Aimed at graduate students, research logicians and mathematicians, this much-awaited text covers over 40 years of work on relative classification theory for nonstandard models of arithmetic. The book covers basic isomorphism invariants: families of type realized in a model, lattices of elementary substructures and automorphism groups.

Various authors have argued that in the future not only will it be technically feasible for human minds to be transferred to other substrates, but this will become, for most humans, the preferred option over the current biological limitations. It has even been claimed that such a scenario is inevitable in order to solve the challenging, but imperative, multi-agent value alignment problem. In all these considerations, it has been overlooked that, in order to create a suitable environment for a particular (...) mind – for example, a personal universe in a computational substrate – numerous other potentially sentient beings will have to be created. These range from non-player characters to subroutines. This article analyzes the additional suffering and mind crimes that these scenarios might entail. We offer a partial solution to reduce the suffering by imposing on the transferred mind the perception of indicators to measure potential suffering in non-player characters. This approach can be seen as implementing literal empathy through enhanced cognition. (shrink)

We define certain properties of subsets of models of arithmetic related to their codability in end extensions and elementary end extensions. We characterize these properties using some more familiar notions concerning cuts in models of arithmetic.

Стаття присвячена тематизації механізмів інституційного запозичення. Розбудова системи державних інститутів України супроводжується значними запозиченнями з досвіду умпішних демократичних держав та міжнародних організацій. Цей процес характеризується перенесенням інституцій, що сформовані в межах однієї системи на «грунт» іншої. При цьому відбувається суттєва трансформація як самих інститутів (їх цілей та структур) так й характеру їх взаємодій з іншими інститутами. Фактично відбувається адаптація інституту до усталених комплексних зав’язків взаємоузгодженої системи.

Współcześnie próby systematyzowania sztuki na podstawie jej wartości zastępują raczej teorie opisowe, które stronią od jej ocen. Co więcej, refleksja postmodernistyczna, zmieniając swój stosunek do sztuki niskiej, skutecznie zatarła różnice w hierarchizacji walentnych treści sztuki. Wzmocnienie głoszonych w awangardzie programowych tez zmierzających do unieważnienia dotychczasowych kryteriów postaw oceniających wartość sztuki przyszło wraz z tzw. filozofią postmodernizmu. Założenia postmodernizmu ukazują wizję sztuki współczesnej, która osiągnęła kres swoich możliwości twórczych, innymi słowy nie ma współczesnej możliwości powiedzenia w sztuce czegoś nowego, co nie (...) będzie tylko cytatem, powtórzeniem, rekapitulacją tego, co już w sztuce było. Tego rodzaju hipoteza zakłada, że wyobraźnia ludzka jest zbiorem skończonych możliwości, a w procesie rozwoju kultury doszliśmy w czasach współczesnych do punktu, w którym wszystkie możliwe kombinacje zostały już wykorzystane. W tej sytuacji możemy albo przyjąć postawę zniechęcenia, albo sięgnąć do czasów minionych i wyselekcjonować poszczególne elementy, zestawiając je w eklektycznej kombinacji tak, aby nosiły znamiona nowości. Ale, aby przeprowadzić ten eklektyzm, który ma spełniać pozory nowości, trzeba wyjść od zwątpienia w kategorię racjonalnego rozumu, czyli braku wiary w naturalny porządek świata. Tylko wtedy głównym operatywem na gruncie kultury pozostanie wszechobecna ironia. I w tym duchu, zgodnie z założeniami postmodernizmu, należy czytać tzw. wielkie narracje historyczne, czyli systemy filozoficzne, religie, projekty społeczne czy też teorię sztuki. Obecne w historii narracje należy traktować jak wielkie literackie opowieści, które, być może, mają ciekawą fabułę, ale nie są prawdziwe i nie wychodzą poza zdawkowy komentarz. Katalog często stawianych hipotez wybranych i omówionych w artykule wskazuje na ich niejasną i często wadliwą konstrukcję. Nie oznacza to jednak niemożności stawiania pytań o wartościowanie na gruncie estetyki. Należy pamiętać, że pewne kwestie pozostają niezmienne w ocenie sztuki. Kryterium oceny dzieła sztuki uzyskane na podstawie cech empirycznych pozostaje niezmienne, a zatem to, co nazywamy kwestiami warsztatowymi, może przejść jako pierwsza przesłanka uznania, bądź nie, dzieła sztuki za wartościowe. Podobnie na bazie pewnej fikcji wizualnej urzeczywistniane są wartości, które nie są dostępne w świecie realnym, tym samym nie pełnią funkcji czystej repetycji doświadczenia ze świata realnego, więc mogą zaistnieć w świecie sztuki. Tym samym wartość sztuki może być mierzona skalą wprowadzenia do doświadczenia podmiotu poznającego czegoś, czego dotąd podmiot nie doświadczył. (shrink)

We study a strengthening of the notion of a perfectly meager set. We say that a subset A of a perfect Polish space X is countably perfectly meager in X, if for every sequence of perfect subsets $\{P_n: n \in \mathbb N\}$ of X, there exists an $F_\sigma $ -set F in X such that $A \subseteq F$ and $F\cap P_n$ is meager in $P_n$ for each n. We give various characterizations and examples of countably perfectly meager sets. The selection of ‘good’ pictures has increasingly become a crucial factor when transmitting news to the recipients. Every day thousands of events are happening and millions of pictures are taken. By choosing photographs for newspapers and magazines, photographic editorial departments want to attract the recipients' attention, evoke emotions and get them to read their stories. But what exactly is a good picture that meets these expectations? Which criteria are decisive for selecting pictures and what effects of this selection can be (...) measured on the recipients' side? This article presents the results of a research project carried out at the University of Erfurt in 2008 and conducted in collaboration with the German weekly magazine stern. It deals with the selection and impact of press photography by introducing the concept ‘photo news factors’. Applying the traditional news value theory to pictures, photo news factors are defined as selection criteria that, on the part of the communicator, decide whether the press photos are worth publishing. Furthermore, they are assumed to exert an influence on the intensity of attention that a picture arouses. (shrink)

Im zweiten Halbband der Formalontologie wird zunächst das Problem der Identität eines individuellen zeitlich bedingten Gegenstandes erörtert, sodann die Form eines Seinsgebiets und die Form der Welt betrachtet und schließlich, nach der vorbereitenden Analyse seines materialen Wesens, die Form des reinen Bewußtseins untersucht, das als Strom eines reinen Ichs kein Seinsgebiet, sondern ein individueller Gegenstand ist. Erst auf dieser Grundlage werden die möglichen existentialen Beziehungen zwischen dem reinen Bewußtsein und der realen Welt diskutiert. Dabei fällt neues Licht auf die eigentümliche (...) Verkoppelung der Frage nach der Existenz der Welt mit dem Problem des Verhältnisses von Leib, Seele und Bewußtsein. (shrink)
