Goals and targets: a developmental puzzle about sensitivity to others’ actions.Stephen A. Butterfill - 2019 - Synthese 198 (Suppl 17):3969-3990.
Sensitivity to others’ actions is essential for social animals like humans and a fundamental requirement for any kind of social cognition. Unsurprisingly, it is present in humans from early in the first year of life. But what processes underpin infants’ sensitivity to others’ actions? Any attempt to answer this question must solve twin puzzles about the development of goal tracking. Why does some, but not all, of infants’ goal tracking appear to be limited by their abilities to represent the observed (...)

Relational Psychoanalysis 3 Volume Set.Stephen A. Mitchell, Lewis Aron, Adrienne Harris & Melanie Suchet (eds.) - 1978 - Routledge.
Over the course of the past 15 years, there has been a vast sea change in American psychoanalysis. It takes the form of a broad movement away from classical psychoanalytic theorizing grounded in Freud's drive theory toward models of mind and development grounded in object relations concepts. In clinical practice, there has been a corresponding movement away from the classical principles of neutrality, abstinence and anonymity toward an interactive vision of the analytic situation that places the analytic relationship, with its (...)

    Engagements, Worlds, and Identity.Stephen A. Erickson - 1973 - Review of Metaphysics 27 (1):3 - 19.
My next point concerns the relative unity of these engagements and is largely negative. However comforting the situation might be were it to the contrary, we discover through extrapolating from particular engagements that our engagements form no coherent and systematic whole. In fact, some run contrary to others, and it is only because we fail to pursue them wholeheartedly that they are able to coexist with each other. In further point of fact, it might be that failure to bring certain (...)

Some of the manuscripts of Aelius Anstides include a short oration in the form of an encomium to an unnamed king. The oration is entitled in three manuscripts and in another. It has been pointed out that in the former group of manuscripts the title is not preceded by the words thus casting doubt on Aristidean authorship.

Garrett assesses the morality of leaders' political choices. Does the nature of leadership force us to tolerate or even accept marginally moral acts? Do acts considered unethical in one's private life become ethical when performed by a public servant for the good of the public?

Focus Introduction: Taking the Measure of Jonathan Edwards for Contemporary Religious Ethics.Stephen A. Wilson & Jean Porter - 2003 - Journal of Religious Ethics 31 (2):183 - 199.
The Journal of "Religious Ethics" marks the tercentenary of Edwards's birth with the following collection of essays. In keeping with the overall mission of the journal, this tribute takes the form of historical and constructive reflection, in which diverse perspectives on Edwards's work and diverse forms of engagement with it supplement and correct one another. Our hope is that these essays will serve both to generate interest in Edwards's work among those who are unfamiliar with him, and to advance the (...)

Caritas and Consciousness: Aristotle and Aquinas on Love of Neighbor.Stephen A. Calogero - 2013 - Philosophy and Theology 25 (2):167-180.
In Book IX of the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle discusses the motivating psychology of the benefactor. He finds that self-love is the crucial element of consciousness that accounts for the benefactor’s desire to participate constructively in the community of being. His analysis invites comparison with Aquinas’s treatment of the theological virtue of caritas. Similarities are found, but Aquinas’s approach leads to a discussion of divine beatitude where we find a somewhat surprising analogy between Aristotle’s human and Aquinas’s divine benefactor. For Aquinas (...)

Mixed Constitutionalism and Parliamentarism in Elizabethan England: The Case of Thomas Cartwright.Stephen A. Chavura - 2015 - History of European Ideas 41 (3):318-337.
SummaryThe Admonition Controversy, largely between Thomas Cartwright and John Whitgift has proven fecund ground for intellectual historians analysing the religious dimension to early-modern political ideas. This paper argues that the religious dimension of Cartwright's mixed constitutionalism needs better explanation, rather than just noting that his ecclesiastical mixed constitutionalism mirrors his political mixed constitutionalism. This paper tracks Cartwright's progressive, dialogical unfolding of his mixed constitutionalism in response to Whitgift's attempt to derive episcopacy from the fact of English monarchy, effectively discrediting the (...)

    The Normativity of Private Law.Stephen A. Smith - 2011 - Oxford Journal of Legal Studies 31 (2):215-242.
Private law presents itself in normative language—in the language of rights, duties, obligations and so on. This language presumes that private law tells citizens how they ought to behave. It is striking, therefore, that contemporary legal theorists often explain and evaluate private law with little reference to normativity. Theorists who write from welfarist and other broadly utilitarian perspectives, in particular, typically analyse private law exclusively in terms of the material incentives that it creates. These writers focus on the material consequences (...)

    Revealed Preference and Expected Utility.Stephen A. Clark - 2000 - Theory and Decision 49 (2):159-174.
This essay gives necessary and sufficient conditions for recovering expected utility from choice behavior in several popular models of uncertainty. In particular, these techniques handle a finite state model; a model for which the choice space consists of probability densities and the expected utility representation requires bounded, measurable utility; and a model for which the choice space consists of Borel probability measures and the expected utility representation requires bounded, continuous utility. The key result is the identification of the continuity condition (...)
