Recent experimental studies indicate that epistemically irrelevant factors can skew our intuitions, and that some degree of scepticism about appealing to intuition in philosophy is warranted. In response, some have claimed that philosophers are experts in such a way as to vindicate their reliance on intuitions—this has become known as the ‘expertise defence’. This paper explores the viability of the expertise defence, and suggests that it can be partially vindicated. Arguing that extant discussion is problematically imprecise, we will finesse the (...) notion of ‘philosophical expertise’ in order to better reflect the complex reality of the different practices involved in philosophical inquiry. On this basis, we offer a new version of the expertise defence that allows for distinct types of philosophical expertise. The upshot of our approach is that wholesale vindications or rejections of the expertise defence are shown to be unwarranted; we must instead turn to local, piecemeal investigations of philosophical expertise. Lastly, in the spirit of taking our own advice, we exemplify how recent developments from experimental philosophy lend themselves to this approach, and can empirically support one instance of a successful expertise defence. En este artículo se presenta una interpretación de la crítica de la economía política de Marx como teoría filosófica: una teoría de la apariencia que tiene sus raíces en la intervención kantiana en la historia de la metafísica. En primer lugar, se presenta el proyecto de la crítica de la economía política como una crítica de la “apariencia real” “objetiva” [ realer, gegenständlicher Schein ]. A continuación, se apunta a fetichismo y mistificación como las categorías centrales de esta teoría de (...) la apariencia marxiana. Después se precisa su origen y posibilidad en el espacio filosófico abierto por Kant y Hegel, que sientan las bases de una teoría de la apariencia propiamente moderna. Finalmente, se profundiza en esta relación entre Marx y Kant mostrando que es posible clarificar tanto las diferencias como los contenidos del fetichismo y la mistificación al hilo de las dos clases de apariencia pensadas por Kant -según la distinción de Lebrun-, “apariencia lógica” y “apariencia trascendental”. Higher-order thought theories of consciousness attempt to explain what it takes for a mental state to be conscious, rather than unconscious, by means of a HOT that represents oneself as being in the state in question. Rosenthal Consciousness and the self: new essays, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2011) stresses that the way we are aware of our own conscious states requires essentially indexical self-reference. The challenge for defenders of HOT theories is to show that there is a way to explain (...) the required reference-fixing mechanisms that is compatible with the theory. According to Rosenthal, the reference to oneself as such is grounded in the disposition to identify the individual the HOT refers to as the individual who has that HOT. I argue that this leads to a vicious infinite regress on the more than plausible assumption that our cognitive capacities are limited. This leaves such theories without a foundation, since self-reference is thought essential to consciousness. (shrink)

Nos proponemos abordar la tesis de la segunda antinomia. Primero, intentaremos demostrar que la tesis y su prueba sólo pueden versar sobre partes simples materiales de cuerpos extensos en el espacio, y no sobre sustancias simples inmateriales. En segundo lugar, intentaremos demostrar que en la tesis y su prueba intervienen una síntesis categorial y una síntesis empírica correspondientes a la categoría de cualidad, lo que conduce a afirmar que la prueba no procede por meros conceptos, sino que introduce cierta referencia (...) a la intuición. Dicha referencia será explicada a través de la síntesis empírica de realidad y confirmara que la tesis se refiere a partes simples corpóreas. (shrink)

La relación entre máxima lógica y principio sintético de la razón pura ocupa un lugar fundamental en la "Dialéctica trascendental". Esto se nota en la formulación de los problemas que la Dialéctica se propone abordar, pues hace una referencia explícita al pasaje de la máxima al principio mencionado ; sin embargo, Kant no explica cómo se haría tal pasaje. Aquí se propone una explicación de dicho pasaje a través de un estudio pormenorizado de la premisa mayor del silogismo cosmológico, donde (...) éste ocupa un lugar fundamental. se sostendrá que tal pasaje sólo es comprensible suponiendo una máxima lógica restringida que permita deducir legítimamente, para el caso de la lógica general, lo incondicionado dado a partir de lo condicionado dado. El principio trascendente será una pretendida extensión de esta máxima a las cosas en sí. The relationship between the logical maxim and the synthetic principle of pure reason plays an important role in the "Transcendental Dialectic". This is apparent by noting that the formulation of the problems treated in the Dialectic has an explicit reference to the transition from the maxim to the principle . Nevertheless, Kant doesn't explain how this transition is made. I intend to explain this transition through a detailed study of the major premise of the cosmological syllogism, where it has an important role. I claim that this passage is understandable only by assuming a restricted logical maxim that allows inferring legitimately the unconditioned given from the conditioned given. The transcendental principle will be an extension of this maxim to things in self. (shrink)

Con ocasión de la refutación de una interpretación reciente del pensamiento de Anthony Collins, fundada en presupuestos metodológicos erráticos y tributarios, en definitiva, de la concepción propia de los apologistas en tiempos de las Luces, este trabajo denuncia los abusos en la historiografía de los tiempos modernos de una mal llamada lectura entre líneas, que implica no el examen detenido del texto en su complejidad, sino el menosprecio de la letra, y propone criterios que faciliten un tratamiento en clave propiamente (...) histórica de categorías como deísmo, panteísmo y ateísmo, lejos de la pretensión de una determinada filosofía de trabajar sobre «conceptos rigurosos y perfectamente definidos», portadores de esencias. Built upon two opposing forces, it has collapsed after various centuries of development. Modernism is thus called to heroism and must regenerate, availing itself of its best of qualities: critical thinking, reflection and rational dialogue.

En este artículo, quiero examinar el juicio que el filósofo colombiano realiza de España y del mundo hispánico en su obra. De su consideración completamente negativa sobre este legado cultural, se pueden extraer dos consecuencias. Por una parte, su hispanofobia lo alejaría de la tradición reaccionaria hispanoamericana. Sin embargo, por otra parte, su identificación entre cultura española e hispanoamericana lo acercaría de nuevo –si bien con renovada complejidad– a la identidad reaccionaria canónica.

Is Machiavelli an Epicurean in his political and religious thought? Recent scholarship has identified him as the foremost representative of Epicureanism in Renaissance Florence. In particular, his incomplete epic poem, The Ass, is read as an expression of his adherence to Lucretian naturalism. This article offers a new reading of the poem and shows that its teaching reveals that Machiavelli is closer to a Platonic variant of classical naturalism linked with the idea of a natural virtue modelled on the lives (...) of animals which has been lost through human civilization and progress and to which it is necessary to return periodically. The article focuses on the poem’s claim that civil religion is a necessary component for good laws that maintain a free republic and argues that Machiavelli offers a poetic reflection on the role of Numa as the founder of Roman religion on the model of a neo-Pythagorean philosophical religion that was instrumental in the rise of constitutional government. More than Lucretius’s critique of religion, Machiavelli’s poem can be read as an extended reflection on Plutarch’s texts – above all, his Life of Numa. (shrink)

Animal replaceability is supposed to be a feature of some consequentialist theories, like Utilitarianism. Roughly, an animal is replaceable if it is permissible to kill it because the disvalue thereby caused will be compensated by the value of a new animal’s life. This is specially troubling since the conditions for such compensation seem easily attainable by improved forms of raising and killing animals. Thus, grounding a strong moral status of animals in such theories is somewhat compromised. As is, consequently, their (...) position as an alternative to rights-based theories in animal ethics. Recognising this, some utilitarians tried to disassociate utilitarianism and replaceability. I will here add my voice to this project. However, instead of seeing the culprit in the usual suspects (hedonism, maximisation or the total view), I advance a new proposal. After identifying that the compensating value for a disvaluable action has to be its consequence, I present a restriction on consequences: consequences of sequences of actions cannot be consequences of the isolated actions in the sequences. Given this, the main argument is simple: killing an animal is permissible only if the the value of the new animal’s life is a consequence of the killing; but this value is a consequence of a sequence of actions which involves the killing plus some additional actions; therefore, since, via the restriction, such value is not a consequence of the killing, it is irrelevant to its normative status. I then present two further motivations for the restriction: firstly, it prevents the value of conditional actions from trivially influencing the value of the actions on which they are conditional; secondly, it is useful – even if not a complete solution – to reply other objections to consequentialism: the accordion effect of action and the cluelessness problem. El contexto de crisis y restricciones presupuestarias sirve de pretexto para promover en la Comunidad de Madrid la implantación de un modelo dual de gestión de los centros y servicios sanitarios, ampliamente contestado en la calle por profesionales sanitarios, asociaciones, pacientes y usuarios. Este proceso se inicia sin evidencia científico-técnica que avale las presuntas ventajas del modelo de concesión y carece de una evaluación solvente de impacto sanitario, conforme a estándares de transparencia, rendición de cuentas y calidad democrática. Entre los (...) aspectos éticos y jurídicos involucrados en este debate analizo los relacionados con el conflicto de intereses y las evidencias recientes que desaconsejan adoptar en España modelos similares. Tras analizar el desafío que supone el nuevo marco institucional para el ejercicio de la responsabilidad profesional conforme a criterios de equidad y buenas prácticas, se concluye aportando elementos para generar un marco más equilibrado de reformas. The non-transitivity of the relation looks the same as has been used to argue that the relation has the same phenomenal character as is non-transitive—a result that jeopardizes certain theories of consciousness. In this paper, I argue against this conclusion while granting the premise by dissociating lookings and phenomenology; an idea that some might find counter-intuitive. However, such an intuition is left unsupported once phenomenology and cognitive access are distinguished from each other; a distinction that is conceptually and empirically grounded.

La réflexion autour de cette question est guidée par la conviction selon laquelle le renouvellement du naturalisme est aujourd'hui la tâche la plus significative, mais aussi la plus difficile, de la philosophie et de la science. Cet essai développe une alternative à deux attitudes : l'identification de la nature aux seuls contenus des sciences naturelles, et, par conséquent l'abandon de vastes secteurs du monde, notamment ceux de la vie et du comportement conscient, aux non naturalistes. (...) A rebours de cela, ce texte est une contribution à un naturalisme intégral repensé. Ce qui est à repenser, ce n'est rien de moins que les fondements métaphysiques et épistémologiques du naturalisme pour qu'aucune entité, aucun processus et aucune expérience ne reste en dehors de la recherche d'intelligibilité.
