Cancers often express hundreds of genes otherwise specific to germ cells, the germline/cancer (GC) genes. Here, we present and discuss the hypothesis that activation of a “germline program” promotes cancer cell malignancy. We do so by proposing four hallmark processes of the germline: meiosis, epigenetic plasticity, migration, and metabolic plasticity. Together, these hallmarks enable replicative immortality of germ cells as well as cancer cells. Especially meiotic genes are frequently expressed in cancer, implying that genes unique to meiosis may play a (...) role in oncogenesis. Because GC genes are not expressed in healthy somatic tissues, they form an appealing source of specific treatment targets with limited side effects besides infertility. Although it is still unclear why germ cell specific genes are so abundantly expressed in cancer, from our hypothesis it follows that the germline's reproductive program is intrinsic to cancer development. Land registration systems are used throughout the world in order to store information on the ownership of land, rights attached to it, and burdens affecting it. A smoothly functioning land registration system guarantees the security of land transfer operations. However, there are significant differences in the way national land registration systems are run due to their historical development and divergent legislative approaches to land registration. Consequently, the need arises to compare different systems so as to find both common ground and (...) discrepancies between them. The paper contains such a comparative analysis which has been carried out with translation in mind: to discover the best ways of transferring land registration legal concepts expressed in one linguistic framework and characteristic of a given legal culture into target legal spaces using other linguistic frameworks. The comparison in question has taken place in a third space, a space where selected aspects of selected legal systems mingle revealing more or less clear similarities and more or less distinct differences between them. The juxtaposition of source and target legal cultures in a third space has resulted in finding translation equivalents that do not abuse the original ideas or—if this has been unavoidable—abuse them to the smallest extent possible. The analysis has covered the Polish land registration system and equivalent systems in English- and German-speaking countries and has been conducted from the point of view of a Polish-English and Polish-German translator. After 1945, Czech philosophy and culture were first introduced to existentialism. First it was the original works of French existentialists (Sartre, Camus, Marcel), later by means of the journal Letters (1947) and Václav Černý (The first book on existentialism, 1948). The acceptance of existentialism in Czech context was not univocal. Besides factual analyses (J. Patočka, V. Navrátil, V. T. Miškovská), existentialism met with criticism and rejection mainly from Marxists and Catholic scholars for its rational weakness, pessimism, helplessness and intellectual decline.

Česká filosofka Albína Dratvová (1892–1969) je připomínána především pro své práce z filosofie přírodních věd a jako autorka řady učebnic filosofie a logiky pro střední školy. Významnou část jejího myšlenkového odkazu tvoří také publikace antropologicko-etické. Mezi nimi má důležité místo knížka Duše dnešní ženy. Autorka v ní vychází z vlastní zkušenosti a vlastních zážitků a věnuje se významu a úkolům duševní činnosti žen v nových podmínkách a formách ženské aktivity. This study explored the relationship between both overall television viewing and romantic youth drama viewing, as well as of females’ concerns about boys’ attractiveness expectations on the one hand, and body image dissatisfaction on the other. Participants were 411 adolescent girls who completed self-report measures on body dissatisfaction, television viewing, and concerns about appearance expectations. Our results indicated that there was both a direct and indirect relationship between romantic youth drama viewing and body satisfaction. Girls who spent more time watching (...) romantic youth drama displayed lower levels of body satisfaction. In addition, romantic youth drama viewing had a significant positive impact on concerns about boys’ attractiveness expectations, which had an indirect effect on body satisfaction. (shrink)

The main thesis of this monograph, and its novelty, is the attempt to read Newman's work not only as a defence of the author's life, but as a defence of individual life in general. This reading is done against the background of his profound personalism based on two foundations: truth and responsibility.

Tato práce se zabývá možnými přístupy k etice sexuality, jejich klady i zápory. Etikou sexuality zde není míněno moralizování, stejně tak sexualitou není míněn pouze koitus, pohlavní chování je zde míněno v širším významu tedy včetně rozlehlé oblasti lidského svádění, okolků či otálení. Popsány jsou čtyři klasické přístupy k etice sexuality: tradicionalistický, romantický, marxisticko-feministický a liberální, avšak uvážen je i přístup antinatalistický, který vyplývá z asymetrického argumentu Davida Benatara uveřejněného v jeho práci Nebýt či být. Benatarův antinatalizmus totiž vytváří etiku (...) pohlavního chování, v níž pouze sex, který nevede k rozmnožení, může být morální. I když je tento pátý, antinatalistický přístup značně kontroverzní a zdaleka ne intuitivní, extrémnost jeho pozic se příliš neliší od tradicionalistického pohledu, v němž je morální pouze sex k rozmnožení vedoucí, tyto dva přístupy tak lze postavit do přímé opozice jako dvě krajní možnosti uvažování o etice pohlavního chování. Roli střední cesty v takovém řazení potom zaujme liberální přístup, který jako jediný etiku sexuality nevidí jako etiku odlišnou od jiných lidských činností. (shrink)
