This book provides an in-depth view of the current issues, problems and approaches in the computation of meaning as expressed in language. Aimed at linguists, computer scientists, and logicians with an interest in the computation of meaning, this book focuses on two main topics in recent research in computational semantics. The first topic is the definition and use of underspecified semantic representations, i.e. formal structures that represent part of the meaning of a linguistic object while leaving other parts unspecified. The (...) second topic discussed is semantic annotation. Annotated corpora have become an indispensable resource both for linguists and for developers of language and speech technology, especially when used in combination with machine learning methods. The annotation in corpora has only marginally addressed semantic information, however, since semantic annotation methodologies are still in their infancy. Cassirer stellt die alte Frage nach dem Wesen des Menschen neu und beantwortet sie, indem er die klassische Antwort mit weitreichenden Folgen abwandelt: Er bestimmt den Menschen als ein Wesen, das Symbole schafft und sich durch (...) Kant analiza el tema de la prudencia en contextos muy diferentes. Su antropología pragmática es una doctrina de la prudencia; un resumen de las lecciones sobre antropología impartidas desde 1772-1773 hasta 1795-1796 fueron publicadas en 1798. En su filosofía moral la prudencia aparece bajo aspectos muy diversos. En primer lugar es un oponente de la pura moralidad que trata de guiar la vida humana concediendo prioridad al imperativo categórico; sin embargo, por otro lado, supone un deber moral el cultivar la (...) prudencia como una facultad humana capaz de introducir cambios pragmáticos en nuestra vida. Y, en tercer lugar, la filosofía moral muestra la posibilidad de una convergencia entre moralidad y prudencia; cabe encontrar esto en la concepción kantiana del sumo bien en la ética y en la filosofía política, en la idea de que las acciones morales se mostrarán al volverse más prudentes. Otro aspecto relevante de la reflexión kantiana sobre la prudencia es el problema de la libertad; en la Crítica de la razón práctica, la ley moral es la condición necesaria y suficiente de la libertad; pero entonces se plantea la cuestión de si las acciones prudentes pueden ser libres O son meros productos de la determinación del sentido interno. Der Gesellschaftsvertrag, der Umschlagort von Naturzustand und Staat, ist paradox; er soll die völlige Freiheit der Menschen gewährleisten und dennoch aus ihnen ein gemeinsames Ich schaffen, der Mensch soll vorbehaltlos zum Bürger dieses einen Staates werden.. Das moderne Freiheitsideal wird in eine antike Polisgemeinschaft transplantiert. Die Interpretation der Schrift (...) wird dadurch erschwert, dass sie einerseits ein an eine gelehrte Tradition anknüpfender rechtsphilosophischer Traktat ist, andererseits ein politisches Pamphlet mit rhetorischen Überhöhungen. Die Aufsatzsammlung sucht den Ambivalenzen des Buches gerecht zu werden, sie liefert einen kooperativen Kommentar zu den Hauptthemen des Gesellschaftsvertrages. (shrink)

Die Bestimmung in der Klammer entspricht nicht der Kantischen Intention und wird dem einleitenden „also“ nicht gerecht. Die gesamte Argumentation des Geschmacksurteils ist so aufgebaut, dass der ästhetische Geschmack gegen zwei Fronten abgegrenzt wird, den Hedonismus und den Rationalismus ; der erste identifiziert den Geschmack mit einem Wohlgefallen am Angenehmen, also dem, „was den Sinnen (...) in der Empfindung gefällt“, der zweite mit dem, was „durch den bloßen Begriff gefällt.“ Das Schönheitsurteil steht zwischen sinnlicher Empfindung und bestimmtem Begriff; hierbei interessiert sich Kant verständlicherweise nicht für die Frage, wie die bloße Sinnesempfindung zu ihrer Artikulation in einem Urteil des Geschmacks z.B. in der Pariser Garküche kommt. In this paper it is shown how the DRT (Discourse Representation Theory) treatment of temporal anaphora can be formalized within a version of Montague Semantics that is based on classical type logic.

English summary: Was the moral philosophy of David Hume shaped by Chinese and Confucian influence? What evidence is there to support this, at the first view, bold thesis? Reinhard May first searches through his evidence for information relevant to the significance of Chinese thought in European philosophy from the end of the 16th to about the mid- 18th century. Hume also stood in this intellectual tradition, as countless of his references to China and Confucius show. Subsequently the core philosophical (...) content of Hume's early moral philosophical writings is compared with the Chinese body of thought in the form of the early version of the Mencius. The corresponding congruence of the moral philosophical positions of both is made graphically clear. The work of Reinhard May provides impressive clues for his initial suspicion: the moral philosophy of David Hume is based on substantial agreements with Chinese thought. The study of Hume is essentially enriched by this new thematic material. German description: Wurde die Moralphilosophie David Humes durch chinesische und confucianistische Einfluesse gepragt? The paper shows how ideas that explain the sense of an expression as a method or algorithm for finding its reference, preshadowed in Frege’s dictum that sense is the way in which a referent is given, can be formalized on the basis of the ideas in Thomason (1980). To this end, the function that sends propositions to truth values or sets of possible worlds in Thomason (1980) must be replaced by a relation and the meaning postulates governing the behaviour of (...) this relation must be given in the form of a logic program. The resulting system does not only throw light on the properties of sense and their relation to computation, but also shows circular behaviour if some ingredients of the Liar Paradox are added. The connection is natural, as algorithms can be inherently circular and the Liar is explained as expressing one of those. Many ideas in the present paper are closely related to those in Moschovakis (1994), but receive a considerably lighter formalization. (shrink)

The paper develops Lambda Grammars, a form of categorial grammar that, unlike other categorial formalisms, is non-directional. Linguistic signs are represented as sequences of lambda terms and are combined with the help of linear combinators.
