Immanuel Kant's work changed the course of modern philosophy; Karl Ameriks examines how. He compares the philosophical system set out in Kant's Critiques with the work of the major philosophers before and after Kant. Individual essays provide case studies in support of Ameriks's thesis that late 18th-century reactions to Kant initiated an "historical turn," after which historical and systematic considerations became joined in a way that fundamentally distinguishes philosophy from science and art.

Farmers of the Peruvian Andesmake use of seed-size variation as a source offlexibility in the production of ``nativecommercial'' farmer varieties of Andeanpotatoes and ulluco. In a case study of easternCuzco, the use of varied sizes of seed tubers isfound to underpin versatile farm strategiessuited to partial commercialization (combinedwith on-farm consumption and the next season'sseed). Use of seed-size variation also providesadaptation to diverse soil-moistureenvironments. The importance and widespread useof seed-size variation among farmers isdemonstrated in the emphasis and consistency oflinguistic expressions about (...) this trait. Smalland small-medium seed is typically sown in thecommunity's ``Hill'' unit of sub-humid,upper-elevation agriculture. Seed tubers ofmedium-size and larger are needed fordrought-stressed locales in lower-elevationlandscape units. Farm-level preferences for theseed-size of tubers also suggest potentialrelations to resource endowments of farmhouseholds and gender-related management,although these tendencies were notstatistically significant in the study. Anintra-varietal, landscape-environmentalperspective on seed-size management, whichincludes an emphasis on within-fieldversatility, helps to strengthen the researchsupport of local seed production in policiesand programs aiming for in situagrobiodiversity conservation, marketingcapacity, and food security. Im Verlauf vieler Diskussionen über die sowjetische Philosophie am Osteuropa Institut der Universität von Fribourg wurden immer wieder zwei Probleme berührt. Erstens die Schwierigkeiten, denen der sowjetische Diamat bei der Beantwortung der sogenannten 'Grundfrage der Philo sophie' begegnet. Zweitens das Pro blem der Abhängigkeit der sowjetischen Philosophie von vorausgehenden Philosophien in der Geschichte: man kann in der heutigen sowjetischen Philosophie vor allem hegelianische und aristotelische Tendenzen unterscheiden. Diese Diskussionen wurden zur direkten Anregung für die vorliegende Arbeit. Zunächst wollte ich vor (...) allem die aristotelischen Tendenzen in der sowjetischen Philosophie untersuchen. Beim Studium der sowjetischen Literatur über die 'Grundfrage' wurde es aber immer klarer, daß gerade die neuere sowjetische Philosophie auf diesem Gebiet unter einem so starken Einfluß Hegels steht, daß die aristotelischen Tendenzen ver schwindend klein sind. Daher wurde die Arbeit zur Untersuchung dieses sehr grundlegenden Teils der sowjetischen Philosophie unter dem Ge sichtspunkt der Abhängigkeit von und Ähnlichkeit mit Hege!. Für die in vielen Diskussionen erhaltenen Anregungen möchte ich den Mitgliedern des Instituts danken. Mein ganz besonderer Dank gilt Professor J. M. Bochenski, unter dessen Leitung diese Arbeit entstanden ist. Nicht nur was das Verständnis der sowjetischen Philosophie, sondern auch besonders was die Interpretation Hegels betrifft, verdanke ich ihm viel mehr, als durch direkte Bezugnahmen im Text ausgedrückt werden konnte. Die moderne High-Tech-Medizin bietet dem arztlichen Handeln Moglichkeiten zur Lebensrettung, wie Heilung und Linderung von schweren Erkrankungen, die es in der Medizingeschichte vorher nicht gab. Diese positive Seite der heutigen westlichen Medizin, auf der Grundlage der Naturwissenschaften beruhend, fuhrt das arztliche Handeln andererseits in Grenzgebiete menschlichen Daseins, in denen die angewandte Technik zur Frage nach der Sinnhaftigkeit dieser technischen Anwendungsmoglichkeiten fuhrt. Medizintechnisches Konnen reichen aus der Sicht und Erfahrung der (...) taglichen Praxis oft nicht aus in der gemeinsamen partnerschaftlichen Beziehung Arzt-Patient eine schwerwiegende Erkrankung zu bewaltigen. Technisch sachliches Konnen des Arztes sollte gepaart sein mit menschlich charakterlichen und geistigen Grundhaltungen, die den Patienten als Menschen/Subjekt wahrnehmen. Die antike Lehre der Tugenden und ihre Weiterentfaltung im christlichen Glauben kann einen solchen Beitrag zu den Grundhaltungen des Arztes leisten. In recent years the normativity of thought and meaning has been the subject of an extensive debate. What is at issue is whether intentionality has normative features, and if so, whether that constitutes a problem for naturalistic attempts to account for intentional phenomena. The origin of the debate is Saul Kripke’s interpretation of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s later philosophy, published in Wittgenstein on Rules and Private Language. Kripke claimed, on behalf of Wittgenstein, that dispositional accounts of linguistic meaning - accounts, i.e., which (...) attempt to reduce semantic phenomena to facts about how speakers are disposed to employ words - fail to ground the factuality of semantic statements. From this, and other arguments, the far reaching conclusion was drawn by Kripke’s Wittgenstein that there are no semantic facts, that every application of a word is “a leap in the dark”. This position has become known as meaning scepticism. In the present essay, it will be argued that meaning scepticism is incoherent, but that the normativity argument is interesting in its own right. The development of the debate will be traced, primarily through detailed consideration of the writings of Paul Boghossian, who has shifted the focus from the normativity of linguistic meaning to that of belief. It will be contended that even though Boghossian’s attempt to locate a normativity of belief fails, there is a related form of normativity that has to do with the intrinsic badness of false beliefs. Also, suggestions made by Kripke regarding the normativity of intentions will be investigated, and related to contemporary arguments in the philosophy of rationality. The tentative conclusion is that there are some interesting kinds of normativity associated with the intentional, but of a somewhat different variety than those usually discussed. (shrink)
