Les travaux de Patrice Bret occupent une place centrale en histoire des sciences et en histoire des techniques. Ce livre entend les mettre à l'honneur, qu'il s'agisse de l'histoire des savoirs académiques, du régime techno-politique du XVIIIe siècle, des interactions entre savants et praticiens à l'heure de la chimie lavoisienne, des circulations culturelles et des traductions ou encore de la place des femmes de sciences. Les contributions réunies dans ce volume illustrent, par leur diversité, l'influence de Patrice Bret (...) dans la communauté historienne. Nous proposons ainsi de mettre en perspective son oeuvre en la replaçant dans un contexte intellectuel, scientifique et épistémologique. Un constat s'impose : loin de distinguer entre les approches conceptuelles, érudites et méthodologiques, Patrice Bret joue un rôle de premier plan dans un milieu scientifique qui a choisi de conjuguer le renouvellement des questionnements avec la production d'instruments de recherche et les interrogations de repérage, de dénomination, d'identification, seules à même de contrer les récits téléologiques qui ont longtemps prévalu dans ce domaine. Si l'histoire des sciences et l'histoire des techniques sont de nos jours à l'avant-poste du renouvellement de la science historique, c'est aussi grâce au rôle de passeur de Patrice Bret. (shrink)

Ce livre propose de penser ce qui ne l'a encore jamais été. Il étudie d'abord avec rigueur et précision la genèse philosophique de la théorie du genre. Il montre que, par-delà Beauvoir, Sartre, Foucault et Derrida, la théorie dont Judith Butler est la plus célèbre représentante plonge ses toutes premières racines chez Platon lui-même. Tout se passe comme si la confusion des natures était une menace à l'oeuvre dès la naissance de la philosophie. Contre cette menace originaire et contre l'opinion (...) dominante de la modernité, il s'agit de comprendre de manière philosophique la profondeur morale et la vérité de la revendication grecque d'une pluralité des natures humaines intégrant la différence entre la féminité, l'esclavage et l'excellence. Dépassant cette conception ancienne, il s'agit notamment de comprendre ce que signifie la belle conception chrétienne de la féminité ainsi que ce que pourrait signifier la féminité comme nature suprême à savoir comme ce que Nietzsche appelait la sur-humanité. Il s'agit enfin ultimement de restaurer, en la comprenant de manière originale et nouvelle, la richesse de l'humanité. An adequate analysis of experiences and situations specific to women, especially mothering, requires consideration of women's difference. A focus on women's difference, however, jeopardizes feminism's claims of women's equal individualist subjectivity, and risks recuperating the inequality and oppression of women, especially the view that all women should be mothers, want to be mothers, and are most happy being mothers. This book considers how thinkers including Simone de Beauvoir, Julia Kristeva, Nancy Choderow and Adrienne Rich struggle to negotiate this dilemma of (...) difference in analyzing mothering, encompassing the paradoxes concerning embodiment, gender and representation they encounter. Patrice Di Quinzio shows that mothering has been and will continue to be an intractable problem for feminist theory itself, and suggests the political usefulness of an explicitly paradoxical politics of mothering. Cet article livre le témoignage d’une « biographe hospitalière » qui rencontre des patients malades, souvent en fin de vie, afin d’accompagner leur souhait de transmettre un écrit, lettres ou livre autobiographique. Les auteurs mettent en valeur la vertu cathartique de l’objet livre et engagent ensuite une réflexion sur les enjeux de cet accompagnement créateur pour le narrateur et sa famille et sur le statut particulier de l’écrit comme objet médiateur dans la transmission de la mémoire familiale. Ainsi, l’objet livre (...) peut notamment venir compenser le manque de ritualité autour de la mort à l’hôpital et apprivoiser l’idée de son proche décès, lui donner un sens, redonner à la personne malade un statut d’être de projet et de désir. Pour ceux qui restent, il est survivance de l’être aimé, trace d’une histoire singulière dans la mémoire collective, repère signifiant, ils devront s’approprier ce legs par des processus conscients ou inconscients d’identification qui impacteront leur construction identitaire. Résumé À travers le cas clinique d’une adolescente obèse, l’article postule que le corps « obèse » peut être l’espace d’expression de la conflictualité inter et transgénérationnelle. Le symptôme de l’obésité viendrait alors préserver l’homéostasie familiale. Cet écrit met le projecteur sur la dimension contenante de ce corps « encombrant », signifiant formel d’une enveloppe psychique porteuse de traces douloureuses appartenant au mémorial familial. This investigation of time and space is motivated by gaps in our current understanding: by the lack of definitions, by our failure to appreciate the nature of these entities, by our inability to pin down their properties. The author's approach is based on two key ideas: The first idea is to seek the geo-historical origins of time and space concepts. A thorough investigation of a diversified archaeological corpus, allows him to draft coherent definitions; it furthermore gives clues as to whether (...) time and space were discovered or invented. The second idea is to define the units before trying to define space and time. The results presented here are unexpected: Time and space were not discovered in nature, but they were invented; time is not a phenomenon and space has no materiality; they are only concepts. This runs contrary to the opinion of most scientific and the philosophical authorities, although one would seek in vain for a theoretical validation of the conventional position. This book will provide much food for thought for philosophers and scientists, as well as interested general readers. (shrink)

Accounts of mothering have both contributed to feminist theory's development and depended on certain of its central concepts. Some of its critics, however, argue that feminist theory is undermined by the problems of exclusion and essentialism. Here I distinguish between these two problems and consider their implications for questions about mothering. I conclude that exclusion and essentialism do not present insurmountable obstacles to theorizing motherhood, but do suggest new directions for such theorizing.

La premiere est representee par la recherche des causes physiologiques de l'harmonie musicale, conformement au titre de la conference que donne Helmholtz en 1857 (expose synthetique des idees qu'il reprendra dans sa tres fameuse Theorie physiologique de la musique), et par la presentation populaire pour les musiciens qu'en propose Enst Mach, des 1866. Avec Helmholtz, le son acquiert une place centrale pour la musique - le son tel qu'entendu par (...) l'oreille, avec toute sa richesse harmonique - et la dissonance, qui n'est plus un simple rate de la consonance, devient des lors la cle de toute theorie musicale. Mais qu'en est-il aujourd'hui de la theorie physiologique de Helmholtz? Son examen par Patrice Bailhache, a l'aune de l'acoustique actuelle, forme la seconde ligne de force du present livre. Et la troisieme, retenue par Antonia Soulez, est celle tracee par Carl Dalhaus, qui en 1970, voit dans la demarche de Helmholtz une mise en question inaugurale de la naturalite d'un systeme de sons. C'est la musique qui, alors, questionne la science: quelle pertinence ces considerations sur la dissonance et ses causes, conservent-elles face au regne du timbre et de la dissonance depuis la musique atonale et le dodecaphonisme? This article aims to make two points. First, seeking and granting recognition is an ambivalent process that may lead to results completely the opposite from what was intended. Certain social pathologies, including reification, develop because of the way the desire for recognition is expressed and satisfied. Nevertheless, the concept of recognition remains central to critical theory. A normative concept of recognition is needed in order to identify these pathologies. Second, a critical theory of society that understands itself as praxis must (...) justify the possibility of its ‘reception’ by members of society. The theory’s addressees must ‘recognize themselves’ in the theory. They must recognize in it the conceptual expression of their own experience of society. Therefore, social theory must account for the emergence of a critical standpoint on society. These two main points are addressed by means of a ‘dialectical’ approach. The tensions and interactions between global society, states, and value-communities – the dialectic within and between these spheres – account for the diverse and conflicting meanings of the concept of recognition. At the same time, such a dialectic makes it possible to understand the emergence of a critical viewpoint on society. (shrink)

In this paper, I evaluate recently defended mechanistic accounts of the unity of neuroscience from a metaphysical point of view. Considering the mechanistic framework in general , I argue that explanations of this kind are essentially reductive . The reductive character of mechanistic explanations provides a sufficiency criterion, according to which the mechanism underlying a certain phenomenon is sufficient for the latter. Thus, the concept of supervenience can be used in order to describe the relation between mechanisms and phenomena . (...) Against this background, I show that the mechanistic framework is subject to the causal exclusion problem and faces the classical metaphysical options when it comes to the relations obtaining between different levels of mechanisms . Finally, an attempt to improve the metaphysics of mechanisms is made and further difficulties are pointed out. (shrink)

Celem pracy jest analiza związków zachodzących między logikami deontycznymi i logikami czasowymi. Punktem wyjścia są znane relacje pojęć modalnych, deontycznych i czasowych. Część I ma charakter wstępny. W części II autor stara się udzielić wyczerpującej odpowiedzi na pytanie, który spośród znanych rodzajów logiki czasu nadaje się do zamierzonej analizy. Wybór pada na logikę dat (temporal logic). Dalej, w części III przedyskutowano trzy możliwe sposoby wiązania pojęć modalnych z pojęciami czasowymi - koncepcje: Diodora Cronosa, szkoły megaryjskiej i W.Occama. Okazało się, że (...) związki modalno-czasowe i deontyczno- czasowe dają się najpełniej wyrazić w obrębie koncepcji occamowskiej - w takich strukturach semantycznych wszystkie trzy rodzaje pojęć dają się dosyć naturalnie powiązać. Część IV jest prezentacją zbudowanego na "occamowski” sposób systemu modalno-deontyczno-czasowego. Na koniec znajdujemy jeszcze dyskusję trudności na jakie napotyka się przy konstruowaniu takich hybrydowych systemów logicznych i przykład ilustrujący zalety tych konstrukcji, w przykładzie posłużono się znanym paradoksem "dobrego Samarytanina". This paper aims at specifying the complex links which two major and polemically related 18th-century linguistic theories James Harris' universal grammar in Hermes (1751) and John Horne Tooke's system of etymology in the Diversions of Purley (1786, 1804) bear to empiricism. It describes both the ideologicalethical determining factors of the theories and the epistemological consequences dependent upon their respective philosophical orientation (Harris using classical Greek philosophy against empiricism, Tooke criticizing Locke's semantics along Hobbesian lines). The effects within the linguistic theories (...) are examined through a comparison of the theories of determination which follow from divergent theses concerning abstraction. The analysis proposed in this paper exemplifies once more the historical question of the exact location of the compatibility/incompatibility between empiricist and non-empiricist linguistic theories. Each of them provides specific insights into highly complex phenomena. Different disciplines, but also different traditions in disciplines (e.g. analytical and continental traditions in philosophy) find here a rare occasion to meet. The present book contains contributions, both historical and thematic, from leading researchers in several of the most important approaches to legal rationality. Μια λεπτομέρεια της διατύπωσης επιτρέπει να υποθέσουμε ότι το ψήφισμα προέρχεται από την Πάρο και να προτείνουμε νέες αποκαταστάσεις. Το εν λόγω πρόσωπο, πολίτης της Θάσου, θα είχε διαμείνει στην Πάρο και θα είχε δώσει διαλέξεις σχετικά με τη συγγένεια των δύο πόλεων (...) στο γυμνάσιο. Η διαμονή του θα πρέπει να συσχετιστεί με τη δημιουργία της ανάμνησης του Αρχιλόχου, που προκάλεσε έντονη ιστοριογραφική δραστηριότητα στην Πάρο της ύστερης ελληνιστικής εποχής. (shrink)

La comparaison entre Les Formes élémentaires de la vie religieuse de Durkheim et le Cours de linguistique générale (CLG) fait apparaître la fameuse critique adressée par Lévi-Strauss à la tradition sociologique française à front renversé : que fait en effet Durkheim dans ce texte sinon « chercher une origine symbolique de la société »? Inversement, Saussure ne dit-il pas de son côté que la langue n’existe que comme « fait social » ou « dans la collectivité »? Cet article montre (...) que, bien qu’ils partagent le même nouage intime entre ces deux propositions, « le signe est social » et « le social est réel », Durkheim et Saussure ont des notions diamétralement opposées du symbolique et du social, et même de ce qu’être veut dire. Matériel, extérieur, identique pour tous selon Durkheim, le signe peut représenter la transcendance et l’unité de la réalité collective. Mais la révolution saussurienne commence avec la découverte que le signe linguistique lui-même (et pas seulement le sens) est « incorporel », spirituel, toujours en variation, et s’achève par l’affirmation de son être « de masse », en passant par la construction d’un concept radicalement nouveau : celui d’« institution pure ». The paper argues that a functional reduction of ordinary psychology to neuropsychology is possible by means of constructing fine-grained functional, mental sub-types that are coextensive with neuropsychological types. We establish this claim by means of considering as examples the cases of the disconnection syndrome and schizophrenia. We point out that the result is a conservative reduction, vindicating the scientific quality of the mental types of ordinary psychology by systematically linking them with neuroscience. That procedure of conservative reduction by means of (...) functional sub-types is in principle repeatable down to molecular neuroscience. (shrink)

Authors sometimes treat the promise of de-extinction as a forgone conclusion. But if we take Kasperbauer’s approach and assess the moral acceptability of de-extinction by weighting benefits to species against the suffering of individuals, the promise of de-extinction deserves greater critical attention. Accepting de-extinct individuals as replacements for extinct predecessors assumes species are separate from environment and can be reduced to DNA. In this response to Kasperbauer’s essay, I examine how the acceptability of de-extinction might shift if we instead view (...) species as the persistence of processes—the successful know-how of living in relation to other unfolding processes. On an internalist account of logical inference, we are warranted in drawing conclusions from accepted premises on the basis of our knowledge of logical laws. Lewis Carroll's regress challenges internalism by purporting to show that this kind of warrant cannot ground the move from premises to conclusion. Carroll's regress vindicates a repudiation of internalism and leads to the espousal of a standpoint that regards our inferential practice as not being grounded on our knowledge of logical laws. Such a standpoint can (...) take two forms. One can adopt either a broadly externalist model of inference or a sceptical stance. I will attempt, in what follows, to defend a version of internalism which is not affected by the regress. The main strategy will be to show that externalism and scepticism are not satisfying standpoints to adopt with regard to our inferential practice, and then to suggest an internalist alternative. The concept of ‘problem’ has been recently promoted by the official academic institutions and put at the centre of a new field of research, self-styled ‘transdisciplinary studies’, in order to provide a foundation to a resolutely transdisciplinary approach to research and thought in general. The paper notes that the same move (i.e. connecting a problem-centred approach to thought with transdisciplinary method) can be found in Deleuze’s philosophy, which provides us with what the technocratic image of thought advocated by transdisciplinary studies (...) ultimately cannot provide: a positive concept of problems where those are not negative moments but originary and active matrices of thought. It then argues that Deleuze owes this concept to the French epistemological tradition, and more specifically to Bachelard, where it is nothing other than the concept of structure. It ends by explicating what particular version of structuralism Deleuze was thus led to construct in order to account for the role of problems in a radically transdisciplinary account of thought: it is the fact that all structures are multi-structured that grounds the essentially transdisciplinary nature of thought.
