This 1995 volume views important social and political issues through the eyes of economists. Pioneered by Gary Becker, this approach asserts that all actions, whether working, playing, dating, or mating, have economic motivations and consequences, and can be analysed using economic reasoning. Intended as an introduction to the current state of the field, the essays are informal and non-technical, while still using up-to-date economic reasoning to illuminate such topics as crime, marriage, discrimination, immigration, fads and fashions. El concepto de capital social se encuentra ampliamente difundido en Latinoamérica –a escala local, nacional y supra-nacional- como fundamento y recomendación en la aplicación de políticas sociales destinadas a la disminución de la pobreza, entre las que se encuentran los programas y emprendimientos de vivienda social. La intención del presente artículo es señalar los límites que la disparidad de definiciones y el uso ambiguo de este término impone a su capacidad interpretativa y explicativa en relación con los complejos procesos sociales (...) en que se inscribe. Se intentará ejemplificar esta cuestión a partir de la interpretación y análisis de dos experiencias relevantes en la producción de hábitat popular que se encuentran en curso en la ciudad de Buenos Aires. De las mismas se desprenden que la capacidad de movilización y disponibilidad del recurso vinculado al capital social implica necesariamente una apuesta de luchas en donde lo político juega un rol relevante. Este trabajo tiene por objetivo analizar Hch 16 en tanto relato organizado por el autor en base a las tensiones de las ἐκκλησίαι de inicios del siglo II. Identificaremos en la narración cómo se representan las inquietudes por el liderazgo comunitario y la forja de una identidad grupal. En el primer caso, la interacción de Pablo con los οἶκοι filipenses propicia una reflexión acerca de la relación entre ministros y fieles. En el segundo, las diferentes designaciones que recibe Pablo en (...) el capítulo evidenciarían no solo la compleja identidad de los creyentes, sino la propuesta comunitaria del autor. (shrink)

Moritz Geiger was one of the most significant members of the early phase of the phenomenological movement. His work on the consciousness of feelings constitutes an example of careful phenomenological analysis. The central question Geiger raised is this: how are feelings given to consciousness when they are “fully lived”? As I seek to prove, the principal result of his analysis is to point out a way of being oriented towards feelings without objectifying them. Geiger’s analysis of the consciousness of feelings (...) is a masterpiece of phenomenological precision. It is reasonable to think that it influenced the way Husserl conceived of something so decisive as emotive intentionality. (shrink)

The states of affairs are one of the basic categories of the formal ontology in the husserlian sense of this word. They are the objectiv correlates of judgements and they have an existence independent of propositions and of acts of judging. Their form is "the being-b of A". States of affairs have different properties. One of the most important is that they are bearers of ontological modalities. In this respect the analysis of the different classes of modalities needs to be (...) completed for ontological investigations which make clear the several types of essences and the laws which are grounded in these essences. ABSTRACT In Fichte’s Addresses to the German Nation, one important issue is which of the concepts works as a foundation for the others. People, nation, language, state, or education are all possible candidates to take a central place. First, this paper analyzes the problems presented by the notions of “people” and “nation,” such as their ambiguous and even contradictory aspects. Second, we focus on how the concept of education needs a solid ground from which an educational plan can develop. Finally, (...) we show that the fundamental concept of Fichte’s Addresses is the same one as in his Natural Right: the State. The topos of jews’ blindness, recurrent in adversos iudaeos literature, embodies in the image of blindfold Synagoga in medieval visual arts. The first part of this paper focuses on its integration in different contexts of medieval Spanish art. Diferent, but not less interesting, is the way caecitatis iudeorum is illustrated in some illuminated manuscripts of Breviari d’Amor by Matfre Ermengaud and Fortalitium Fidei by Alonso de Espina, also subject of study throughout these pages.

Direct Informational Semantics, according to which [X]s represent X if ‘Xs cause [X]s’ is a law, and Fodorian naturalistic semantics both suffer from double disjunctivitis. I argue that robustness, properly construed, characterizes both represented properties and representing symbols: two or more properties normally regarded as non-disjunctive may each be nomologically connected to a non-disjunctive symbol, and two or more non-disjunctive symbols may each be nomologically connected to a property. This kind of robustness bifurcates the so-called disjunction problem into a Represented-Disjunction (...) Problem, of which Fodor was aware, and a Representer-Disjunction Problem, of which he was on the whole oblivious. Fodor fails to solve these problems: his solution to the former, the Asymmetric Dependence Condition, presupposes a successful solution to the latter, while possible responses that Fodor might make to the latter either beg the former or cannot be met or else flout the Naturalistic Requirement and the Atomistic Requirement. Even setting the Representer-Disjunction Problem aside, the Represented-Disjunction Problem does not get solved, because the robustness involving phonological/orthographic sequences guarantees that nothing can meet the Asymmetrical Dependence Condition. Indeed there is a serious problem of individuating phonological/orthographic tokens and types in a manner that satisfies Fodor’s expectations. This is made manifest by the presence of orthographic tokens embedded in larger tokens. (shrink)

This paper explores the body-schematic and body-imaginative processes that underlie individuals’ participation in the public sphere via religious media ecologies. Utilising embodied cognition and social critique, the authors outline how subaltern counterpublics make use of the body to enact micro-oppositions to mainstream discourses. The paper also discloses the origins of higher objectivities (identity, sense of togetherness, justice, plausibility, opposition and openness) in embodiment. Discussing counterpublics through the prism of embodied cognition, as found in Latin religious media ecologies, constitutes a valuable (...) alternative to the logocentric understanding of public consent. While the dominant discourse privileges abstract formal cognition, Latino subalterns use bodily, affective and enactive affordances given by religious media ecologies. The latter offer affordances and alternative strategies for enacting social imagination, bridging the personal and the public in physically choreographed joint intentions. Embodied participation suggests a constitutive process of public meaning that makes use of the body as the most fundamental medium of communication. (shrink)

Le latin mystique, texto que se plantea como la exploración de una literatura no estudiada por críticos y profesores, es una obra clave para comprender aspectos de la sensibilidad fin-de-siècle y las lecturas 'no académicas' que escritores (...) del siglo XX, tales como Ezra POUND o Jorge Luis BORGES, harán de la latinidad clásica y medieval. Among the various fin-de-siècle reinterpretations of the 'decadent' latin literature, Le latin mystique of Remy DE GOURMONT has a singular place, because is not only a critical essay but also an annotated and translated anthology. Le latin mystique, book that reviews a literature supposedly not studied by critics and scholars, is a key text for understanding aspects of the fin-de-siècle sensibility and the 'non-academic' readings that twentieth century writers, like Ezra POUND or Jorge Luis BORGES, will make of the classical and medieval latin literature. En el presente trabajo abordaremos la noción de “apócrifo” en un sentido amplio. Este sentido abarca tanto la noción original de “oculto”, existente ya en la literatura antigua, como la surgida posteriormente de “extracanónico”. Nuestra metodología de análisis se desprende de los estudios cognitivos y particularmente desde el historicismo cognitivo, ya que consideramos indispensable, ubicar estos textos dentro de las estructuras mentales de los autores que les dieron origen. De esta manera buscamos comprender las representaciones existentes en los individuos que (...) son compartidas públicamente con las representaciones de otros habitantes de la comunidad. Es decir, analizar estos textos tal cual funcionaban en las sociedades que los crearon. Así, esperamos demostrar que estos escritos “apócrifos” considerados tanto por rabinos como por eclesiásticos como “fuera del canon” y por lo tanto no determinantes para la historia y la teología, son en realidad indispensables para la comprensión del proceso de formación de dicho canon. Asimismo, estos textos conforman depósitos de sucesos, conceptos e ideas que alguna vez pertenecieron a determinados grupos tanto judíos como cristianos y que fueron luego dejados de lado en el intento de establecer un conjunto cerrado de textos que definiera cierta “autoridad” normativa para dichas comunidades. The humanist Giovanni Giovano Pontano wrote five dialogues, although only two of them were published during his lifetime. The last one, entitled Aegidius in honor of Giles of Viterbo, represents a conversation held in the context of the “Accademia Pontaniana” between a series of speakers who discuss the role of eloquence, the importance of combining sacred letters with profane ones, astrology, the immortality of the soul and the Aristotelian philosophical lexicon.
