The false academy: predatory publishing in science and bioethics.Stefan Eriksson & Gert Helgesson - 2017 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 20 (2):163-170.
This paper describes and discusses the phenomenon ‘predatory publishing’, in relation to both academic journals and books, and suggests a list of characteristics by which to identify predatory journals. It also raises the question whether traditional publishing houses have accompanied rogue publishers upon this path. It is noted that bioethics as a discipline does not stand unaffected by this trend. Towards the end of the paper it is discussed what can and should be done to eliminate or reduce the effects (...)

  2. Sellars and Quine on empiricism and conceptual truth.Stefan Brandt - 2017 - British Journal for the History of Philosophy 25 (1):108-132.
I compare Sellars’s criticism of the ‘myth of the given’ with Quine’s criticism of the ‘two dogmas’ of empiricism, that is, the analytic–synthetic distinction and reductionism. In Sections I to III, I present Quine’s and Sellars’s views. In IV to X, I discuss similarities and differences in their views. In XI to XII, I show that Sellars’s arguments against the ‘myth of the given’ are incompatible with Quine’s rejection of the analytic–synthetic distinction.

Inference to the best explanation as a theory for the quality of mechanistic evidence in medicine.Stefan Dragulinescu - 2017 - European Journal for Philosophy of Science 7 (2):353-372.
Inference to the Best Explanation is usually employed in the Scientific Realism debates. As far as particular scientific theories are concerned, its most ready usage seems to be that of a theory of confirmation. There are however more uses of IBE, namely as an epistemological theory of testimony and as a means of categorising and justifying the sources of evidence. In this paper, I will present, develop and exemplify IBE as a theory of the quality of evidence - taking examples (...)

Organizations and Markets.Stefan Linder, Nicolai J. Foss & Peter G. Klein - 2015 - In Peter J. Boettke & Christopher J. Coyne, The Oxford Handbook of Austrian Economics. Oxford University Press USA.
Austrian economics focuses on markets but has much to say about organizations. In particular, Austrian insights on the structure of production, the heterogeneity and subjectivity of resources, the nature of uncertainty, the role of monetary calculation, and the function of the entrepreneur provide solid foundations for a distinctly Austrian theory of organizations. This chapter reviews these insights, discusses recent literature on Austrian economics and the theory of the firm, and suggests new directions for developing and extending an Austrian approach to (...)

Farmers Under Pressure. Analysis of the Social Conditions of Cases of Animal Neglect.Stefan B. Andrade & Inger Anneberg - 2014 - Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics 27 (1):103-126.
In this paper we analyse how risk factors in highly industrialised agriculture are connected to animal neglect. With Danish agriculture as a case study, we use two types of data. First, we use register data from Statistics Denmark to map how risk factors such as farmers’ financial and social troubles are connected to convictions of neglect. Second, we analyse narratives where interviewed farmers, involved in cases of neglect, describe how they themselves experienced the incidents. We find that while livestock farmers (...)

Handlung bei Schelling: zur Fundamentaltheorie von Praxis, Zeit und Religion im mittleren und späten Werk.Stefan Gerlach - 2019 - Frankfurt am Main: Vittorio Klostermann.
Throughout his philosophical work, Schelling came to increasingly emphasize his conviction that the ultimate principles of philosophy are essentially practical: the ego formally conceived as act in early philosophy, creation as the unfolding of structurally rich action in late philosophy. It remained unclear, however, exactly what constituted the practicality of these principles, namely which concept of action Schelling used and how it is being integrated into the totality of his system. The task this study sets itself is to investigate into (...)

    Dewey's Participatory Educational Democracy.Emil Višňovský & Štefan Zolcer - 2016 - Educational Theory 66 (1-2):55-71.
In this essay, Emil Višňovský and Štefan Zolcer outline John Dewey's contribution to democratic theory as presented in his 1916 classic Democracy and Education. The authors begin with a review of the general context of Dewey's conception of democracy, and then focus on particular democratic ideas and concepts as presented in Democracy and Education. This analysis emphasizes not so much the technical elaboration of these ideas and concepts as their philosophical framework and the meanings of democracy for education and education (...)

The paper enters into a polemical dialogue with the american theorist Jodi Dean and her attempts to critically examine the blogosphere through the prism of psychoanalysis. To this end, the text analyses whether user-generated content on the internet can produce meaningful and epistemologically sustainable “social enclaves”, informal communities and institutions, or whether it operates more as a series of recursive and increasingly meaningless quasi-messages. While attempting to consider blogging as both a constructive practice and a pathology, the text develops the (...)

Low-distortion embeddings of infinite metric spaces into the real line.Stefan Geschke - 2009 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 157 (2-3):148-160.
We present a proof of a Ramsey-type theorem for infinite metric spaces due to Matoušek. Then we show that for every K>1 every uncountable Polish space has a perfect subset that K-bi-Lipschitz embeds into the real line. Finally we study decompositions of infinite separable metric spaces into subsets that, for some K>1, K-bi-Lipschitz embed into the real line.

The number of openly generated Boolean algebras.Stefan Geschke & Saharon Shelah - 2008 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 73 (1):151-164.
This article is devoted to two different generalizations of projective Boolean algebras: openly generated Boolean algebras and tightly ϭ-filtered Boolean algebras. We show that for every uncountable regular cardinal κ there are 2κ pairwise non-isomorphic openly generated Boolean algebras of size κ > N1 provided there is an almost free non-free abelian group of size κ. The openly generated Boolean algebras constructed here are almost free. Moreover, for every infinite regular cardinal κ we construct 2κ pairwise non-isomorphic Boolean algebras of (...)

The integrative experiment design proposal currently only relates to group results, but downplays individual differences between participants, which may nevertheless be substantial enough to constitute a relevant dimension in the design space. Excluding the individual participant in the integrative design will not solve all problems mentioned in the target article, because averaging results may obscure the underlying mechanisms.

Esquisse de typologie de l’argumentation juridique.Stefan Goltzberg - 2008 - International Journal for the Semiotics of Law - Revue Internationale de Sémiotique Juridique 21 (4):363-375.

Stefan Goltzberg - 2013 - International Journal for the Semiotics of Law - Revue Internationale de Sémiotique Juridique 26 (3):543-554.

The Appreciative Perspective in Multicultural Relations.Stefan Cojocaru - 2005 - Journal for the Study of Religions and Ideologies 4 (10):36-48.
In this article, the principles of appreciative inquiry are used in order to mediate multicultural relations. Using the constructionism theory, I describe and analyze the theoretical articulations adopted to make sense of co-constructing the relationships between different people. I find that, instead of being applied as the sole theoretical foundation, constructionism principles have been incorporated in the appreciative inquiry principles, the effects of which should be the co-constructing of social reality by the interactions of different people. The paper draws on (...)

This article deals with aspects of the reception of the Liber pontificalis in the fifteenth century. The Liber pontificalis, an anonymous series of biographies of popes from St Peter onwards, was one of the principal sources for the Lives of the Popes by the humanist Platina. I address Platina’s use of sources and some of his attempts at historical criticism. The academic debate why and how companies are dealing with sustainability is dominated by two main arguments—the profit-seeking and the legitimacy-seeking view. While the first argues that companies establish sustainability management measures if this helps to increase their economic success, others emphasize that companies predominantly react on societal pressure dealing with sustainability to secure legitimacy. Whereas both lines of argument have gained a lot of attention in academia, little is known about their relative importance in shaping corporate practice. This papers (...)

In the past few decades, a growth in ethical consumerism has led brands to increasingly develop conscientiousness and depict ethical image at a corporate level. However, most of the research studying business ethics in the field of corporate brand management is either conceptual or has been empirically conducted in relation to goods/products contexts. This is surprising because corporate brands are more relevant in services contexts, because of the distinct nature of services and the key role that employees have in the (...)
