Es scheint, als wären wir ein halbes Jahrhundert lang an einem Denker vorbeigegangen, der uns zur Wissens- und Wissenschaftsproblematik mehr zu sagen hatte als mancher, den wir feiern. This volume provides Dilthey's most mature and best formulation of his Critique of Historical Reason. It begins with three "Studies Toward the Foundation of the Human Sciences," in which Dilthey refashions Husserlian concepts to describe the basic structures of consciousness relevant to historical understanding.The volume next presents the major 1910 work The Formation of the Historical World in the Human Sciences. Here Dilthey considers the degree to which carriers of history--individuals, cultures, institutions, and communities--can be articulated as productive systems capable (...) of generating value and meaning and of realizing purposes. Hegel's idea of objective spirit is reconceived in a more empirical form to designate the medium of commonality in which historical beings are immersed. Any universal claims about history need to be framed within the specific productive systems analyzed by the various human sciences. Dilthey's drafts for the Continuation of the Formation contain extensive discussions of the categories most important for our knowledge of historical life: meaning, value, purpose, time, and development. He also examines the contributions of autobiography to historical understanding and of biography to scientific history. The finest summary of Dilthey's views on hermeneutics can be found in "The Understanding of Other Persons and Their Manifestations of Life." Here, Dilthey differentiates understanding relative to three kinds of manifestations of life. After giving his analysis of elementary understanding, he examines the role of induction in higher understanding and interpretation, and the relevance of transposition and re-experiencing for grasping individuality. [Revised translation of a manuscript originally published in German in Zeitschrift fur Naturforschung 54a, 2--10 (1999) and dedicated to Georg Sussmann on the occasion of his seventieth birthday.] We discuss an ontological model suggested by quantum physics, in which the notion of events is of central significance. The conventional objects are considered as causal links between events. Localization in space-time refers primarily to events, not to objects. The intrinsic indeterminacy forces us to consider both possibilities and facts, corresponding to the (...) distinction between future and past. In presently existing theories, the definition of individual events and their localization properties depends on asymptotic arguments adapted to prevailing situations. (shrink)

Nicht willkürlich oder gar mutwillig wurde für die vorliegende Studie über die Philosophie Husserls ein Thema gewählt, das mit dem Titel von Heideggers Hauptwerk zu formulieren ist : Sein und Zeit. Verbreitet ist die Meinung, Husserl habe jederlei « Seinsfrage » durch sein Verfahren der « phänomenologischen Reduktion » eigens methodisch « ausgeschaltet » — und wenn es ein Beispiel für seine rein analytische Denk-und Arbeitsweise gebe, so seine deskriptive Phänomenologie des inneren Zeitbewußtseins. In Wirklichkeit ist die « Phänomenologische Fundamentalbetrachtung (...) » des Hauptwerkes unzweifelhaft eine « Seinsbetrachtung » und ist es ihre ausgesprochene Absicht, durch die phänomenologische Reduktion das « absolute Sein » zu « gewinnen » ; und ferner spricht Husserl es schon in den Ideen aus, daß das « letzte und wahrhaft Absolute » im transzendentalen Sinne über das Bewußtsein hinaus die « phänomenologische Zeit » sei, daß das transzendentale Bewußtsein seinerseits seine Absolutheit gleichsam in sich selbst aus einem ursprünglicheren « Urquell » schöpfe : dem der « lebendig strömenden Gegenwart », wie er später das « Urphänomen » der Zeit nennen wird. Übrigens hat Husserl nicht eigentlich Heideggers fundamentale Thesen in Sein und Zeit bestritten, ihnen vielmehr teilweise ausdrücklich zugestimmt, sondern vor allem ihm vorgeworfen, die Methode der phänomenologischen Reduktion zu ihrem Erweis und damit die Wissenschaftlichkeit überahupt preisgegeben zu haben. Allerdings läßt sich dann auch die eigentümliche Bedeutung von Husserls Lehre über Sein und Zeit nicht fassen, wenn seine Gedankengänge nicht dem eigenartigen Sinne ihrer Methode gemäß nach vollzogen werden. Husserls methodischer Grundgedanke ist geprägt durch das « originale Cartesianische Motiv : durch die Hölle einer nicht mehr zu übersteigernden quasi-skeptischen Epoché hindurch zum Eingangstor in den Himmel einer absolut rationalen Philosophie vorzudringen und diese selbst systematisch aufzubauen », m.a.w. : « den radikalen Subjektivismus der skeptischen Tradition in einem höheren Sinn wahrzumachen ». So führt der radikale cartesianische Zweifel — oder dessen Möglichkeit — zur Wahrheit der absoluten Gegebenheit des reinen Bewußtseins, die dessen absolutes Sein bedeutet. Damit ist ein ordo ad meam perceptionem als grundsätzlich gesicherter Bereich für eine strenge Wissenschaft gewonnen : die eidetische Phänomenologie des Bewußtseins. Auf analoge Weise und in demgemäß analogem Sinne ergibt sich Husserl sodann die grundsätzliche Relativität jeder möglichen Welt auf solches absolute Bewußtsein. Damit erweist sich, daß ein ordo ad ipsam rei veritatem sich, wenn überhaupt, einzig und allein in jenem ordo ad meam perceptionem zu konstituieren vermag : die reine Bewußtseinswissenschaft ist in sich schon transzendentale Phänomenologie. Und konstituiert sich nun wirklich im reinen Bewußtsein als dem transzendentalen ein solcher ordo ad ipsam rei veritatem ? Um dies zu erweisen, rekurrierte Descartes auf die veracitas Dei, die die Wahrheit des Evidenten verbürgen sollte. Husserl aber will unter « Evidenz » von vornherein nichts anders verstehen als die Selbstgegebenheit des Seienden selbst, das da evident ist. So fragt er, statt nach einer Garantie für die Wahrheit der Evidenz, vielmehr nach einer wahrhaft vollkommenen transzendentalen Evidenz. Sie muß gleichsam die Evidenz der Evidenz selbst sein. Sie erblickt er im Urphänomen der Zeit als der lebendig strömenden Gegenwart. (shrink)

It can be said that Formal Logic begun by studying an idealization of the statements ’if p, then q’, something coming from long ago in both Greek and Scholastic Philosophy. Nevertheless, only in the XX Century it arrived at a stage of formalization once in 1910 Russell introduced and identified the ’material conditional’ with the expresion ”not p or q”. In 1918, and from paradoxical conditionals like ”If the Moon is a cheese, it is a Lyon’s face”, Lewis critiziced the (...) material conditional and introduced the so-called ’strict conditional’ as the modal necessity of the material one. In 1934, Huntington proved that both material and strict implications are coincidental in the setting of Boolean algebras and, hence, that they only can be actually different in algebraic structures weaker than Boolean algebras. Boolean algebras have too much laws for supporting the difference of both conditionals. This paper is nothing else than an algebraic trial to find simple binary Boolean operations able to express Lewis’ strict implication, and contains a new and simpler proof than that of Huntington, made by identifying ’possible’ with ’non self-contradictory’. By the way, it is shown that this proof is only valid in Boolean algebras, but neither in proper De Morgan algebras, nor in proper Ortholattices, with which it still remains open where the two conditional relations are actually different. Two of the most brilliant German thinkers of the twentieth century were Karl Jaspers and Rudolf Bultmann. Jaspers, the philosopher, and Bultmann, the theologian, were both influenced by the philosophy of Martin Heidegger and the rise of the existentialist movement. Late in their careers they interacted on the subject of Bultmann's attempt to divest Christianity of its mythical components and make sense of it in more modern terms. This work is a compilation of articles by Jaspers and Bultmann that (...) formed a running debate originally published in various scholarly journals. The first half of the book is Jaspers' lengthy and critical analysis of Bultmann's interpretation of Christianity, in which Jaspers essentially rejects the premise that Christianity or any other religion can or should be understood without its mythical framework. Jaspers charges that Bultmann has radically misunderstood the nature of myth and that myth is an irreplaceable form of symbolic communication. In the second part, Bultmann defends his approach, suggesting that Jaspers has not really understood his intent or meaning. Contemporary people today, schooled in the scientific tradition, are likely to reject the biblical texts because of their miraculous claims and supernatural content. Bultmann insists that the scholarly, scientific study of the Bible is a legitimate way to reveal its true message, apart from all the supernatural trappings. Finally, in response, Jaspers accepts some of Bultmann's clarifications but takes him to task on the subject of justification by faith, which he feels Bultmann defines too narrowly and too exclusively. This stimulating work by two penetrating minds will give anyone interested in perennial philosophical and theological questions much to ponder. (shrink)
