The Drake Relays: America's Athletic Classic.David Peterson - 2014 - University of Iowa Press.
The Drake Relays are one of the iconic events of track and field in the United States. World and Olympic champions test their speed and stamina on the famed Blue Oval in Des Moines, Iowa, every April, and by spring 2013 they had set fourteen world records and fifty-one American records. But unlike most other top meets, this one also features college athletes from all over the country and high school athletes from across Iowa, giving them the experience of (...)

Equitable relief as a relay between juridical and biopower: the case of school desegregation.Gordon Hull - 2016 - Continental Philosophy Review 50 (2):225-248.
The present paper looks at the intersection of juridical and biopower in the U.S. Supreme Court’s school desegregation cases. These cases generally deploy “equitable relief” as a relay between the juridicially-specified injury of segregation and the biopolitical mandates of integration, allowing broad-based biopolitical remedies for juridically identified problems. This strategy enabled the Courts to negotiate between these forms of power. The analysis here thus suggests the continued relevance of juridical power, and also the limits of Foucault’s own analysis, which suggested (...)

What is the social relay theory.Mikhail Rozov - 2017 - Epistemology and Philosophy of Science 51 (1):230-239.
The author claims that the social relay theory rose from the global problem of the mode of existence of semiotic objects (including knowledge). This problem is connected with the status of text in human studies and epistemology that is both the material phenomenon (sound oscillation, ink on paper) and something full of sense and meaning. Understanding of the text is determined by the reader’s inclusion into the world of social norms which is built upon the relay structures. The social relay (...)

How Mixed Relay Teams in Swimming Should Be Organized for International Championship Success.Santiago Veiga, Jesús Santos del Cerro, Luis Rodriguez, Alfonso Trinidad & José María González-Ravé - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
The primary goal of the present research was to determine the order of swimmers on a mixed relay team that would ensure the best performance in the Fédération Internationale de Natation World Championships held in Kazan, Budapest, and Gwangju. The data were obtained from database websites for the 4 × 100 m freestyle and 4 × 100 m medley official results,1 including 660 records from 188 entries of finals and 472 preliminary events. The results showed that the fastest swimmers were (...)

  11. Covert Communication for Wireless Networks with Full-Duplex Multiantenna Relay.Ling Yang, Weiwei Yang, Liang Tang, Liwei Tao, Xingbo Lu & Zhengyun He - 2022 - Complexity 2022:1-24.
In this work, we investigated a covert communication method in wireless networks, which is realized by multiantenna full-duplex single relay. In the first stage, the source node sends covert messages to the relay, and the relay uses a single antenna to send interference signals to the adversary node to protect the covert information being transmitted. In the second stage, the relay decodes and forwards the covert information received in the first stage; at the same time, the relay uses zero-forcing beamforming (...)

  12. Is Olfaction Really an Outlier? A Review of Anatomical and Functional Evidence for a Thalamic Relay and Top-down Processing in Olfactory Perception.William Seeley & Julie Self - manuscript
The olfactory system was traditionally thought to lack a thalamic relay to mediate top-down influences from memory and attention in other perceptual modalities. Olfactory perception was therefore often described as an outlier among perceptual modalities. It was argued as a result that olfaction was a canonical example of a direct perception. In this paper we review functional and anatomical evidence which demonstrates that olfaction depends on both direct pathway connecting anterior piriform cortex to orbitofrontal cortex and an indirect thalamic circuit (...)

A Three-Dimensional Autonomous System with a Parabolic Equilibrium: Dynamical Analysis, Adaptive Synchronization via Relay Coupling, and Applications to Steganography and Chaos Encryption.Janarthanan Ramadoss, Romanic Kengne, Dianorré Tokoue Ngatcha, Victor Kamdoum Tamba, Karthikeyan Rajagopal & Marceline Motchongom Tingue - 2022 - Complexity 2022:1-12.
This paper is reporting on electronic implementation of a three-dimensional autonomous system with infinite equilibrium point belonging to a parabola. Performance analysis of an adaptive synchronization via relay coupling and a hybrid steganography chaos encryption application are provided. Besides striking parabolic equilibrium, the proposed three-dimensional autonomous system also exhibits hidden chaotic oscillations as well as hidden chaotic bursting oscillations. Electronic implementation of the hidden chaotic behaviors is done to confirm their physical existence. A good qualitative agreement is shown between numerical (...)

But seriously: what do algorithms want? Implying collective intentionalities in algorithmic relays. A distributed cognition approach.Javier Toscano - 2022 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 73:47-76.
Describing an algorithm can provide a formalization of a specific process. However, different ways of conceptualizing algorithms foreground certain issues while obscuring others. This article attempts to define an algorithm in a broad sense as a cultural activity of key importance to make sense of socio-cognitive structures. It also attempts to develop a sharper account on the interaction between humans and tools, symbols and technologies. Rather than human or machine-centered analyses, I draw upon sociological and anthropological theories that underline social (...)
