Der Band versammelt Beiträge, die auf dem 1. Internationalen Kongreß der Schleiermacher-Gesellschaft gehalten wurden. Sie widmen sich zum 200jährigen Jubiläum ihres Erscheinens den Reden über die Religion, Friedrich Schleiermachers frühem religionsphilosophischem Hauptwerk. Schleiermachers Reden über die Religion stehen im Spannungsfeld von Spätaufklärung und Idealismus, Theologie und Frühromantik. Die Beiträge befassen sich sowohl mit problemgeschichtlichen Fragen als auch mit theoretischen Perspektiven. Geistphilosophie, Ethik und Kulturtheorie bilden den systematischen Rahmen des Religionsbegriffs. Die thematische Vielfalt der Motive, die in den Reden anklingen, erschließt (...) sich daher nur der interdisziplinären Forschung - eine Einsicht, deren fruchtbare Ergebnisse der Kongreßband vorführt. Seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts hat die historisch-materialistische Gesellschaftstheorie wichtige Beitrage zur Rolle des Staates geleistet. Insbesondere seit den 1970er Jahren fragte eine Stromung, die sich zum "westlichen Marxismus" zahlte: Warum nimmt politische Herrschaft in burgerlich-kapitalistischen Gesellschaften die spezifische Form des Staates an? Wie transformiert sich der Staat historisch in enger Verbindung mit gesellschaftlichen Veranderungen? Joachim Hirsch ist ein herausragender Vertreter dieses theoretischen Ansatzes, der die Frage nach der Staatsform ins Zentrum gestellt hat. Er hat Begriffe wie "Sicherheitsstaat", "nationaler (...) Wettbewerbsstaat" und "Internationalisierung des Staates" gepragt und die materialistische Staatstheorie mit der Hegemonietheorie Antonio Gramscis und der Regulationstheorie produktiv verknupft. Wichtige politische Kritiken und Perspektiven verdichten sich in Hirschs Konzepten wie "radikaler Reformismus" und "soziale Infrastruktur". (shrink)

"Heimat" ist zutiefst doppeldeutig. Heimat steht zum einen für Sicherheit und Geborgenheit, zum anderen für Enge und Exklusion. Heimat ist zugleich Paradies und Sehnsuchtsort wie auch Hölle. Das Buch lotet diese Spannung aus. Im Fokus steht nicht nur der gegenwärtige politische Gebrauch des Begriffs. Gefragt wird auch, ob es angesichts der Individualität, Pluralität und Heterogenität, die das Lebensgefühl der Menschen prägen, überhaupt noch Sinn macht, den Begriff "Heimat" zu verwenden. Gleichzeitig fordern Migration und Flucht die modernen westlichen Gesellschaften heraus, sich (...) neu mit kulturellen Verortungen auseinanderzusetzen. In this paper, the relations between science and technology, intervention and representation, the natural and the artificial are analysed on the background of the formation of modern science in the sixteenth century. Due to the fact that technique has been essential for modern science from its early beginning, modern science is characterised by a hybridisation of knowledge and intervention. The manipulation of nature in order to measure its properties has steadily increased until artificial things have been produced, such as laser (...) beams, chemical compounds, elementary particles. Furthermore, the structural bracing of natural science, technological development, and industrial exploitation of nature go also back to the foundation of modern science. In order to strengthen the debate on technoscience against this background, the specific characteristics of technoscientific objects have to be clarified as have the specific characteristics of the social organisation of technoscience and its performance. Because of the intellectual attraction of the neo-Darwinian theory of evolution, its conccpts are often borrowed to conceptualized evolutionary change also in non-biological domains. However, a heuristic strategy like that is problematic. An attempt is therefore made to identify generic features of evolution which transcend domain-specific characteristics. Epistemological, conccptual, and methodological implications are discussed, and the ontological question is raised how non-biological evolutionary theories can be accommodated within the Darwinian world view of modern sciences.

Form follows function, but it does not follow from function. Form is not derivable from the latter. To realize a desired technical function, a form must first be found that is able to realize it at all. Secondly, the question arises as to whether an envisaged form realizes the function in an appropriate way. Functions are multiply realizable—various different forms can bear the very same function. One needs to find a form of a technical artifact that realizes an envisaged function (...) sufficiently efficient, robust, or whatever criteria might be imposed. This paper scrutinizes biomimetics as one way to find a good solution to the realization problem. Drawing on an approach from the philosophy of simulations, it reconstructs the biomimetic relation as being mediated by a theoretical model. It is shown that the robustness of the functioning system is usually reached in different ways in biological and in technological systems, which explains differences in morphogenetic mechanisms or principles found in these fields. This reconstruction helps to understand problems with robustness in synthetic biology that occur when technical design principles are implemented in a biological system. The mimetic relation between the biological and the technical realm is found to be asymmetric. (shrink)

'Religion' und 'Aufklärung' markieren zwei spannungsvolle Stichworte in den kontroversen Debatten um das Projekt der Moderne. Sie betreffen die Religion und ihr Verhältnis zur humanen Vernunft überhaupt. Die gegenwärtigen, zum Teil höchst kontrovers geführten Auseinandersetzungen um Religion, deren vermeintliche Wiederkehr, ihren Gestaltwandel sowie ihre Rolle in der modernen Gesellschaft gewinnen freilich erst dann an Tiefenschärfe, wenn man sie in ihre mit der europäischen Aufklärung beginnende moderne Problemgeschichte einträgt. Es zeichnet das Werk Friedrich Schleiermachers, Ernst Troeltschs sowie Paul Tillichs aus, diesen (...) modernen Problemhorizont umfassend in ihre religionsphilosophischen und theologischen Auslegungen aufgenommen zu haben. Der Band beleuchtet nicht nur die Konzeptionen dieser drei Autoren, sondern lotet zugleich die gegenwärtigen Problemanforderungen einer aufgeklärten Religion sowie die Grenzen der religiösen Aufklärung durch die Einbeziehung der historischen Perspektive aus. The birth of a new discipline, called 'physical chemistry', is sometimes related to the names OSTWALD, ARRHENIUS and VAN'T HOFF and dated back to the year 1887, when OSTWALD founded the Zeitschrift für physikalische Chemie.[1] But as many historians have pointed out, the phrase 'physical chemistry' was widely used before that and the topics under investigation partially go back to Robert BOYLE's attempts to connect chemistry with concepts of mechanical philosophy.[2] The idea of a sudden birth of physical chemistry in (...) 1887 seems to be a founder myth.[3] But there is no doubt that in the late nineteenth-century there was a rapid growth of research in fields now understood as physical chemistry: chemical thermodynamics, electrochemistry, photochemistry, spectroscopy, chemical kinetics etc. (shrink)
