight basic criteria of classification are developed. They allow a comparative analysis of all existing musical definitions and typologies. Finally, the study discusses whether or not genres have become obsolete in contemporary art music (as some scholars have proclaimed). The answer is negative: genres today are perhaps more important in supporting an adequate reception of contemporary art music than at any other time in history. Wolfgang Marx was born in 1967 in Bremen. He studied Historical and Systematic Musicology and Philosophy at Hamburg University where he took the Dr phil in 2002. He was Product Manager for Berlin Classics in 1998 and Catalogue Manager of an internet music retailer in Hamburg in 2000. Since 2002, he has held a permanent Lectureship in Musicology at University College Dublin. He has co-edited a volume on Gyorgy Ligeti, published on Medieval organ tablatures and the requiem as a musical genre, and is co-editor of the Frankfurter Zeitschrift fur Musikwissenschaft and the Journal of the Society for Musicology in Ireland. Darum redet Hölderlin den Dichterfreund Wilhelm Heinse an : »Aber Freund! wir kommen zu spät. Zwar leben die Götter Aber über dem Haupt droben in anderer Welt. Endlos wirken sie da und scheinens wenig zu achten, Ob wir leben, so sehr schonen die Himmlischen uns. Denn nicht immer vermag ein schwaches Gefäß sie zu fassen, Nur zu Zeiten erträgt göttliche Fülle (...) der Mensch.« Diese Distichen-Reihe beginnt mit einem zweifachen »Aber« und antwortet so auf jenen Anruf, der zuvor an den Dichter-Genossen gerichtet war : »So komm! daß wir das Offene schauen«. Das Offene ist wie das offene Meer grenzenlos und wie der offene Himmel unverstellt. Das Offene nun, das der vom Dichter- und Nachtgott getriebene Sänger zu schauen aufbricht, ist die grenzenlose Einheit von Himmel und Erde, von Sterblichen und Unsterblichen, in der sich einst der Gott unverstellt zeigte. Aber wir sind Abendländer und Epigonen. Wir kommen zu spät. Das »Brautfest der Götter und Menschen« ist vorüber. Über unser hesperisches Geschlecht ist die Nacht der Götterferne hereingebrochen. Der vorliegende Band enthalt sechs teilweise stark iiberarbeitete Aufsatze, die in der Zeit zwischen der Niederschrift des Buches Theorienstrnkturen und Theoriendynamik, Springer-Verlag 1973, im folgenden mit [Theoriendynamik] bezeichnet, und der Monographie The Strncturalist View of Theories. A Pos­ sible Analogue of the Bourbaki Programme in Physical Science, Springer-Ver­ lag 1979, im folgenden kurz [Strnkturalismus] genannt, entstanden sind. In diesen Abhandlungen werden jeweils gewisse Aspekte des strukturalistischen Theorienkonzeptes behandelt. Am starksten iiberarbeitet wurden die Auf­ satze II, IV, V und VI, die (...) urspriinglich in englischer Sprache erschienen waren. Vier der sechs Arbeiten, namlich I, III, IV und VI, bilden auBerdem erweiterte Fassungen von Vortragen. Obwohl das zweite Buch [Strnkturalismus] durch P. Feyerabends ausftihr­ liche Diskussion der strukturalistischen Auffassung im British Journal for the Philosophy of Science, Dezember 1977, angeregt worden ist, stellt es seinem Ansatz und Aufbau nach eher den Versuch einer systematischen Kurzdarstel­ lung des strukturalistischen Vorgehens nach seinem letzten Stande dar. Dem­ gegeniiber entstanden die hier verOffentlichten Artikel stets aus einem ganz be­ stimmten AnlaB. Diese Anlasse konnte man schematisch in drei Klassen unter­ teilen: Entweder ging es darum, eine anschauliche intuitive Ein/iihrnng zu lie­ fern (I und V); oder die Aufgabe bestand darin, die Beziehung zu anderen philosophischen Positionen. wie z. B. derjenigen L. Wittgensteins, H. Putnams, K. Poppers oder T. S. Kuhns. zu analysieren (II. It is often assumed that Aristotle, Boethius, Chrysippus, and other ancient logicians advocated a connexive conception of implication according to which no proposition entails, or is entailed by, its own negation. Thus Aristotle claimed that the proposition ‘if B is not great, B itself is great […] is impossible’. Similarly, Boethius maintained that two implications of the type ‘If p then r’ and ‘If p then not-r’ are incompatible. Furthermore, Chrysippus proclaimed a conditional to be ‘sound when the contradictory of (...) its consequent is incompatible with its antecedent’, a view which, in the opinion of S. McCall, entails the aforementioned theses of Aristotle and Boethius. Now a critical examination of the historical sources shows that the ancient logicians most likely meant their theses as applicable only to ‘normal’ conditionals with antecedents which are not self-contradictory. The corresponding restrictions of Aristotle’s and Boethius’ theses to such self-consistent antecedents, however, turn out to be theorems of ordinary modal logic and thus don’t give rise to any non-classical system of genuinely connexive logic,. Diese Arbeit reflektiert die Großstadt phänomenologisch konsequent als „Lebenswelt“ - die Lebenswelt Großstadt vorgestellt als Gestalt und Gestaltung wirklich wesentlichen Menschseins hier und jetzt. Damit, und das ist ein Ziel dieser Untersuchung, lässt sich eine Phänomenologie der Lebenswelt Großstadt nicht von einer existentiell gerichteten Anthropologie lösen. - Wir leben, arbeiten, lieben und leiden eben nicht in einer Lebenswelt an und für sich. Nicht eine abstrakt eingeführte Lebenswelt wird als das Fundament unseres Daseins vorgestellt, also unseres Wahrnehmens, Erkennens, Fühlens; nicht sie (...) ist Horizont unseres Krankseins, unserer Kunst und unserer Religion. Vielmehr wird die Lebenswelt Großstadt phänomenologisch eingeführt als die Wirklichkeit, die unser Da-und-So-sein prägt und verändert. So reflektiert sich die Lebenswelt Großstadt phänomenologisch als „aktives“ und „passives“, als „willkürliches“ und „unwillkürliches“ existentielles Aktgeflecht, in und mit dem sich das leibhafte Dasein ganz und gar als In-der-Welt-sein eingefaltet erlebt. Lebenswelt Großstadt und unser Da-und-So-in-der-Welt-sein können phänomenologisch also gleichgesetzt werden. Somit ist Daseins-Analyse Lebenswelt-Analyse und umgekehrt. Das hätte - und darauf macht diese Arbeit besonders aufmerksam - Folgen für Psychologie, Medizin, Psychiatrie, und nicht zuletzt auch für die Theologie. (shrink)

SummaryA simple and precise definition is offered of “term t of theory T being T‐theoretical” which can be applied to any formalized theory. The definition is in line with and emends traditional accounts of theoreticity. Its adequacy is demonstrated by application to three examples: exchange economics, classical mechanics and collision mechanics.

Hermann Grassmann is known to be the founder of modern vector and tensor calculus. Having as a theologian no formal education in mathematics at a university he got his basic ideas for this mathematical innovation at least to some extent from listening to Schleiermacher’s lectures on Dialectics and, together with his brother Robert, reading its publication in 1839. The paper shows how the idea of unity and various levels of reality first formulated in Schleiermacher’s talks about religion in 1799 were (...) transformed by him into a philosophical system in his dialectics and then were picked up by Grassmann and operationalized in his philosophical-mathematical treatise on the extension theory in 1844. Irrational thinking, religious fundamentalism, cults, magical beliefs and esoteric themes increasingly dominate western public life and philosophical debates, while rationality and logical thinking is continuously and increasingly being vilified. This has led to a state of utmost helplessness, when dealing with claims of (religious) fundamentalism and illegitimate metaphysics of power, while conversely the day-to-day living environment remains highly technical and positivistic. Puzzled by this increasing division, this book tries to elucidate: The emergence of the concept “irrational”, after Kant’s Critique of (...) Pure Reason and the metamorphosis from its origins at the end of the 18th century into the 20th century. The methodical consequences of the Copernican revolution, which split off domains of the individual such as the body, nature, singularities, coincidence, will, life or the soul (which had been recognized as an organic compartment of the individual) as representations, converting them into new and dynamic elements for post-Kantian philosophies: body – Nietzsche, will – Schopenhauer, life – Lebensphilosophie, singularity/coincidence – existentialism, nature – romanticism, soul – early psychoanalysis etc. Finally, criteria for irrational philosophies are being presented.
