Why learn business ethics?—Students’ conceptions of the use and exchange value of applied business ethics.Sadanand Varma - 2019 - Asian Journal of Business Ethics 8 (1):107-125.
Applied Business Ethics is a core module for business undergraduate students in an internationalised university business degree programme from the United Kingdom taught at a Private Higher Education Institution in Singapore. Students, who are working adults undertaking this part-time degree, are assessed purely on the application of theoretical knowledge through essays that show evidence of their ability to apply theory in workplace ethical dilemmas. This pilot study explores the utility of the module in terms of use and exchange value. It (...)

Responsible Leadership and Reputation Management During a Crisis: The Cases of Delta and United Airlines.Tulika M. Varma - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 173 (1):29-45.
This study argues that actions taken during a crisis within the responsibility compass impacts reputation. The lens of responsible leadership was chosen from among the different foci of leadership scholarship because of its emphasis on relational and ethical dimensions. The focus of this study was the actions undertaken by the CEOs of United and Delta Airlines after the forceful removal of the passengers and its influence on the reputation capital as measured by the changes in the respective share prices of (...)

Studies on skilled return migration from developed to developing countries have focused on the industrial sector. This article focuses on why academic engineers and scientists from developing countries leave developed countries to return to their countries of birth. Data for this study comes from a National Science Foundation funded study with 83 engineers and scientists who returned to India after study and work in U.S. universities. Better career prospects in India namely ample funding available for research, less competition for grants, (...)

Diversity in clinical research: public health and social justice imperatives.Tanvee Varma, Camara P. Jones, Carol Oladele & Jennifer Miller - 2023 - Journal of Medical Ethics 49 (3):200-203.
It is well established that demographic representation in clinical research is important for understanding the safety and effectiveness of novel therapeutics and vaccines in diverse patient populations. In recent years, the National Institutes of Health and Food and Drug Administration have issued guidelines and recommendations for the inclusion of women, older adults, and racial and ethnic minorities in research. However, these guidelines fail to provide an adequate explanation of why racial and ethnic representation in clinical research is important. This article (...)

E.F. Schumacher: Changing the Paradigm of Bigger Is Better.Roli Varma - 2003 - Bulletin of Science, Technology and Society 23 (2):114-124.
In the mid-1970s, the phrase “small is beautiful” became a counterculture slogan against the industrial threat to the environment and the scarcity of resources. Arguing against excessive materialism and meaningless growth, the late Dr. Ernest Friedrich Schumacher—the author of Small Is Beautiful: Economics as if People Mattered, promoted the use of small-scale technology to benefit both humankind and the environment. As an economist trained in a market-oriented discipline, his thinking evolved from believing that large-scale technology could be salvation for industrial (...)

Women in Information Technology: A Case Study of Undergraduate Students in a Minority-Serving Institution.Roli Varma - 2002 - Bulletin of Science, Technology and Society 22 (4):274-282.
The issue of underrepresentation of women in information technology (IT) is of national interest due to the rapid growth of IT in recent years, the impact of IT on growth and productivity, the shortage of IT workers, and the gender equity in IT. Scholarly research has pointed its finger at bias in early socialization, math anxiety, masculinity of computers, the scarcity of role models, and women’s preference for relational work. A study of students majoring in computer science and computer engineering (...)

    Changing Research Cultures in U.S. Industry.Roli Varma - 2000 - Science, Technology, and Human Values 25 (4):395-416.
Changes brought by the rise of the global economy and the end of the Cold War era have resulted in industry, government, and university rethinking their roles vis-à-vis research and development, basic versus applied research, and the role of corporate research. Since the mid-1980s, industrial research in the United States has been going through restructuring. Interviews with seventy-two scientists and eighteen managers working in six centralized corporate R&D laboratories in high-technology industry show that a new culture of dependence with a (...)

  18. Criteria for the Design and Evaluation of Cognitive Architectures.Sashank Varma - 2011 - Cognitive Science 35 (7):1329-1351.
Cognitive architectures are unified theories of cognition that take the form of computational formalisms. They support computational models that collectively account for large numbers of empirical regularities using small numbers of computational mechanisms. Empirical coverage and parsimony are the most prominent criteria by which architectures are designed and evaluated, but they are not the only ones. This paper considers three additional criteria that have been comparatively undertheorized. (a) Successful architectures possess subjective and intersubjective meaning, making cognition comprehensible to individual cognitive (...)

Convergence or Divergence: Practice of Science by Migrant Faculty in India and the United States.Roli Varma & Meghna Sabharwal - 2017 - Science, Technology, and Human Values 42 (5):775-794.
Do immigrant faculty trained in American higher education institutions adopt the outlook and practices of native US scientists and engineers, or do they diverge from such practices? The modern science paradigm holds that location will not matter significantly and that immigrants in either place will converge to a common standard of scientific practice. Drawing upon 134 in-depth interviews, this paper compares the scientific practices of two groups of Indian immigrant faculty in science and engineering: those who studied and worked in (...)

Ruling Bodies: A Study of Coercion and Punishment in Plato's Republic, Laws, and Gorgias.Robin Varma - 2022 - Lanham, Maryland: Lexington Books.
This book examines how Plato theorized about coercion and punishment in the Republic, the Laws, and the Gorgias. It highlights a problem in the way we understand coercion in modern politics, and then offers a new framework and context for thinking about this.

Technology and Ethics for Engineering Students.Roli Varma - 2000 - Bulletin of Science, Technology and Society 20 (3):217-224.
Many engineering schools still do not allocate enough resources to the process of understanding the social and ethical dimensions of scientific and technological activities. This article argues that engineering curriculum in the United States should include courses that use theories and concepts from humanities and social sciences to study issues confronting the engineering profession. On the theoretical front, engineering students need to understand favorable and unfavorable consequences of technology-based progress, social and political qualities of technological designs, and the moral challenge (...)

A spontaneous neural replay account for involuntary autobiographical memories and déjà vu experiences.Mohith M. Varma & Rongjun Yu - 2023 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 46:e380.
Barzykowski and Moulin argue both involuntary autobiographical memories and déjà vu experiences rely on the same involuntary memory retrieval processes but their underlying neurological basis remains unclear. We propose spontaneous neural replay in the default mode network (DMN) and hippocampus as the basis for involuntary autobiographical memories, whereas for déjà vu experiences such transient activation is limited to the DMN.

Permanent Tenure and Academic Freedom in Engineering.Roli Varma - 2001 - Bulletin of Science, Technology and Society 21 (3):193-201.
The tenure system exists in most public and private universities and 4-year public colleges in the United States. The American Association of University Professors has argued that tenure provides the most reliable means of assuring academic freedom, faculty quality, and educational excellence. However, budgetary constraints and the end of mandatory retirement in the ’90s have resulted in questioning the merits of the tenure system. It is argued that tenure entrenches a lazy professoriate, encourages the creation of temporary faculty positions, and (...)

Touch in digitalized worlds: An introduction.Tuva Beyer Broch & Saiba Varma - 2024 - Anthropology of Consciousness 35 (2):136-149.
The English word digital (from the Latin, digitus) etymologically connects both fingers and technologies. In this special issue, we honor this dual meaning of the digital by foregrounding how living in a digital era both challenges and actualizes our senses, particularly our sense of touch. Ethnographically, the articles gathered offer intimate accounts of tactile experiences that intertwine with the digital in both direct and indirect ways. Despite ongoing—and often legitimate—anxieties about the disappearance of touch from our increasingly digitized world, our (...)

Purpose Online education can facilitate inclusive societal development. In emerging countries with low investment per capita in school and universities, it helps students overcome infrastructure constraints to continue their learning and reach their full potential, and it helps educational institutes to save costs and improve quality of learning. This study aims to develop and empirically evaluate a conceptual model for predicting digital loyalty (DL) among participants in online accounting courses, as a key lever to execute an inclusive societal development agenda (...)
