    Kant and Anscombe: Two Contrasting Views on Aristotle’s ‘Virtue’.Manik Konch - 2022 - Philosophia 51 (2):793-810.
The paper attempts to discuss two contrasting views on Aristotle’s notion of ‘virtue’ advocated by Immanuel Kant and G. E. M. Anscombe. Kant maintains that good will is the primary condition of moral action. It is the foundation of moral laws. Virtue is given the secondary status while describing the nature of moral conduct. On the contrary, Anscombe is critical of this Kantian normative approach to the virtue. In her contention, the Kantian deontology excludes the psychological conditions while theorizing morality. Can virtue be unified? An Aristotelian justification on “unity of virtue”.Manik Konch - 2024 - South African Journal of Philosophy 43 (1):30-41.
This article explores two contrasting theories of virtue ethics, namely the unity theory of virtue and the disunity theory of virtue. The unity thesis asserts that virtues are unified in some sense, or that possession of one virtue is inextricably related to the possession of all others. Meanwhile, the disunity thesis argues that virtues are disunited, or that there is a lack of unity among the virtues. But still, there are many empirical observations that seem to contradict these two theses (...)

Aristotle on habit and moral character formation.Manik Konch & Ranjan Kumar Panda - 2018 - International Journal of Ethics Education 4 (1):31-41.
The habitual action is not only undertaken on a regular basis but also is personalized which has moral significance when we evaluate action and personality. For Aristotle, inculcating virtues through habitual action could develop a moral character. The naturalistic or behaviouristic perspective and the non-naturalistic perspective are two ways to interpret this Aristotelian theoretical position. The naturalistic thesis maintains that habit and character formation is inherently present in the form of disposition in human beings and could be causally related to (...)

Ontological Models, Preparation Contextuality and Nonlocality.Manik Banik, Some Sankar Bhattacharya, Sujit K. Choudhary, Amit Mukherjee & Arup Roy - 2014 - Foundations of Physics 44 (11):1230-1244.
The ontological model framework for an operational theory has generated much interest in recent years. The debate concerning reality of quantum states has been made more precise in this framework. With the introduction of generalized notion of contextuality in this framework, it has been shown that completely mixed state of a qubit is preparation contextual. Interestingly, this new idea of preparation contextuality has been used to demonstrate nonlocality of some \(\psi \) -epistemic models without any use of Bell’s inequality. In (...)

Women's Representation in Political Development in Indonesia: Examining Gender Discrimination and Patriarchal Culture.Evi Novida Ginting Manik & Fredick Broven Ekayanta - forthcoming - Evolutionary Studies in Imaginative Culture:228-241.
This research study explores women's representation in Indonesia's political development, highlighting the challenges and progress made. Despite an increase in the number of women in the DPR by the 2024 election to 22.1%, major challenges remain in achieving equitable representation. Qualitative research methods were used, involving interviews with female politicians, academics, and activists, as well as a documentation study of relevant policies. The findings show that the 30% quota policy for women in general elections faces various obstacles, including resistance from (...)

Reciprocal Ontological Models Show Indeterminism Comparable to Quantum Theory.Somshubhro Bandyopadhyay, Manik Banik, Some Sankar Bhattacharya, Sibasish Ghosh, Guruprasad Kar, Amit Mukherjee & Arup Roy - 2017 - Foundations of Physics 47 (2):265-273.
We show that within the class of ontological models due to Harrigan and Spekkens, those satisfying preparation-measurement reciprocity must allow indeterminism comparable to that in quantum theory. Our result implies that one can design quantum random number generator, for which it is impossible, even in principle, to construct a reciprocal deterministic model.

Strategies for Increasing Participation of Diverse Consumers in a Community Seafood Program.Talia Young, Gabriel Cumming, Ellie Kerns, Kristin Hunter-Thomson, Harmony Lu, Tamara Manik-Perlman, Cassandra Manotham, Tasha Palacio, Narry Veang, Wenxin Weng, Feini Yin & Cara Cuite - 2023 - Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics 36 (3):1-21.
Alternative food networks, such as farmers’ markets and community-supported agricultural and fishery programs, often struggle to reach beyond a consumer base that is predominantly white and affluent. This case study explores seven inclusion strategies deployed by a community-supported fishery program (Fishadelphia, in Philadelphia, PA, USA) including discounting prices, accepting payment in multiple forms and schedules, offering a range of product types, communicating and recruiting through a variety of media (especially in person), and choosing local institutions and people of color (POC) (...)

Engaging women and the poor: adaptive collaborative governance of community forests in Nepal. [REVIEW]Cynthia L. McDougall, Cees Leeuwis, Tara Bhattarai, Manik R. Maharjan & Janice Jiggins - 2013 - Agriculture and Human Values 30 (4):569-585.
Forests are a significant component of integrated agriculture-based livelihood systems, such as those found in many parts of Asia. Women and the poor are often relatively dependent on, and vulnerable to changes in, forests and forest access. And yet, these same actors are frequently marginalized within local forest governance. This article draws on multi-year, multi-case research in Nepal that sought to investigate and address this marginalization. Specifically, the article analyzes the influence of adaptive collaborative governance on the engagement of women (...)

Once More unto the Breach: Aesthetic Experience Revisited.Forest Hansen - 2015 - Philosophy of Music Education Review 23 (2):202.
Aesthetic experience as a determining factor in music appreciation has lost salience in recent years, especially in philosophy of music education. Markand Thakar, music director of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra and Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra and co-director of graduate conducting at Peabody Conservatory, has written a book subtitled An Investigation into Musical Beauty. In a series of dialogues between a talented music student and a wise professor, he equates beauty with the aesthetic experience and cites this as the hallmark (...)
