This book explores persistence, taking human beings as an example case. It investigates how concrete particulars stay the same during their temporal carriers while changing significantly. Themes of relativity, structural realism, 4-dimensional ontologies and different strains of panpsychism are amongst those addressed in this work. Beginning with an exploration of the puzzle of persistence, early chapters look at philosophers’ perspectives and models of persistence. Competitors in the debate are introduced, from classical 3-dimensionalism to two flavors of 4-dimensionalism, namely worm theory (...) and stage theory. The second part of the book explores the various challenges to 4-dimensionalism and develops a positive taxonomy of those questions that the reasonable proponent of 4-dimensionlism needs to answer. In the third part of the book readers may explore an ontology at the interface of analytic metaphysics and philosophy of mind, called Real Fourdimensionalism, or more specifically: Physicalistic Stage-Panexperientialism. This is a version of panexperiential stage theory and its alleged model of persistence-as-deciding answers the questions of the taxonomy. This book makes a substantial contribution to debates concerning the status, extent and viability of both stage theoretic models of persistence as well as non-reductive, naturalistic models of persistence. It will be of interest to graduates and scholars involved in analytic metaphysics, as well as the philosophy of mind, especially those specializing in questions of persistence and the ontology of the mind. A feminist perspective on selfhood – bound to a perspective on otherness – is the main concern of this article. The resonance of this notion of selfhood both with ethical philosophy and with the language of humanism enables a deeper understanding of a feminist ethics as well as its internal tensions. The article considers the relationship of feminism and humanism as one of “paradoxical fluidity” rather than antithetical polarization, to explore the ways in which feminism’s alliance with contemporary ethics exemplifies (...) its paradoxical relation to humanism. The study then underlines the vital contribution of feminist discourse to an ethical understanding of selfhood and intersubjectivity. Finally, it examines the work of experimental Canadian poet Lola Lemire Tostevin, who reveals the importance of an ethical, feminist version of selfhood that highlights the insufficiency as well as the potential of both humanist and postmodern versions of subjectivity. We report a novel task designed to elicit transient attention-lapse induced alienation of agency experiences in normal participants. When attention-related action slips occur during the task, participants reported substantially decreased self control as well as a high degree of perceived agency attributed to the errant hand. In addition, participants reported being surprised by, and annoyed with, the actions of the errant hand. We argue that ALIA experiences occur because of constraints imposed by the close and precise temporal relations between intention (...) formation and a contrary action employed in this paradigm. We note similarities between ALIA experiences and anarchic hand sign and argue that, despite important differences, both ALIA experiences and AHS phenomenology reflect failures of executive control to intervene and cancel contrary affordance-driven habitual motor plans. A brief self-report scale was developed to assess everyday performance failures arising directly or primarily from brief failures of sustained attention . The ARCES was found to be associated with a more direct measure of propensity to attention lapses and to errors on an existing behavioral measure of sustained attention . Although the ARCES and MAAS were highly correlated, structural modelling revealed the ARCES was more directly related to SART errors and the MAAS to SART RTs, which have been hypothesized (...) to directly reflect the lapses of attention that lead to SART errors. Thus, the MAAS and SART RTs appear to directly reflect attention lapses, whereas the ARCES and SART errors reflect the mistakes these lapses are thought to cause. Boredom proneness was also assessed by the BPS, as a separate consequence of a propensity to attention lapses. Although the ARCES was significantly associated with the BPS, this association was entirely accounted for by the MAAS, suggesting that performance errors and boredom are separate consequences of lapses in attention. A tendency to even extraordinarily brief attention lapses on the order of milliseconds may have far-reaching consequences not only for safe and efficient task performance but also for sustaining the motivation to persist in and enjoy these tasks. Mit Beginn der 1990er Jahre setzten in den USA und Westeuropa systematische Versuche ein, eine politikwissenschaftliche feministische Staatstheorie zu entwickeln. Der Einsatz dieser neuen Beschaftigung mit dem Staat zielt auf die Beantwortung der Frage, wie Geschlecht und Geschlechterverhaltnisse als konstitutive Elemente des modernen Staates begriffen werden konnen. Dies beinhaltet die Analyse vergeschlechtlichter staatlicher Institutionen, die Regulierung des Verhaltnisses von Mannern und Frauen durch staatliche Instrumente, aber auch die "Herstellung" von Geschlechtern bzw. Geschlechterverhaltnissen durch Staaten - also Formen der Subjekt- und (...) Identitatsbildung. Der vorliegende Band gibt einen Einblick in den aktuellen Stand feministischer Staatsdebatten, er macht aber auch exemplarisch sichtbar, welchen Beitrag feministische Konzepte zur Analyse staatlichen Wandels, der Veranderung geschlechtsspezifischer Staatlichkeit sowie fur eine staatstheoretische Begrundung von Emanzipation und Geschlechterdemokratie leisten konnen. The concept of “site” is at the center of current debates in theories of social practices as well as in cultural anthropology. It is unclear, however, how to assess the associated methodological assumption that overriding social structures or cultural formations can manifest themselves in sites. The article draws on the conception of social practices and introduces the notion of “publicness” in order to explicate how and why sociality and social structures can be accessed through “siting”. Sites as well as social (...) practices, it is claimed, have to be conceptualized as essentially public and thus principally observable phenomena. This assumption of publicness implicit to both site ontology and theories of social practices is unfolded on the basis of a praxeological reformulation of the paradigm of joint attention elaborated in developmental psychology. To avoid presentist misinterpretations, we then conceptualize sociality as chains of practices across time and space, drawing on the works of Theodore Schatzki, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Anthony Giddens and Bruno Latour. The public carriers of practices (artifacts, symbols, media, bodies) and the translocal structures they establish acquire particular significance in these approaches. In a further step, we present some methodological consequences of the “publicness assumption” and support our arguments by referring to Pierre Bourdieu's study on Distinction. (shrink)

Is synaesthesia cognitively useful? Individuals with time–space synaesthesia experience time units as idiosyncratic spatial forms, and report that these forms aid them in mentally organising their time. In the present study, we hypothesised that time–space synaesthesia would facilitate performance on a time-related cognitive task. Synaesthetes were not specifically recruited for participation; instead, likelihood of time–space synaesthesia was assessed on a continuous scale based on participants’ responses during a semi-structured interview. Participants performed a month-manipulation task, which involved naming every second month (...) or every third month in reverse-chronological order, beginning and ending with a target month. Using hierarchical multiple regression, we found that time–space synaesthesia corresponded with faster performance on both versions of the task. We propose that time–space synaesthesia may expedite the cognitive manipulation of time-based information. Our results also indicate that synaesthesia is far less unusual than widely believed. Excerpt from Philosophische Stromungen der Gegenwart Der Kampf um einen neuen Lebensinhalt ist wieder einmal entbrannt. Es gahrt in den Kopfen. Man verlangt, wie zu allen Zeiten, da das Leben aufwarts ging, von der Philosophie Antworten auf jene Ratselfragen, deren Losung einst der Theologie uberantwortet wurde, wahrend man sie zuletzt der Naturwissenschaft anheimgestellt hat. Da weder die Deutungen der Theologen, noch die Erklarungen der Naturforscher endgultig zu befriedigen vermogen, so klopft man aufs neue bei den Philosophen an. Mit dem 20. (...) Jahrhundert hat eine philosophische Bewegung eingesetzt, die zu einer Neublute der einst verfemten "Naturphilosophie" gefuhrt hat. Die "philosophischen Stromungen der Gegenwart" gilt es hier festzuhalten. In der atemlosen Hast und verwirrenden Unrast der philosophischen Gedankenbildungen unserer Tage laufen wir Gefahr, aneinander vorbei zu philosophieren. Es durfte daher geboten sein, von Zeit zu Zeit Atem zu holen und Umschau zu halten. Selbstbesinnung und Selbstbescheidung fordern gleichsehr geschichtlichen Umblick und systematischen Ausblick. Die hier gebotene Schilderung der "philosophischen Stromungen der Gegenwart" mochte nun den Versuch machen, aus der erdruckenden Fulle der uns zugemuteten neuen philosophischen Welterklarungen diejenigen herauszugreifen, denen entweder typischer Charakter oder machtvolle Wirkung auf das philosophische Denken der Gegenwart zuerkannt werden muss. Weder sind hier alle Richtungen und Schulen, noch alle Nationen und Literaturen gleichmassig berucksichtigt.
