Christian Ethics in America (and the JRE): A Report on a Book I Will Not Write.Stanley Hauerwas - 1997 - Journal of Religious Ethics 25 (3):57 - 76.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, a remarkable change took place in advanced theological education in the United States: the study of Christian ethics (and other theological studies as well) moved quite rapidly from seminaries into graduate programs at religiously unaffiliated universities. The birth of the "Journal of Religious Ethics" should be understood in the context of this wider shift. The consequences of this migration have been, on the whole, regrettable. In universities, styles of analysis and metaethical issues have (...)

    Hans Kelsen's Doctrine of Imputation.Stanley L. Paulson - 2001 - Ratio Juris 14 (1):47-63.
First, the author examines the traditional doctrine of imputation. A look at the traditional doctrine is useful for establishing a point of departure in comparing Kelsen's doctrines of central and peripheral imputation. Second, the author turns to central imputation. Here Kelsen's doctrine follows the traditional doctrine in attributing liability or responsibility to the subject. Kelsen's legal subject, however, has been depersonalized and thus requires radical qualification. Third, the author takes up peripheral imputation, which is the main focus of the paper. (...)

Truthfulness and Tragedy: Further Investigations in Christian Ethics.Stanley Hauerwas, Richard Bondi & David B. Burrell - 1977 - University of Notre Dame Press.
In Truthfulness and Tragedy Stanley Hauerwas provides an account of moral existence and ethical rationality that shows how Christian convictions operate, or should operate, to form and direct lives. In attempting to conceptualize the basis of Christian ethics in a manner that will render Christian convictions morally intelligible, the author casts fresh light on traditional theoretical issues and articulates the distinctive Christian response to contemporary concerns such as suicide, medical ethics, and child care. The first section of the book (...)

Counterfactual Plausibility and Comparative Similarity.L. Stanley Matthew, W. Stewart Gregory & Brigard Felipe De - 2017 - Cognitive Science 41 (S5):1216-1228.
Counterfactual thinking involves imagining hypothetical alternatives to reality. Philosopher David Lewis argued that people estimate the subjective plausibility that a counterfactual event might have occurred by comparing an imagined possible world in which the counterfactual statement is true against the current, actual world in which the counterfactual statement is false. Accordingly, counterfactuals considered to be true in possible worlds comparatively more similar to ours are judged as more plausible than counterfactuals deemed true in possible worlds comparatively less similar. Although Lewis (...)

    C. Wright Mills.Stanley Aronowitz (ed.) - 2004 - Thousand Oaks, CA: SAGE.
C.Wright Mills (1917-63) was one of the great sociologists and leading public intellectuals of the last century. His contribution to the sociology of power elites, industrial relations, bureaucracy, social structure and personality, reformist and revolutionary politics and the sociological imagination are seminal. These three volumes, edited by one of America's most influential sociologists and cultural commentators, provides an unparalleled resource for understanding the intellectual relevance of Mill's writings. Mill's engagement with contemporary issues and his sociological vision emerge powerfully. The challenge (...)

Following Einstein's prediction of the gravitational bending of light, and in the course of experimental work aimed at its verification, only sporadic and at times misleading references have been made to Johann Georg von Soldner. In a paper published in 1804, Soldner derived the gravitational bending of light on the classical Newtonian basis and calculated its value around the sun with remarkable accuracy. Soldner's paper, inaccessible even in German, is now presented in English translation and put in the perspective of (...)

    On Unity, Liberty and Charity.Timothy Stanley - 2019 - Political Theology 20 (2):103-111.
Political theology has multiple provenances. One less cited is the seventeenth century irenic dictum: “and we would all embrace a mutual unity in things necessary; in things non necessary liberty; in all things charity.” While aimed at ecumenical peace, this call for mutual unity implied a deliberative context that went beyond sectarian Christian concerns. Liberty and charity were as conducive to a comprehensive church as more modest laws of toleration. My claim is that this dictum’s themes are extemporized in recent (...)

From Insulin and Insulin-Like Activity to the Insulin Superfamily of Growth-Promoting Peptides: A 20th-Century Odyssey.Stanley Blumenthal - 2010 - Perspectives in Biology and Medicine 53 (4):491-508.
In 1941, Gellhorn and colleagues reported experiments in which modest reductions of blood sugar were induced in hypophysectomized/adrenodemedullated (HA) rats by intraperitoneal injection of human blood. Based on the effects of intraperitoneal injections of known amounts of Lilly insulin on blood sugar in HA rats, Gellhorn estimated that the "insulin" content of normal human blood (collected two and a half hours "after luncheon") was 200uU/ml (Gellhorn, Feldman, and Allen 1941). However, discrepancies between measurements of plasma insulin concentration by in vitro (...)

    Is Epistemology Tainted?Jason Stanley - 2016 - Disputatio 8 (42):1-35.
Epistemic relativism comes in many forms, which have been much discussed in the last decade or so in analytic epistemology. My goal is to defend a version of epistemic relativism that sources the relativity in the metaphysics of epistemic properties and relations, most saliently knowledge. I contrast it with other relativist theses. I argue that the sort of metaphysical relativism about knowledge I favor does not threaten the objectivity of the epistemological domain.

Hobbes on Moral Obligation.Stanley Moore - 1971 - Journal of the History of Philosophy 9.
Hobbes lays down three requirements for harmonizing self-Interest with morality: the principles of rule-Egoism, Equal treatment, And reasonable security. Though he attempts to base all three principles upon prudential considerations, In the first two cases he does not succeed. His laws of nature are moral - as distinct from merely prudential - rules, Because these two principles function in his argument as moral imperatives in disguise.
