Earlier in this century, many philosophers of science (for example, Rudolf Carnap) drew a fairly sharp distinction between theory and observation, between theoretical terms like 'mass' and 'electron', and observation terms like 'measures three meters in length' and 'is _2° Celsius'. By simply looking at our instruments we can ascertain what numbers our measurements yield. Creatures like mass are different: we determine mass by calculation; we never directly observe a mass. Nor an electron: this term is introduced in order to (...) explain what we observe. This (once standard) distinction between theory and observation was eventually found to be wanting. First, if the distinction holds, it is difficult to see what can characterize the relationship between theory :md observation. How can theoretical terms explain that which is itself in no way theorized? The second point leads out of the first: are not the instruments that provide us with observational material themselves creatures of theory? Is it really possible to have an observation language that is entirely barren of theory? The theory-Iadenness of observation languages is now an accept ed feature of the logic of science. Many regard such dependence of observation on theory as a virtue. If our instruments of observation do not derive their meaning from theories, whence comes that meaning? Surely - in science - we have nothing else but theories to tell us what to try to observe. (shrink)

Die Anthropologie schliesslich sucht anzugeben, was den Menschen jenseits seiner Geschichte ausmacht. Der unhistorische Charakter der Anthropologie einerseits sowie das unvollstandige Menschenbild traditioneller Geschichtsphilosophien andererseits schienen eine gegenseitige Verstandigung bislang auszuschliessen.Die Psychoanalyse, an der Schnittstelle von Natur- und (...) With a few notable exceptions formal semantics, as it originated from the seminal work of Richard Montague, Donald Davidson, Max Cresswell, David Lewis and others, in the late sixties and early seventies of the previous century, does not consider Wittgenstein as one of its ancestors. That honour is bestowed on Frege, Tarski, Carnap. And so it has been in later developments. Most introductions to the subject will refer to Frege and Tarski (Carnap less frequently) —in addition to the pioneers just (...) mentioned, of course— , and discuss the main elements of their work that helped shape formal semantics in some detail. But Wittgenstein is conspicuously absent whenever the history of the subject is mentioned (usually briefly, if at all). Of course, if one thinks of Wittgenstein’s later work, this is obvious: nothing, it seems, could be more antithetic to what formal semantics aims for and to how it pursues those aims than the views on meaning and language that Wittgenstein expounds in, e.g., Philosophical Investigations, with its insistence on particularity and diversity, and its rejection of explanation and formal modelling. But what about his earlier work, the Tractatus (henceforth )? At first sight, that seems much more congenial, as it develops a conception of language and meaning that is both general and uniform, explanatory.. (shrink)

Graham Harman writes that the “basic dualism in the world lies…between things in their intimate reality and things as confronted by other things.” However, dualism implies irreconcilable difference; what Harman points to is better expressed as a dyad, where the two components imply one another and interact. This article shows that systems theory has long asserted the fundamental character of Harman’s dyad, expressing it as the union of internal structure and external function, which correspond exactly to what Levi Bryant, characterizing (...) Harman’s views, refers to as the intra-ontic and the inter-ontic, respectively. After interpreting Harman’s dyad in terms of the ontology of systems theory, the article illustrates his dyad with a variety of examples, including conceptions about truth, ethics, value, and intelligence. The structure–function dyad is a spatial conception of a system as an object. It is usefully augmented with a temporal dimension, expressed in a third component or with an additional orthogonal dyad. Adding a temporal dyad to the structure–function dyad joins the idea of an event and/or process to the idea of an object. (shrink)

Wenn nunmehr die Union académique internationale auf Vorschlag der polnischen Akademie der Wissenschaften das große Werk (...) eines Aristoteles latinus, einer kritischen Edition der mittelalterlichen lateinischen Aristotelesübersetzungen, in Angriff genommen hat und unter der Leitung von G. Lacombe hierfür die Vorbereitungs- und Inventarisierarbeit im weitesten Umfang geleistet worden ist, so geht für die mittelalterliche geisteswissenschaftliche Forschung ein Wunsch in Erfüllung, den Clemens Baeumker und auch ich in unseren Arbeiten so lebhaft zum Ausdruck gebracht haben. Ich hatte, als ich im Jahre 1916, durch die Kriegsverhältnisse eingeengt, mein Buch »Forschungen über die lateinischen Aristotelesübersetzungen des 13. Jahrhunderts« schrieb, nicht daran gedacht, daß in so verhältnismäßig kurzer Zeit der Plan einer Ausgabe der mittelalterlichen lateinischen Aristotelesübertragungen, der auch eine Gesamtausgabe der Werke des Averroes in sich begreifen soll, gefaßt und in so energischer, zielbewußter Weise der Verwirklichung entgegengeführt würde.
