Starting from theories on dreams, the innovative philosophical atmosphere of the Western 12th century are examined here. It is shown that the integration of Arabic medical know-how eventually opened perspectives which brought about the new interest in the Byzantine and Arabic Aristotle. This is the opening speech of the SIEPM world Congress held in Freising in August 2012. It illustrates the general theme of the Congress – The Pleasure of Knowledge – by referring mainly to the Roman and the medieval Latin and vernacular tradition, with a special emphasis on Dante’s Convivio.
