What promised to be a refreshing addition to cumulative cultural evolution, by moving the focus from cultural transmission to technological innovation, falls flat through a lack of thoroughness, explanatory power, and data. A comprehensive theory of cumulative cultural change must carefully integrate all existing evidence in a cohesive multi-level account. We argue that the manuscript fails to do so convincingly.

The intrinsic merit of Northoff's model lies primarily in the fact that it integrates data concerned with different levels of organization of the brain. This approach implicitly argues against reductionism, although, apparently, its rather simplistic assumption gives too many degrees of freedom. In considering that a symptom from two different syndromes indicates a common neural alteration, we grossly disregard neural plasticity.

Recent theories have argued that emotions play a central role in moral decision-making and suggested that emotion regulation may be crucial in reducing emotion-linked biases. The present studies focused on the influence of emotional experience and individual differences in emotion regulation on moral choice in dilemmas that pit harming another person against social welfare. During these “harm to save” moral dilemmas, participants experienced mostly fear and sadness but also other emotions such as compassion, guilt, anger, disgust, regret and contempt (Study (...) 1). Fear and disgust were more frequently reported when participants made deontological choices, whereas regret was more frequently reported when participants made utilitarian choices. In addition, habitual reappraisal negatively predicted deontological choices, and this effect was significantly carried through emotional arousal (Study 2). Individual differences in the habitual use of other emotion regulation strategies (i.e., acceptance, rumination and catastrophising) did not influence moral choice. The results of the present studies indicate that negative emotions are commonly experienced during “harm to save” moral dilemmas, and they are associated with a deontological bias. By efficiently reducing emotional arousal, reappraisal can attenuate the emotion-linked deontological bias in moral choice. (shrink)

We translate unconstrained and constrained input/output logics as introduced by Makinson and van der Torre to modal logics, using adaptive logics for the constrained case. The resulting reformulation has some additional benefits. First, we obtain a proof-theoretic characterization of input/output logics. Second, we demonstrate that our framework naturally gives rise to useful variants and allows to express important notions that go beyond the expressive means of input/output logics, such as violations and sanctions.

Bu çalışma, Bataille’ın temel materyalizm kavramı aracılığıyla göç olgusu ve klasik materyalizmin indirgemeci yaklaşımları arasındaki ilişkiyi araştırmaktadır. Bataille’ın _formsuz _madde anlayışı, klasik materyalizmin kavramsal idealizmine karşı çıkarak, madde teriminin bayağılık ve aşağılık anlamlarını ön plana çıkarır. Bu yaklaşım, göçün toplumsal bir tehdit olarak değil, homojen kültürün ayrılmaz bir parçası olarak yeniden değerlendirilmesine olanak tanır. Bu çalışma, Bataille’ın homojen ve heterojen kavram çiftleri üzerine inşa edilerek, ulus-devlet ve göç arasındaki ilişkiyi politik açıdan yeniden düşünmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmanın amacı maddeyi pasif ve indirgemeci (...) bir biçimde ele alan klasik materyalist görüşler ile göç olgusunun ele alınışı arasındaki paralelliği inceleyerek, göçün sadece bir problem olarak değil, toplumların yapı taşlarından biri olarak anlaşılması gerektiğini vurgulamaktır. Bataille’ın materyalizm eleştirisi, maddenin formsuz ve bayağı özellikleriyle ele alındığında, göç hakkında yeni bir bakış açısı sunar. Bu bakış açısı, göçü dışsal bir tehdit olarak değil, homojen kültürler içinde temel bir tepki olarak tanıma imkânı sağlar. Çalışma, bu yaklaşımın, göç hareketlerinin daha derinlemesine anlaşılmasına katkıda bulunacağını ve onların toplumları şekillendirmedeki temel rolünü vurgulayacağını iddia etmektedir. Bataille’ın düşünceleri aracılığıyla, bu araştırma, klasik materyalizmin indirgemeci görüşlerini sorgulamakta ve göçü daha incelikli bir perspektiften ele almayı önermektedir. In this article, we present an argumentative approach to normative reasoning. Special attention is paid to deontic conflicts, contrary-to-duty and specificity cases, which are modelled by means of argumentative attacks. For this, we adopt a recently proposed framework for logical argumentation in which arguments are generated by a sequent calculus of a given base logic of Argument & Computation ), and use standard deontic logic as our base logic. Argumentative attacks are realized by elimination rules that allow to discharge specific (...) sequents. We demonstrate the usefulness of our approach by means of various well-known benchmark examples, and show that this approach is rich enough to capture a variety of paradigms for handling conflicting norms such as reasoning with maximally consistent sets, prioritized norms and deontic formalisms based on I/O logic. Donald Davidson denied convention any interesting role in the philosophical theory of meaning: Conventions are neither necessary nor sufficient to account for communication by language. This anticonventionalism is part of Davidson's more general individualism about meaning. According to Davidson, notions such as that of a shared language, shared practices of use, and the attendant notions of standard meaning and linguistic mistake, are as uninteresting to the philosophical theory of meaning as that of convention. The chapter starts with a sketch of (...) the meaning theoretical background for Davidson's anticonventionalism, arguing that Davidson ultimately motivates both anti‐conventionalism and individualism by the social or public nature of language. After quickly taking up Davidson's arguments against attempts to conventionally link semantics to nonsemantic purposes, the chapter then focuses on his attack on the idea that literal meaning is conventional meaning and the surrounding discussion.
