Als Fritz Linder, Schtiler und Nachfolger von K. H. Bauer auf dem Heidelberger Lehrstuhl rur Chirurgie, am 12. Juli 1978 am Grabe seines Lehrers im Namen aller Freunde und Schuler sprach, erfuh­ ren wir, daB der Entschlafene "auf dem todlichen Krankenlager" noch seinen Briefwechsel mit Karl Jaspers las und ordnete. Diese letztwillige Vergegenwartigung einer freundschaftlichen Ver­ bindung aus den Jahren nach 1945 schien uns groBe menschliche Bedeutung zu haben, und wir waren erfreut, spater von Frau Bauer und Heinz Gotze, (...) Mitinhaber des Springer-Verlages, den Auftrag zur Herausgabe der Briefe zu erhalten, zumal sich mit beiden Kor­ respondenzpartnern eigene, dankbare Erinnerungen seit 1940 ver­ banden. Der Briefwechsel begann unmittelbar nach der ersten Begegnung yom 5.4. 1945 im Hause von Jaspers, als der Krieg rur Heidelberg vorbei war und politisch unbelastete Professoren vor der Aufgabe standen, die inzwischen geschlossene Universitat im Einvernehmen mit der Besatzungsbehorde wieder zu eroffnen und die Vorausset­ zungen rur die Wiederaufnahme freier Forschung und Lehre zu schaff en. Fur diesen Neubeginn, der natiirlich ein Neubeginn im Geiste des unveranderlich Gultigen sein sollte, war die daran anknupfende Freundschaft zwischen Bauer und Jaspers entscheidend. Die Person­ lichkeiten erganzten sich, und was beide damals suchten, war jeweils beim Partner zu finden: bei Jaspers die lebendige Idee in ihrem kla­ ren, wenn auch geschichtlich wandelbaren Wahrsein, bei Bauer die anpassungsfahige Vitalitat und die Gabe, Denken und Handeln zu verbinden. The geometric shapes and natural forms, captured with exceptional precision in Ernst Haeckel's prints, still influence artists and designers to this day. This volume highlights the research and findings of this natural scientist. Powerful modern microscopes have confirmed the accuracy of Haeckel's prints, which even in their day, became world famous. Haeckel's portfolio, first published between 1899 and 1904 in separate installments, is described in the opening essays. The plates illustrate Haeckel's fundamental monistic notion of the "unity of all living (...) things" and the wide variety of forms are executed with utmost delicacy. Incipient microscopic organisms are juxtaposed with highly developed plants and animals. The pages, ordered according to geometric and "constructive" aspects, document the oness of the world in its most diversified forms. This collection of plates was not only well-received by scientists, but by artists and architects as well. Rene Binet, a pioneer of glass and iron constructions, Emile Galle, a renowned Art Nouveau designer, and the photographer Karl Blossfeld all make explicit reference to Haeckel in their work. Edited in this contribution are eighteen of August Tholuck's letters to Friedrich Lücke from 1827 to 1854, which were recently discovered in Göttingen's municipal archives. In addition, ten of Lücke's replies that were made available by the Franckesche Stiftungen in Halle now receive their necessary supplementation. In its introduction and critical commentary the paper focuses on and elucidates the exegesis of St John's Gospel, theological Hegelianism and Lücke's appointment from Göttingen to Halle in 1838.

The aim of this book is to provide a comparative study of the concepts of freedom in existential philosophy and liberalism. To this end, it presents a detailed examination of the works of two of the most prominent thinkers of the respective notions of freedom in the 20th century, Karl Jaspers and Friedrich August von Hayek. Their ideas of freedom are developed both independently and in relation to each other, from their foundational principles. In the political conclusion, the (...) possibility of a conception of freedom that integrates both approaches is explored. Although Jaspers himself made an explicit reference to Hayek in one of his books, such a comparative study has not yet been undertaken in the literature. In many respects—both historically and systematically—this work breaks new ground, opening up new philosophical discourses and interpretations of both authors' works in research and teaching. IN 1787, six years after the publication of the Critique of Pure Reason, one year before the publication of the Critique of Practical Reason, and three years prior to the appearance of the Critique of Judgment, Duke Karl August of Sax-Weimar was persuaded to establish at the University of Jena the world's first university chair designated for the promulgation and explication of the new Critical Philosophy associated with Immanuel Kant. The first occupant of this chair was Karl (...) Leonhard Reinhold, an Austrian ex-monk, whose main qualification for the new position was his fame as the author of a series of well-received magazine articles promoting the new philosophy. At Jena, however, Reinhold's own "Kantianism" underwent an interesting metamorphosis; in the books and lectures that he wrote during his seven year tenure there he profoundly revised the Kantian system and produced a new version of it which he called "Elementary Philosophy." It is altogether appropriate that when Reinhold finally left Jena his successor should have been an even more innovative follower of Kant and admirer of Reinhold's Elementary Philosophy, J. G. Fichte. Fichte arrived in 1794 and immediately began constructing and laying before the public what is perhaps the most imaginative and remarkable of all the great post-Kantian speculative systems: his Wissenschaftslehre, or "Theory of Scientific Knowledge." Concurrent with the widespread revival of interest in German Idealism generally, interest in Fichte's Wissenschaftslehre has increased remarkably in recent years. Often viewed as the first step "from Kant to Hegel," Fichte's system was in fact not the first attempt to convert Kant's philosophy into a more consistent and thoroughgoingly speculative system. The honor--or onus--of making the "first step" in this direction belongs to Reinhold, and the aim of this essay is to indicate why this is so by surveying the Elementary Philosophy and examining those of its features which most influenced other philosophers, most notably Fichte. Though it may be claiming too much to say that one cannot properly understand Fichte's early presentations of his system without some acquaintance with Reinhold's Elementary Philosophy, it is certainly true that a familiarity with the latter is a tremendous aid to anyone trying to penetrate the former. Though the chief purpose of this survey is to emphasize Reinhold's contributions to the development of German Idealism, an ulterior aim is to introduce contemporary readers, especially English-language readers, to Reinhold's Elementary Philosophy and to suggest reasons why this neglected and all but forgotten system might still merit serious study. Seelenreisen und Hadesfahrten gehören zu den berühmtesten Themen der antiken Literatur, sind bislang jedoch nicht hinreichend unter philosophischen Fragestellungen untersucht worden. Daher vereinigt dieser Band interdisziplinäre Beiträge internationaler WissenschaftlerInnen zum Thema Seelenreise, Hadesfahrt und Katabasis in der Antike mit Blick auf philosophische Texte und Fragestellungen. Das heuristische Paradigma von Seelenreise und Katabasis ermöglicht in beispielhafter Weise, Charakteristika und Spezifika von Seelenkonzeptionen historischer Gesellschaften hinsichtlich ihrer religiösen, politischen und philosophischen Kontextualisierungen und Funktionalisierungen zu untersuchen. In Anknüpfung an die vorliegende Forschungsliteratur zum (...) Themenfeld Jenseitserfahrung, Seelenwanderung, Katabasis und Ekstasis wollen die Beiträge dieses Bandes nun den Horizont mit Blick auf Seelenreisen und verschiedene philosophische Fragestellungen erweitern. Die auf sorgfältigen Textanalysen basierenden vielen neuen Beobachtungen, die mit diesem Band vorgelegt werden, werden sicherlich den aktuellen Forschungsdiskurs mitprägen. (shrink)
