  4. Stubborn distributivity, multiparticipant nouns and the count/mass distinction.Roger Schwarzschild - unknown
There are predicates that I call “stubbornly distributive” based on what happens when they are combined with plural count noun phrases. I will use these stubbornly distributive predicates to identify and analyze a certain subset of mass nouns which I call “multi-participant nouns”. Traffic and rubble are multi-participant nouns but furniture and luggage turn out not to be. Importantly, ‘typical’ mass nouns like water are multiparticipant nouns.

How physics confronts reality: Einstein was correct, but Bohr won the game.Roger G. Newton - 2009 - New Jersey: World Scientific.
This book recalls, for nonscientific readers, the history of quantum mechanics, the main points of its interpretation, and Einstein's objections to it, together with the responses engendered by his arguments. We point out that most popular discussions on the strange aspects of quantum mechanics ignore the fundamental fact that Einstein was correct in his insistence that the theory does not directly describe reality. While that fact does not remove these counterintuitive features, it casts them in a different light."--page vi.

  7. The Semantics of Comparatives and Other Degree Constructions.Roger Schwarzschild - unknown
    (1) is an example of an adjectival comparative. In it, the adjective important is flanked by more and a comparative clause headed by than. This article is a survey of recent ideas about the interpretation of comparatives, including (i) the underlying semantics based on the idea of a threshold; (ii) the interpretation of comparative clauses that include quantifiers (brighter than on many other days); (iii) remarks on differentials such as much in (1) above: what they do in the comparative and (...)

Empowering Our Military Conscience: Transforming Just War Theory and Military Moral Education.Roger Wertheimer (ed.) - 2010 - Ashgate.
Responding to increasing global anxiety over the ethics education of military personnel, this volume illustrates the depth, rigour and critical acuity of Professional Military Ethics Education (PMEE) with contributions by distinguished ethical theorists. It refreshes our thinking about the axioms of just war orthodoxy, the intellectual and political history of just war theorizing, and the justice of recent military doctrines and ventures. The volume also explores a neglected moral dimension of warfare, jus ante bellum (the ethics of pre-war practices) – (...)

    Living Chinese Philosophy.Roger T. Ames - 2015 - In T. Ames Roger (ed.). pp. 207-220.
The title of this essay, ›Living Chinese Philosophy‹ is a double entendre that captures the transformative nature of Chinese philosophy for those who study it, and the fact that it is a philosophical tradition taking the ordinary affairs of the day as both source of philosophical reflection and warrant for the conclusions reached. The goal of the canonical texts is not only to provide a vocabulary for thinking cogently about philosophical issues, but more importantly to encourage a personal cultivation directed (...)

Gentle regrets: thoughts from a life.Roger Scruton - 2005 - New York: Continuum.
Roger Scruton is Britain's best-known intellectual dissident, who has defended English traditions and English identity against an official culture of denigration. Although his writings on philosophical aesthetics have shown him to be a leading authority in the field, his defence of political conservatism has marked him out in academic circles as Public Enemy Number One. Contrary to orthodox opinion, however, Roger Scruton is a human being, and Gentle Regrets contains the proof of it - a quiet, witty but (...)

In dit opstel neemt Scruton stelling tegen het diep ingesleten nihilisme dat ook ons denken over kunst vergiftigt. De ontwikkeling die in gang werd gezet door Marcel Duchamps urinoir en leidde tot een aanhoudende stroom geschriften over de vraag wat kunst is, heeft ertoe geleid dat zo’n beetje alles voor kunst mag doorgaan, waarmee de kunst feitelijk haar zin verliest. Alles lijkt even belangrijk, Shakespeare of technorock. Scruton betoogt daarentegen dat we kunst moeten blijven onderwerpen aan een kritisch oordeel en (...)

I begin this paper by claiming that commentators who regard the Groundwork as Kant's final word on ethics inevitably misunderstand his moral theory. In support of this claim I focus on how Kant portrayed the role of inclinations in the morally virtuous life. A person who reads only the Groundwork will surely be struck by Kant's negative treatment of desires in that book: they are completely irrelevant to the rightness of our moral judgments, and the only specifically moral motive is (...)

  39. Moral Luck and Equality of Moral Opportunity.Roger Crisp - 2017 - Aristotelian Society Supplementary Volume 91 (1):1-20.
This paper concerns the problem of moral luck—the fact that our moral judgements appear to depend, perhaps unjustifiably, on matters of luck. The history and scope of the problem are discussed. It is suggested that our result-sensitive sentiments have their origin in views about moral pollution we might now wish to reject in favour of a volitionalist ethics.

  47. The Relation Between Value and Existence in the Philosophies of Nicolai Hartmann and Alfred North Whitehead.Roger Hazelton - 1937 - Dissertation, Yale University
We must therefore begin again from the metaphysical end of the main problem. We find in Whitehead's thought a picture of the kind of world in which value is possible, in which organic relatedness and continuity between diverse elements are made possible through "participation", through the agency of God. But we find that there is contradiction between his theory of value as atomic feeling and his whole metaphysics. True to our acceptance of "objectivity", we rather conceive value to be the (...)
